CedarS Camps Fall 2024 Bible study features great poetic texts from the major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel), Psalms, and wisdom literature (Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes) of the Hebrew Bible. Grow in your understanding of the healing messages of justice, awe, and steadfast love in the Hebrew Bible’s prophets, literary masterpiece (Job), and hymnal (Psalms) in their literary and historical contexts. Explore the major prophets’ groundbreaking insights about God during crises, including Second Isaiah’s declarations of monotheism and God’s mothering love, Ezekiel’s emphasis on God’s awesome holiness, and Jeremiah’s message of a new covenant. Wrestle with vital questions and theological breakthroughs in the book of Job. Probe the spiritual significance of the genres, editing, and imagery of Psalms. Revel in the wisdom of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Gain a deeper appreciation of Mary Baker Eddy’s use and interpretation of key texts from the Hebrew Bible in light of writings about these same biblical texts by women, Bible scholars, and ministers in nineteenth-century New England, including her childhood pastors. Learn about and use resources and approaches for deeper Bible study. Discuss the Hebrew Bible's awe-inspiring relevance to our lives and world.
Facilitator Bio
Dr. Barry R. Huff is Professor of Religious Studies at Principia College, where he has taught since 2008 and twice been selected by the student body as Principia College’s Teacher of the Year. Many of the college courses that he has taught relate to the topics of this Bible study, including Wisdom Literature and Psalms, Hebrew Prophets, Old Testament, Biblical Interpretation, The Life of Mary Baker Eddy, and Christian Science Movement: Biblical Interpretation. Biblical studies was the emphasis of Barry’s master’s degrees from Eden Theological Seminary and Columbia Theological Seminary and of his Ph.D. from Union Presbyterian Seminary. He wrote his master’s thesis and Ph.D. dissertation on the book of Job and has published essays on Job in Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology and Seeking Wisdom’s Depths and Torah’s Heights: Essays in Honor of Samuel E. Balentine, edited by Barry R. Huff and Patricia Vesely (Smyth & Helwys, 2020).
Barry has conducted archival research on Mary Baker Eddy and nineteenth-century biblical interpretation through fellowships with The Mary Baker Eddy Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and New England Regional Fellowship Consortium. He serves as a researcher at The Mary Baker Eddy Library, and his essay, “Mary Baker Eddy: Liberating Interpreter of the Pauline Corpus,” appears in Strangely Familiar: Protofeminist Interpretations of Patriarchal Biblical Texts, edited by Nancy Calvert-Koyzis and Heather Weir (Society of Biblical Literature, 2009). Since giving his first Bible talk at CedarS Family Camp in 2000, Barry has given hundreds of Bible talks and workshops from coast to coast, lectured in Greece, Israel, and Jordan on Principia Lifelong Learning Trips, and presented papers to six different sections at Annual Meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature. He looks forward to returning home to CedarS Camps for its Fall 2024 Bible Study.

If you are not able to join us in person, virtual participation is possible through CedarS.
- Participate in real time during all Bible study sessions (Friday evening, September 27 through Monday evening, September 30). You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your insights live.

- Optional camp activites: nature walks, pickleball, Bible Lands Park tours, horseback riding...
- Optional speciality activity: Work with Matthew and Davya in a small group setting to compose your own original psalm.
- Optional October 1 day trip to Branson, Missouri's renowned Sight and Sound Theater to watch the production of Queen Esther. There will be an additional charge of $67/ticket.

CHECK-IN:
The check-in table will be open from 3:00-6:00pm on Friday, September 27th. Staff will show guests to their room to get settled before dinner is served at 6:00pm.
CHECK-OUT:
There is no class on the morning of Tuesday, October 1st, and regular departure is between 9:00-10:00am. Check-out for Extended Stay guests is between 9:00-10:00am on October 2nd or 3rd.

Shuttle service is available to and from the Springfield, MO (SGF) and St. Louis (STL) airports. Here are some key travel details:
Flying into St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL):
- Incoming flights: The STL shuttle will depart for CedarS from the St. Louis Airport at 2:00 p.m on Friday, September 27th, in time for dinner and the first meeting immediately following dinner.
- Departing flights for regular program guests: The return shuttle to the St. Louis Airport will be on Tuesday, October 1st, in time for 2:00 p.m. or later flights.
- There is no class on the morning of October 1st, and departure is at 9:00 a.m. immediately after breakfast.
- Departing flights for extended stay guests: The return shuttle to the St. Louis Airport will be on Thursday, October 3rd, in time for 2:00 p.m. or later flights.
- Cost: $80/person each way
Flying into Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF):
- Incoming flights: The Springfield, MO shuttle will depart for Cedars from the airport at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27th, in time for dinner and the first meeting immediately following dinner.
