“Mortals and Immortals”

Immortal? Who me? Yes, you!

Immortal, but not like a comic book super hero, or a descendent of mythical Greek gods or a strange night-living creature that preys on mortals to survive. And certainly not immortal as in trying to make a human being, a mortal body, live forever.

Immortal, as a spiritual idea of God’s creating. The actual Bible based concept of an immortal existence that is discovered through spiritual understanding and living the teachings of the Christ. Yes, the immortal you that is the blessed child of God, made in God’s image and likeness,spiritual, perfect, and yes indeed, immortal, as the Apostle Paul writes, “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” I Corinthians 15:53.

But don’t look to a Google or Bing internet search expecting to discover this divine sense of immortality that is your true inheritance. If you really want to find out more about your very own path to immortality, try an in-depth study of this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson!

When I made my internet search request I did not discover any threads that led me to the Bible based concept of immortality. I was not referred to the five Bible verses in the King James Version that specifically refer to immortality. I was not referred to the Apostle Paul’s letter to his young friend Timothy, referring him to, “the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:” II Tim 1:10 by

But when I got to the Bible Lesson…I hit the jackpot!

The Golden Text: Matthew 25:34 “…Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:”

In Matthew chapter 25 there are three parables of Jesus,

  • Parable of the Ten Virgins (25:1-13)
  • Parable of the talents (25:14–30)
  • The Sheep and the Goats (25:31–46)

The Golden Text is from the last parable, The Sheep and the Goats. It is the blessing that falls upon those who live and love in response to the Christ. As Jesus relates in the parable,

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Have you ever thought of those actions as a beginning to discover your immortality? This is a powerful call to live love. Love in action. The context for the Golden Text begins our instruction on the path to immortality, to inheriting a kingdom prepared for us from the “foundation of the world.”

Some insights that Warren, CedarS Executive Director, offered come from Bible Researcher and Christian Scientist, Cobbey Crisler. Warren recorded Cobbey saying the following, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” was what Jesus said he would say to the righteous (sheep) on the right side of the throne of glory. [This fulfills the prophesy of Ps. 78:2 as mentioned in Matt. 13:35.]
“From the foundation of the world” refers of course to Genesis 1 and the dominion man who was to appear on earth as in heaven—with immense implications and healing results [as in Matthew 14:36 and 15:38.]

Jesus states that the reason the righteous are to inherit the dominion-man “kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world” is that when they saw the most marginalized and least favored members of humanity—the homeless, wretched, imprisoned and sick— they reached out to them and fed them and their “famished affections” and cared for them like a good shepherd would—and in so doing, also did so for Christ Jesus. By saying this Jesus takes the self-satisfied in his audiences and stretches them to another place by really shooting the bar up.” (Transcribed from notes in the margins of Warren’s Bible from a talk by Cobbey Crisler)

The Responsive Reading I John 3:1–3; 2:14–17 includes the verses we know from the conclusion of every Christian Science Church service. It is the Correlative Scripture to the Scientific Statement of Being (SH 468)

Warren attended another talk by Cobbey Crisler sponsored by CedarS Camps on the topic: “The Church: Its Scriptural Continuity” and made these notes in his Bible,

I John 3, verse 2 starts in such a tender way—“Beloved”—and gives the present time—“now”! It is also all gender-inclusive since the Greek word that the King James Version translates “sons of God” really should be “children of God.” … “when he (God) shall appear, we shall be like him (his likeness as in Genesis 1); for we shall see him as he is. (the Greek word translated see here carries the meaning of recognize mentally or perceive spiritually.”

Section 1: Christian Science revealing man’s immortality.

This section lays the foundation for our claim to immortality. Each Bible verse establishes that it is God that is creating.

B 1 | John 1:1–3 clearly states that, “All things were made by him (God): and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

B4 | I Corinthians 2:12, 16 “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God… we have the mind of Christ.”

The “mind of Christ” is the key to discovering this “Immortal Mind,” that is God. The following citation from Science and Health helps us understand the kind of thinking that leads to a true understanding of immortality.


GOD: Divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, Mind.

MAN: God’s spiritual idea, individual, perfect, eternal.

IDEA: An image in Mind; the immediate object of understanding. — Webster.

Here are some interesting insights from Cobbey Crisler related to the beginning of the Gospel of John,

B1, John 1:1-3: “In the beginning”

“John 1:1. John starts off unlike any of the preceding gospels. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He starts off, as a matter of fact, as only one other book of the Bible begins. Notice Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Do you think the early readers of his gospel would have recognized that? Do you think that was John's intent? That it should be recognized?”

“There is something that is a major clue to studying the Bible. That is, when you get the remotest hint of an Old Testament verse in the New Testament, don't ignore it or put it aside. It’s there for a very deep reason. It probably holds the key to the meaning of the New Testament event, or the author would not have included it. …

“But then we come to a word which John uses in the first chapter and uses again in successive chapters but never with the same connotation. It stands out in its uniqueness and it is so emphatically important to the author that we have to just dwell on it somewhat and see what it might mean.

“Let me give you a partial history of the word. What automatically occurs to you as the meaning of logos? We take this word, "Word," and identify it with logos. This is likely being written at some point during the 1st century A.D. Way back in the 6th century B.C., Heraclitus at Ephesus was attempting philosophically to explain continuity amid all the flux around him. He resorted to logos as the eternal principle of order in the universe, the kind of reliable, unchanging law and order. …When you go behind the word to the thought, you're dealing with ideas, concepts, and the meaning. It is where all human languages finally give up their fragmentation and meet, and become one, in a Pentecostal day of infinite communication. The "word" is but an instrument which we must meet at the thought or at the meaning. Then, no barriers, especially language barriers, can stand between us and comprehension of one another, of the universe, its laws, and the source of those laws.

“Do you know where we use logos in the English language? Biology, physiology. Logos is the one that has been used to define the sciences in the English language. This was the comprehension at least of the lexicographers who developed our own language of the Greek term. Look how it's lasted even in our language. We use it all the time without realizing it, taking it for granted. Is there a scientific connotation, then, that "In the beginning,” "In the first principle of things,” there is a scientific unvarying, inalienable, order that's ruling. And that it's not only being uttered as an expression or word, but behind it is the immense thought that also must be based on the same principle. Notice in Verse 1 of Chapter 1 that it all related with and to God.

“John 1:3 continues with a statement that is quite absolute, "All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." Is there any reservation for qualifications? "All things were made by him. That is [an] enormous commitment to make at the beginning of a book. The theology of this book is therefore committed right squarely on what principle if we're now defining the theological principle on which the Bible is based? Not only oneness of God, but the fact He's one, also means He's all. "All things were made by Him.” Everything is created by Him. That also poses problems, because all we have to do is open our eyes and look around us. And what we see, we'd rather not think was created by God. But as of now, we've just started the book. So, let's see what the style of the author is and his theological commitments. "All things were made by Him.”

“He doesn't leave it there. The very next sentence adds, “Without him was not any thing made that was made." Why is he saying that? Why Him,” doesn’t that take care of the other part? What is the difference? What’s the distinction that he is implanting in his readers' thought right at the beginning of the book? "All things were made by Him.” What would you call that? That kind of statement is an absolute, but is it also an affirmation. It's a real solid plus. This is a plus of the theological view of John. "All things were made by Him."

“What have we got now? Denial. Here is how we're going to deal with the minus element. The minus element is without Him, "without him was not any thing made that was made.” Any hint of a minus existing after the all-things-were-made-by­ him being declared, is removed, because it is the other side of the same coin.

“The plus, the minus, the affirmation, the denial is a mathematical approach. Dealing with the plus, dealing with the minus and ending up with one, not dualism. One, so there’s no doubt that the key to the gospel is monotheism. It challenges the reader’s thought to see if he’s there at that altitude before he continues any further in the gospel. It forces the reader to get to that height in order to remotely communicate with what’s in the gospel.”

Section 2 – 5: The Prodigal Son. Mortality has nothing to do with the real you! Wake up to the enduring, eternal, immortal Love of your Father-Mother.

Luke 15: 11-32 The Parable of the Prodigal Son.

When Jesus shared this parable don’t you think he was hoping to save us all a lot of suffering? The younger son discontented with the dull life at home just had to go out into the world of “eat,drink, and be merry!” Instead the young man found himself ready to eat pig’s slop just to survive—that is until he woke up! If we could really take his message to heart we might content ourselves in very different endeavors. What is it that really will make us happy? What is it that will really satisfy?

How about if we go back to before the younger son got “ants in his pants” and had to leave home. Was it his father’s fault? Was he mistreated at home? Later in the story we get an incredible sense of this father’s tender, all-forgiving love, but don’t you think that was always the father’s nature?

So why did the younger son leave? We can only speculate, but for example. In society at that time it was the first son that had the prospects. He would receive the entire inheritance. The older son was guaranteed of good things to come. The younger son, he only could look forward to serving at his brother’s behest. Does that echo a little of what many young people appear to face these days? Not really needed. Not an essential part of the family. Questionable hopes for job, career. Hopeless, empty existence. And that sense of little opportunity might just lead to an attitude of escape, hopelessness, and live for the day, throw it away mentality. (The word prodigal means “wasteful extravagance.”)

And that is exactly where “waking up” comes into the game. Coming to our senses. Arising from the pig slop, the left-over husks in the field and simply realizing there has got to be something better. Even if it involves being a servant, at least there is food and a place to stay!

As Mrs. Eddy writes in our textbook,

S12 | 22:3 “Vibrating like a pendulum between sin and the hope of forgiveness, — selfshness and sensuality causing constant retrogression, — our moral progress will be slow. Waking to Christ’s demand, mortals experience suffering. This causes them, even as drowning men, to make vigorous efforts to save themselves; and through Christ’s precious love these efforts are crowned with success.”

S13 | 552:16–19 “Mortals must emerge from this notion of material life as all-in-all. They must peck open their shells with Christian Science, and look outward and upward.”

It is a good thing that Warren was a good listener and also a good note taker. Some further notes in the margins of his Bible relate to Bible citations B7 and B8:

B7 | I Corinthians 15:50, 53, 54 “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”

B8 | II Corinthians 5:1, 4, 6 “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

Here’s what Cobbey Crisler said from notes in Warren’s Bible about citations B7 & B8:
“Another conclusion is coming through Paul’s receptivity. He presents two views, one with man within an egg origin, one out of an egg origin. A chicken takes 10,000 pecks to get out of its shell of limitation. Bible pioneers like Paul worked hard to get out of their limited, mortal shells and they communicated this to us.

I Corinthians 15, verse 50 “…flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God” One might ask Why are we trying to drag flesh along as if it’s a party? [This relates to Mary Baker Eddy’s observation: “Being in sympathy with matter, the worldly man is at the beck and call of error, and will be attracted thitherward.” [S&H 21:25 (S11)] Take up your bed and walk—Mind suddenly takes on the glow of our original glory.”

Cobbey Crisler on B8 II Corinthians 5:1-6
II Cor. 5, verse 1. Where we are now is a tabernacle, which if “dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens…” (We look out of heavenly consciousness—every window has a heavenly view. We worship where we live—Our bodies are our ultimate idols, if we are living there.

Verse 4. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened:” Jesus said “take my yoke upon you for my yoke is easy and my burden light.”…

Verse 6. It’s not what we see but what we know that matters: “Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord.” This is one of the most radical statements in the whole Bible that is virtually skated over.

It is foolhardy to adapt ourselves to live in corporeality. You are a tenant in a tomb if at home in the body. Why be so satisfied with data coming to us from the 5 channels of the corporeal senses?

Socrates said “The dead body will not be me. Don’t let him talk about burying Socrates. Say only that you are burying the body.”

Ishmael (In Moby Dick said “My body is but the lees of my better being.”

It seems that good thinkers have always had faith in a sense of immortality awaiting man. For example during a political debate on June 17, 1858 Abraham Lincoln is quoted as saying, “Surely God would not have created such a being as man, with an ability to grasp the infinite, to exist only for a day! No, no, man was made for immortality.”

The faith, the certainty, that man is indeed much more than a fleeting, fleshly being is the call of the Christ coming to consciousness. The call of a Shepherd to his beloved flock. And those hungering and ready to come to themselves as God’s beloved and blessed children do hear that call.

As we read in the Gospel of John B19 | John 10:27–30 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.”

As Cobbey Crisler writes in his book about the Gospel of John…

“Chapter 10. Not too many of us keep sheep anymore. So, this is a lost simile on the twentieth century. Should we be keeping sheep in the real meaning of it? What could you and I do more about our job, our home, our world, our political situation, our community, and church, if we introduced more of the shepherd motive into all of them?…

John 10:13 shows the difference between the shepherd-motive and the hireling’s motive who was working just for pay. “The hireling fleeth, because that’s all he was working for is money.” Where’s the difference? “He doesn’t care.”
Let’s ask ourselves the question, do we care? If we care, that’s the shepherd motive. Jesus cared. He walked in the midst of the dissolute, the despairing, the injured, the grieved, and the broken in heart, as well as in body. And nobody knew why he did it. The upper classes, those who didn’t have similar problems, wondered why he was with the publicans and sinners. But he said that “the whole didn’t need a physician” (Matt. 9:12; Mark 4:23; Luke 5:31).
He apparently contemplated an Israel in prophecy which the existing Israel, the establishment, had not remotely seen.
He saw the Israel in prophecy which is exactly in accord with Jeremiah’s prediction of the new covenant and Isaiah’s. The new Israel would be composed of those whose needs had been met, where the recipients were, no class, no mass, no private sector, no ghetto, but receptivity gathering the sons and daughters together. They are gathered to prove what is possible on earth as in heaven. The shepherd motive of caring brings us into that new Israel.”

[“Jesus says that he is the Shepherd and he also says he is the door. It may look like he is confused. Let me give you an example of how he isn’t. When my wife and I were in Israel, we stopped in a place between Jerusalem and Bethany. I saw what I thought was an unattended flock of sheep. There was also a rock wall with one door or gate. It was an almost complete square. As I wandered around, I was suddenly surprised by the shepherd whom I had disturbed. He rose up. He was stretched across that entry way, getting a few winks.
Right there I had illustrated what Jesus meant in John 10: 2, 11, 14, “I am the shepherd” and in John 10: 7, 9, “I am the door.” Now there was no confusion at all. With the sheep inside an enclosure and the only possible entrance of wild animals or thieves being that door, you had to get through the shepherd in order to get to the sheep. The shepherd was also the door.
In Mary Baker Eddy’s poem, “Feed My Sheep”, there is the statement, “I will listen for Thy voice.” [Hymn 304] While we were down in that area of Beersheba, we saw many sheep all mixed together. I said to Janet, ‘I wonder how the shepherd is ever going to sort out his sheep. They’re all just mingled together.’ … It wasn’t very long before our shepherd separated himself from the crowd, walked away never looked over his shoulder at the mixed-up sheep, but made some kind of identifying click or clack of his tongue or voice.
“Do you know that every one of his sheep separated themselves from that flock and followed him? He never doubted. He never looked back. The sheep did their job. The sheep knew his voice. “I will listen for Thy voice.” These lessons are things that in the busy moments of our own twentieth century we need to contemplate. They’re not just symbols. They’re not done just as ancient history. They’re attitudes. They’re states of mind and thought. This is something we often need to consider.” In John 10:30, is Jesus’ great statement, “I and my Father are one.” If this is from the Aramaic, then, the Aramaic word would give the meaning, “I and my Father are in accord.”

During what was known as The Great Depression in America a friend of mine left his home in Ohio. He was 14 years old. He did not tell his mother he was going, he just left. Soon he joined a carnival and travelled the country with that carnival. Two years later he found himself in a park in Texas. He had not contacted his mother in that entire time. As he sat on a park bench an elderly lady came up to him and they began to talk. He opened up to her and told about his travels. She began to talk to him about something called Christian Science. After a while she asked if he would like to call his mother. He said yes he would. She gave him a nickel and he went to the nearest pay phone to call his mother. When she answered he excitedly told her about his new discovery, Christian Science. He could hardly wait to come home and tell her about it. Then his mother told him that she had just returned home after her first appointment with a Christian Science Practitioner. (It seems there were two sheep listening to their Shepherd that day!) That call of the Shepherd resulted in a very happy homecoming and a life devoted to Christian Science.

Section 6: Original immortality, time to return to our Father-Mother’s welcoming embrace.

It is pretty special to be able to conclude with the entire last section! A wonderfully sweet and powerful conclusion in our journey towards immortality.

B 21 | Deuteronomy 33:12 “The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.”

B22 | I Timothy 1:17 “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

S31 | 29:30–32 “Man as the offspring of God, as the idea of Spirit, is the immortal evidence that Spirit is harmonious and man eternal.”

S32 | 81:17–18 “Man in the likeness of God as revealed in Science cannot help being immortal.”

In last month’s Met on “Unreality” I inadvertently combined two very special testimonies inaccurately. Through the great love and alertness of one of our beloved CedarS subscribers we were able to track down the actual facts in the two experiences. Both beautiful testimonies entail the healing of adoptive children of seemingly unhealable handicaps. But since the Science of Love, the Science of Christ is never limited by mortal claims these wonderful healings took place. Accounts of each healing follow along with the locations where the complete healing can be read.

In an affidavit from Doris E. Wiederkehr of Mar Vista, California it is related that she and her husband were asked to adopt an unwanted child. Prenatal tests indicated that the child would be born handicapped. The birth took place in 1947. The child was born with multiple handicaps including unformed vocal cords, a damaged heart, and a serious bone condition. They were also told that the child had cerebral palsy and that there was very little that could be done medically. Mrs. Wiederkehr writes, “As a Christian Scientist, I could not accept this verdict. I had been healed earlier of a curvature of the spine and had learned to trust and turn to God.”

The handicaps were healed over several years. Each condition healed through prayer, love, and hard work. Their son Les left behind these mortal labels and has led a healthy, happy life married and fully employed. His father became an active Christian Science church member and his mom a Christian Science Practitioner.

And here is the experience which I shared in last month’s CedarS Met. But which I confused somewhat with the Wiederkehr”s experience. The following experience can be found in full on the website, JSH Online.

Aileen and Paul Cord had made plans for the adoption of a baby. They had qualified and were allowed to adopt their son, Matthew. And then the adoption agency called and asked them to consider adopting another infant, Craig. Craig had already been placed but that had not worked out. There were claims of handicap. Aileen told the agency rep that she would have to “pray about it.” The representative told her, “That is exactly why I am calling you so that you will pray in Christian Science.” After the night’s prayer Aileen and Paul knew they had to accept a second child. And they did.

“Aileen: I didn't know if I was ready for this. I didn't know if I could do this. I hadn't had any experience at all with handicapped children. … I certainly had a curiosity as to what the child would look like. However, [I] did not feel that the child's physical appearance should in any way affect our decision. My recollection of that night is [of] not much sleep and a whole lot of praying. I've always been able to trust God. But this somehow was being able to trust my ability to trust God. This was certainly reminiscent of Jesus' night in Gethsemane, before the crucifixion when he prayed, Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from my lips, but nevertheless, not my will, but Thine be done.1 Well, somewhere during the night I realized that I had another option. That I didn't have to look at this as taking a handicapped child into my home. That I could look at this as an opportunity to see God's creation. Mary Baker Eddy says in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health: "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry." … I could expect good for this child in our home. [In reality,] he was the offspring, the creation, [of God] the outcome of God's love. And I certainly couldn't be hesitant about taking more love into our home. If God is Love, and He is giving us the ability to be loving, then He's going to show us how to use that love. So by morning I felt that it was right for us to take this child, who seemed to need what we had to offer: prayer in Christian Science, which offered him hope. Here was another opportunity to express God's love in our life. And everybody would be blessed. It wouldn't be a burden.”

“We were praying every day to see him as normal and a welcome addition to our family and a normal part of it. We called a practitioner, a Christian Science practitioner, and asked her to support us in our prayer for this baby. Things just proceeded normally. The fears expressed never came about. They were expecting the eyesight to deteriorate. That never happened. He developed and grew. He sat up. He walked. All symptoms of anything connected with this early childhood prognosis completely disappeared. His head was unusually large for his body at that time. But today, he's now nineteen and … he's physically healthy and played football in high school. He lives in his own apartment. He holds a full-time job. And he's living an independent life today.”
