There are those of you reading this who firmly believe in God. You love God and seek to follow God in your everyday lives. And in full faith you pray to God expecting results. But, your expectancy is that God will set aside challenging physical situations and will heal, harmonize, or resolve material conditions and circumstances. Perhaps you realize your inadequacies and expect that God can do it. Actually, you believe that God can do almost anything. Maybe you think of God as a supernatural being who will set aside natural laws and for a moment let spiritual laws shine through to the world or to creation.

I invite you to adjust your view of creation in the way the Bible points out. I invite you to dig into this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson on the Subject: Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force? I invite you to discover a universe, a creation, a world that God, Spirit creates, maintains, and evolves through Spirit not matter.

We begin with the Golden Text that is a statement from Christ Jesus, “…with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

Isn’t the Christmas season a time we celebrate an event that seems impossible to human thought, but so beautifully natural to divine thought? What we have is a powerful shining through to human existence of what is spiritually possible with God! For example, in Section 1 we find the prophecy about Immanuel, or God with us.

Section 1: Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.

The following prophecy from the Book of Isaiah certainly promises a unique situation that is completely outside the norms of human existence and would be considered a setting aside of the normal, everyday birth process

B3 | Isaiah 7:11, 14
“Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

This is where I invite you to make a shift about what you think concerning creation. Rather than viewing this prophecy as a miraculous setting aside of normal laws of birth, what if you begin to think of this as a fulfillment of how God’s ideas or creations really appear? The Science and Health citations explain:

S1 | 330:11–12
“God is infinite, the only Life, substance, Spirit, or Soul, the only intelligence of the universe, including man.”

S2 | 139:4–5, 8–9
“From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter. The Christian era was ushered in with signs and wonders.”

S3 | xi:14–21
“Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural. They are the sign of Immanuel, or “God with us,” — a divine influence ever present in human consciousness and repeating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime, To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense], And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised.”

It is faith in the naturalness of harmonious life, creation, and birth that often allows a Christian Science mother to pray and see this perfection shine through. Although so-called “material laws” or health beliefs are set aside, annulled, it is not a supernatural act, but a supremely natural act.

My brother Scott was born at home in Gadsden, Alabama. There was a doctor present and also a close friend of my mom’s who was a class-taught Christian Scientist. During the birth process the doctor became quite alarmed. There was a situation that concerned him greatly. He declared aloud that he had never seen a successful birth in this situation without dire consequences for the baby’s health.

My mom and her friend, Emily Daniel, prayed immediately with ideas from page 463 of Science and Health, “Teacher and student should also be familiar with the obstetrics taught by this Science. To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, you should so detach mortal thought from its material conceptions, that the birth will be natural and safe. Though gathering new energy, this idea cannot injure its useful surroundings in the travail of spiritual birth. A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive. The new idea, conceived and born of Truth and Love, is clad in white garments. Its beginning will be meek, its growth sturdy, and its maturity undecaying. When this new birth takes place, the Christian Science infant is born of the Spirit, born of God, and can cause the mother no more suffering. By this we know that Truth is here and has fulfilled its perfect work.” (SH 463:5)

The result was a harmonious birth in a situation where the doctors believed it was not possible. But as our Master states, “With God all things are possible.” And all the negative predictions for future life of my brother were completely negated. Although you would not compare this situation with the wonder-full birth of our beloved baby Jesus, Immanuel, the doctor became a tear-filled-eyes believer that day that with God all things are indeed possible.

Section 2: Spiritual sense of Mary and Joseph and angelic messages.

Isn’t it beautiful that both the young Mary and Joseph were both able and willing to hear the messages from God’s angels. Try to put yourself in their positions and see how ready you would be to listen, accept, and obey!

As Mary considered what she was hearing from the angel, “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (B7 | Luke 1: 34, 35, 37)

And dear Joseph? When his young fiancé was found to be with child, give him credit that the Bible tells us he was planning on being discreet. He was not planning some public scandal. But while he was considering that, Joseph also received an angel visitant.

“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.” (B8 | Matthew 1:19, 20, 24, 25)

Only because of the open, receptive thought of these two special individuals have we experienced this wonderful, divine event. How important it is to listen, to accept, to obey the inspiring messages that come to us from the God that created the universe. How wonderful when the reality of God’s universe comes shining through to us, shining with the glory of God. These divine messages, God’s angels, bring to us the reality of our spiritual being, the reality of God’s spiritual universe.

In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “The illumination of Mary’s spiritual sense put to silence material law and its order of generation, and brought forth her child by the revelation of Truth, demonstrating God as the Father of men. The Holy Ghost, or divine Spirit, overshadowed the pure sense of the Virgin-mother with the full recognition that being is Spirit. The Christ dwelt forever an idea in the bosom of God, the divine Principle of the man Jesus, and woman perceived this spiritual idea, though at first faintly developed. Man as the offspring of God, as the idea of Spirit, is the immortal evidence that Spirit is harmonious and man eternal. Jesus was the offspring of Mary’s self-conscious communion with God.” (S5 | 29:20–1)

Recently a friend from Cape Town, South Africa, Rose Deary, shared with me an experience she had as a little girl when she heard an angel message.

“Because of the start WW2 back around 1939 I was sent to boarding school at the tender age of 8. My sister, Lesley, was just about finishing at the same school. I had only been there about one term when there was an outbreak of measles. I appeared to manifest this belief and was put into a dormitory with several older girls, including Lesley. My parents had only recently been introduced to Christian Science so my mum asked that I been given no medication, to which they agreed. After a day or so there was no sign of measles but one morning one of the bigger girls in a bed the other side of the room said something to me which I could not hear. I saw her mouth moving and she was looking directly at me. I made no reply, not having heard her, so she repeated it. Still I could not hear. My sister became alarmed and called the matron. Cut long story short! The school doctor diagnosed mastoiditis. My parents were told I would probably be deaf for my whole life. It was just about half term and were allowed to go home. Our home was pretty temporary; with Dad being in the Royal Navy we moved around a lot. It was a mews flat in London and my bedroom was on the ground floor and I was very frightened. I could not hear anything and when there was an air raid my mum came to tell me not to be scared. The practitioner, Geith Plimmer, was asked to treat me. In the middle of the night I suddenly heard a clear voice telling me, “not to be afraid I am with you.” My fear left and I went to sleep. In the morning I found my hearing had returned and from that day on I had very acute hearing.” Rose Deary, Cape Town, South Africa.

Section 3: Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy. Luke 2: 8-18

What a night it must have been when the shepherds heard and saw Angels and heavenly hosts praising God. Can we not remain open to these heavenly visitants? Why can’t we be just like these Shepherds of yore and hear and see the heavenly hosts?

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, “Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea, — the reflection of God, — has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth.” (S11 | 333:19–23)

In many ways you could say as we pray, listen, and reach out to God, we are the recipients many times of messages from heavenly hosts that praise and glorify God and bring to us peace and healing. Often in a sweet assurance that all is well, not always in a loud voice but sometimes a tangible certainty that yes, indeed all is well, was well, and will be well. This glimpse of the message of the Christ comes in many wonderful ways. It is not just in pastures filled with sheep and shepherds, but often in church congregations, in sick rooms and hospital rooms. Anywhere that a spiritually hungry heart reaches out to the Christ for comfort and healing.

I was touched recently when a student of Christian Science had practical needs that required a hospital visit. Prayer affirmed that this was a holy event and that God’s Love preceded and supported every step of this event. The last decision of this Christian Scientist was to grab a brand-new copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as he left the house. He had a plan. Although the reception at the hospital was okay, it did involve something many hospital visitors face—a very long wait. This need received an immediate prayerful response. And also, upon arrival they were told, “there is no room in the inn,” there were no rooms available. Another immediate prayerful response. The next report was that the wait had ended, a room was available, and that this loving Christian Scientist had shared the copy of Science and Health he had brought with a lovingly receptive doctor. After a few days the journey home was a joyous one. The practical needs had been met and this loving Christian Scientist had let the light of the Christ shine in his visit. There is absolutely no place we can be, nor circumstance or condition we can be in, where we cannot be in the presence of the heavenly hosts praising God. Yes, even in a barnyard or stable, the Christ message can ring forth.

Section 4: The reality and practical help of angel messages.

Consider these supportive angel examples:
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” (B11 | Psalms 91:2, 11)

“… behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” (B12 | Matthew 2:13 behold)

How vitally important for each of us to prayerfully prepare our thought to receive and heed angel messages from our Father-Mother God.

Joseph heard and obeyed the angel that warned him to take Mary and the young child (Jesus) out of Israel into Egypt because of the vicious threat from Herod to seek out and destroy this little child. And there in Egypt they remained until they got the news that Herod was dead.

We read in Science and Health, “Led on by the grossest element of mortal mind, Herod decreed the death of every male child in order that the man Jesus, the masculine representative of the spiritual idea, might never hold sway and deprive Herod of his crown. The impersonation of the spiritual idea had a brief history in the earthly life of our Master; but “of his kingdom there shall be no end,” for Christ, God’s idea, will eventually rule all nations and peoples — imperatively, absolutely, finally — with divine Science.” (S15 | 565:9–18)

Jealousy, fear and the lust for power often threatens legitimate governance. When we remember the Biblical promise, “The government shall be on his shoulder” we have an effective basis for prayer. Mary Baker Eddy alertly warned us of worldly power that tries to impede divine Science and the governance by Principle.

She wrote: “The powers of this world will fight, and will command their sentinels not to let truth pass the guard until it subscribes to their systems; but Science, heeding not the pointed bayonet, marches on.” (S16 | 225:8–11)

Years ago, my friend, Christina Trentini, was praying diligently about the Falklands/Malvinas crisis off the coast of Argentina. She was particularly concerned when fellow Brazilians began to volunteer in the conflict on the side of Argentina. As she prayed [to know herself and all spiritually] she came across a Brazilian statute that forbid Brazilians from joining the armed forces of another country. If they did they would lose their Brazilian citizenship. Her prayers continued. She was led to telephone the leading newscaster in Brazil and simply said, “Is it not the fact that a Brazilian volunteering in the armed forces of another land loses their citizenship in Brazil?” On that night’s broadcast the following message went out, “Through our investigations we have found that it is not lawful for Brazilians to join the armed forces of another country without losing their Brazilian citizenship.” The trend stopped immediately. One individual listening and praying with God’s angel messages protected her countryman.

With God all things are possible, even if you are just one. Famous abolitionist, Frederick Douglas, is quoted as saying, “One and God make a majority.”

Christina Trentini knew herself spiritually and proved Mary Baker Eddy’s strategic victory tip: “Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.” (S18 | 571:16–19)

Section 5: The evolution of Good governs the universe, now.

How special to discover that what governs the universe in reality is God. God’s Love, God’s Good. This is law and includes man. Present law. A universe that has never been abandoned, set aside, or diminished. A spiritual universe that only needs to be seen and experienced through demonstration – just as our Master, Christ Jesus did as the following citations record for us.

B14 | Acts 10:38 God
“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

B15 | John 6:16–21
“And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, 17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. 18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. 19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. 20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. 21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

B16 | Matthew 9:35
“And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”

S20 | 232:9–12
“Scripture informs us that “with God all things are possible,” — all good is possible to Spirit; but our prevalent theories practically deny this, and make healing possible only through matter.”

I often ask myself, “What are you waiting for?” It is not setting aside or trying to remove one universe for another. It truly is demonstrating, glimpsing, seeing, that with God, with His Christ, with divine Science, the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, we can live in and know the one universe that is God’s. It is already here. It is already fact. It has always been fact. Just like when Jesus entered the ship and it was immediately at the shore. A vision of that fact and its demonstration inspired the following poem.

“Already There”

(as Jesus was in Matt. 14:22-33 and John 6:16-21 (B15)

I was learning to stick with my Coach (The Christ).

Even if he was not in the boat.

His words always stuck with me

Over waves and rowing through the wind.

He talked to us about the faith to persevere.

He said the tiniest faith could push through the wind.

He even said tiny faith could remove mountains of obstacles.

"Remove hence" and they would be gone!

But faith in what? Faith in who? And when?

Faith in Spirit! Faith in Good! Faith in Love!

When? Now and always. At darkest times.

Faith not in some body or somebody.

Faith in His presence. Faith in His power.

Faith in His peace. Faith in His stillness.

Rough seas ahead? Waves pounding your boat?

Fear not, only believe. Fear not and know.

Then came that day. I'll never forget.

He stayed behind. He sent us ahead.

He talked with a few seekers. He steadied their thought.

He comforted. He loved. He encouraged.

But then we were alone. Alone in the boat.

We rowed in vain, against strong headwinds of fear.

Then we saw something coming. Right over the waves.

A ghost? A spirit? Coming toward us!

Our fear welled up within us like a mighty wave.

We're doomed to failure! No hope for us now.

But then our Coach called. A Christ message to each of us. It's me, not a ghost.

It's the Christ walking over all waves of fear

Peter answered, if it’s you, then me too!

Okay. Come join me. What I do you can do.

Peter stepped out and moved forward. He was there too.

Until…till…his fear overwhelmed him, he sank.

But just a bit…just a tiny bit under…till the hand…

Yes, that loving hand extended and he was in the ship safe and sound.

But guess what we landed in that instant.

We were already there. No waiting. No effort.

Already there! Safe. Secure. No time. No fear.

Already there with our Coach at our side.

Already there in Christ's comfort. Already there with no fear.

We just had to listen.

We just had to hear

Faith in the Christ moved mountains of fear.

Faith in the Christ, we're already there.

Yes, already there!

Section 6: The Christ with us, God’s omnipotence with us. Possible!

[As we accept these powerful promises, infinite possibilities joyfully open to us all.]

B17 | Psalms 97:1, 6
“The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. 6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.”

B18 | II Corinthians 2:14
“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”

B19 | Revelation 19:6 Alleluia
“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

S26 | 496:15 15
“Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, 18 based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, over- lying, and encompassing all true being.”

Two healings come to mind that absolutely remove the elements of matter substance and time as a factor in healing. Simply the Truth made manifest. Demonstrating what is possible with God, with Christ.

The first is from the Chapter on Fruitage in Science and Health.

I have felt for some time I should give my experience in mental surgery. In May, 1902, going home for lunch, on a bicycle, and while riding down a hill at a rapid gait, I was thrown from the wheel, and falling on my left side with my arm under my head, the bone was broken about half-way between the shoulder and elbow. While the pain was intense, I lay still in the dust, declaring the truth and denying that there could be a break or accident in the realm of divine Love, until a gentleman came to assist me, saying, he thought I had been stunned. I was only two and a half blocks from home, so I mounted my wheel again and managed to reach it. On arriving there I lay down and asked my little boy to bring me our textbook. He immediately brought Science and Health, which I read for about ten minutes, when all pain left.

“I said nothing to my family of the accident, but attended to some duties and was about half an hour late in returning to the office, this being my only loss of time from work. My friends claimed that the arm had not been broken, as it would have been impossible for me to continue my work without having it set, and carrying it in a sling until the bone knit together. Their insistence almost persuaded me that I might have been mistaken, until one of my friends invited me to visit a physician's office where they were experimenting with an X-ray machine. The physician was asked to examine my left arm to see if it differed from the ordinary. On looking through it, he said, “Yes, it has been broken, but whoever set it made a perfect job of it, and you will never have any further trouble from that break.” My friend then asked the doctor to show how he could tell where the break had been. The doctor pointed out the place as being slightly thicker at that part, like a piece of steel that had been welded. This was the first of several cases of mental surgery that have come under my notice, and it made a deep impression on me.

“For the benefit of others who may have something similar to meet, I will say that I have overcome almost constant attacks of sick headaches, extending back to my earliest recollection.” — L. C. S., Salt Lake City, Utah.

(SH 605:25–607:5)

And the second healing is a little more personal. It is a healing from my Dad’s experience, perhaps his first healing. I am not sure about that. Dad was working collections as a debit insurance man early 1940s. While working he fell through a wooden porch and it appeared he broke his leg. His coworker helped him to the car and then home. When dad came inside and Mom saw his apparent injury she asked if she should call the local Christian Science Practitioner there in Lakeland, Florida. Dad agreed. Mom called Aunt Patti to pray for dad. Dad ate lunch, took a nap, woke up and walked into the living room. “I think I will go back to work. I don”t think my leg was really broken because you cannot break your leg in the morning and go back to work in the afternoon!” Dad was fine. A short time after this Dad volunteered for the Army and underwent a very thorough physical exam. All was well. The only comment from the examining doctor, “Well I can see you had a broken leg. But, it is perfectly healed and probably stronger than the other one.” Dad’s jaw dropped, “So it was broken.” Guess what went on during the long troop ship ride heading for the Philippines? Dad read Science and Health for the first time.

Possible, oh yeah. With God all things are possible. The universe is God’s. It is a really good universe! And, if we choose [to accept it], we are included in demonstrating that wonderful, spiritual, universe where all good is possible. It is there for the seeing.
