Christian Science Practitioner

Reports to: Camp Director and Director of Operations

Job Description

To pray for the camp as a whole, as well as to respond to requests by individuals for specific prayer for healing.  To be available to provide reassurance of God's ever-present care, support individual and cabin engagement with the weekly Bible Lesson and the summer metaphysical theme, and to answer questions about the practice of Christian Science.

CedarS Camps hires Christian Science Practitioners to serve in Main Camp, Junior Leadership, Compound Idea Program, and Ski Camp.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Pray daily for the welfare of the camp as a whole.
  2. Lead Bible Lesson study at the cabin level daily.
  3. Give a 5-10 minute talk after breakfast to set a God-focused tone for the day based on the metaphysical theme for the summer or the weekly Bible Lesson, specifically addressing the camp's goals and outcomes.
  4. Provide prayer-based health care to individual campers and staff.
    • Give Christian Science treatment to campers and staff who request it.
    • Collaborate with Christian Science nurses to meet physical and emotional needs.
    • Follow policies and procedures as described in the Care House Manual.
  5. Visit with individuals to help them grow in their understanding of Christian Science, and reason through questions with those seeking answers or feeling troubled.
  6. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources to promote spiritual growth of the campers and staff.
    • Set up Care House facility.
    • Inventory and keep up-to-date all necessary research and reading materials.
  7. Maintain accurate care records according to state and American Camp Association standards.
    • Prepare and utilize daily logs for visits and Christian Science treatment.
  8. Inform staff each session of the practitioner's availability and desire to support campers and staff.
  9. Maintain the ethics of Christian Science practice, including obeying the laws of the land.

Other Job Duties

Attend Directors' meetings.

  • Communicate regularly with the Camp Director and campers' parents concerning the status of their child's health by telephone in the situation of an overnight stay at Care House, chronic problem lasting more than two days, or any emergency/accident related treatment.
  • Support church services and Wednesday testimony meetings by helping the Readers prepare, especially in the case of first-time Readers.
  • Support Sunday School instruction by holding workshops for staff on Sunday School teaching, especially in the case of first-time Sunday School teachers.

Relationships

The Christian Science Practitioner has a close relationship with the Christian Science Nurses and the Camp Director.  Further, the Christian Science Practitioner will have a professional relationship with many individuals at camp.  The expectation is that these relationships will be harmonious, and that communication will be respectful and appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Main Camp Practitioner: Must be currently listed in the Christian Science Journal
  • All Christian Science Practitioners: Must have completed Christian Science Class Instruction
  • 21+ years of age
  • Mother Church membership

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Love of God and Christian Science
  • Ability to relate to and support youth
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health needs
  • Ability to remain free of human opinion and politics, with pure allegiance to Christ

Physical Aspects of the Job

  • Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain
  • Possess endurance to meet emergency needs
