Mary Baker Eddy reinforces the Psalmist’s thought when she says, God is at once the centre and circumference of being. (Science and Health page 204) Where else, then, would we want to put our trust? Would we feel more secure if we were to trust the evidence of sense testimony the unreliable testimony of the material senses? Citation S15 explains, The testimony of the material senses is neither absolute nor divine. … Seek reality and with God’s help you will surely find it and its 6 elements as defined by Mrs. Eddys in citation S6 and as developed in sections 1-5.
The plan of God, [the great architect, – Science & Health, 68] is for all of his children to express their highest selfhoods, to prosper, to be successful, and to do much good in everything they do. His rules are your guidelines [specifications, or specs] to a happy, successful life. [The first two standard Architectural spec categories are General Conditions and Removals, or No other gods and no graven images, or obsessions. Just as any quality builder wouldnt agree to accept a substandard product or method that would lead to an inferior building,] so you wouldn’t allow yourself to be tempted into doing something when you know in advance it will ruin your happiness and success. [We know The Ten Commandments in advance and they are very specific and mandatory. Theyre not just The Ten Suggestions.]
The two Psalms in the Responsive Reading show, if a person trusts his life to God, no matter what the immediate circumstances are, he can be assured of God’s unfailing care. Each section of the Bible Lesson emphasizes God’s rich Love for us and guides us in our efforts to enjoy the full benefits of this love by living in obedience to God enjoying the Life that is God, good.
The question in the lesson subject this week Is the universe including man evolved by atomic force? has a question behind it: Is everything composed and evolved of matter? or is everything the outcome of Mind, God? Christian Science answers with this sentence from the scientific statement of being: All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. (SH 468)
We will find our longings satisfied as we let go of the false concept that man’s life and mind are contained in matter and accept the spiritual truth of man made in the image and likeness of God, forever at one with Soul.
It gives me great pleasure to act according to the might and wisdom of God. The Merriam-Webster On-line Dictionary defines the word delight as something that gives great pleasure. In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy defines will as The might and wisdom of God. Truly to be governed by Love’s power and guided and informed by Mind’s wisdom is a guarantee that one’s life will be purposeful and good. Each of us does have God’s law written in our heart. This is God’s supreme design (Hymn 258), that His children would be most happy when they are doing the will of God, good. Because the law of God is a basic element of what we are made of, it makes sense that we are most happy when we are living in harmony with this law.
If you could have one or the other, which would you prefer a fountain of living waters or a leaky cistern? Take an old plastic cup that has a split in it, fill it with water and you’ll have a good idea of what a leaky cistern is like useless. Cisterns provided water to the people of Jerusalem. These cisterns were containers made of stones or carved out of rocks to collect rain water. If they had a leak in them they were useless. (The New Westminster Dictionary of the Bible) The people had turned from the worship of the one God to the worship of many god’s. Jeremiah warns the people that this pagan, matter based worship is like a leaky cistern, unreliable, bound to be empty when you need it most. He encourages the people to return to the one God who is a fountain of living waters always ready and filled to overflowing when you need it most.

Responsive Reading: The verses from Proverbs included in the Responsive Reading promise many benefits to those who are “wise,” to those who “keep sound wisdom.”(Prov 3:21,35) We are promised, life, grace, safety, glory, peace with enemies, and happiness. Thinking about the wonderful benefits that are received through wisdom you may find yourself asking Job’s questions: “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?” (Job 28:12) Job eventually found the wisdom he sought in the understanding that God is the only power and intelligence.
