[Give a life of gratitude for Spirit’s substance! “Walk Your Talk” to Walk Away from Any Wreck!]
Metaphysical Application ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on

“Substance”
for September 15, 2013

[Bracketed inserts are from Warren Huff, who was a late substitute as Met Editor]

Golden Text [& B-17]: [show our gratitude and live it by “walking our talk”].

Section 1: This section gives practical examples of the blessings of God’s [favor and] in our lives. [As we sing in Hymn 263 let’s gratefully embrace God, [the perfect gift giver]?! As James 1:17 (B-3) says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” … [Read about a perfect Huff-family Christmas gift from God at the end of Section 5.]

Section 2: Daniel [and his exiled teenage friends], in the spirit of serving God exclusively and walking their talk, suggests an alternative diet. Instead of wine and meat Daniel and his buddies ask to have pulse (essentially vegetables) and water. After ten days Daniel and his friends are examined only to reveal that they are “fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children who did eat the portion of the king’s meat.” To preface this story, the Bible lesson quotes from Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” [B-4] Common sense would say that if you eat vegetables instead of meat, you will get thinner, NOT fatter. When we rely on God alone, we may be led to do things that don’t make sense materially; it’s ok. As Jesus says in this section, “Blessed are thy which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” [B-6, Matt. 5:6] All of God’s goodness that is [sprinkled so abundantly] throughout this lesson is ours to embrace [and to “eat up”] whenever we want. “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.” [S-5]

Section 3: The Bible story in this section is about Jesus healing the centurion’s servant. [Click here to see this centurion skit acted out this summer by CedarS Junior Counselors and campers to help bring this healing to life for them. To get the script and its application questions, you can click on it under the Download menu to the upper right.][It seems likely that it was well known here in Capernaum about Jesus recently long-distance healing of the son of the nobleman in Capernaum that had recently been performed by Jesus who himself was yet ~16 miles away in Cana (John 4:46-54). One wonders if the centurion had heard about this unique, omnipresent availability of Christian healing. Whether or not he had heard of this case of distance healing, the centurion had clearly thought out the logic of it.]

Section 4: Jesus multiplication of the loaves and fishes is featured in this section [and was also acted out this summer by CedarS campers at http://www.cedarscamps.org/videos/categories/2425012/ . To get the script of this skit and its application questions, you can click on it under the Download menu to the upper right.][This is a powerful proof of Mind’s divine precision and abundance.] [S-16]… [Just as before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:38-44), so also before Jesus fed the multitude, he took time to give thanks in advance to God! He thanked God aloud so that centuries later we know to reverse the material model of worrying (or ingratitude in advance) with the immortal model of giving gratitude in advance. ][Next time we are tempted to be worried about any issue, we can have F.A.I.T.H. (Forward All Issues To Heaven),]

Section 5: The story in Acts 27 is about Paul being taken on a boat to sail “by the coasts of Asia.” A huge storm comes along that is so severe that “neither sun nor stars in many days appeared.” [B-13] … Paul shows the protection that God has promised when he says, “Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.” Right in the middle of a “world-ending” storm, the right idea of Paul getting to where he needed to be has authority over the scary weather. Mrs. Eddy says, “The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares.” [S-22, 574] By his faith in this message from God everybody is saved! [Remember how F.A.I.T.H. can stand for Forward All Issues To Heaven.] When you find yourself in “stormy weather” in your jobs, home, etc. remember God is already there with built-in protection for you and all! Stop worrying (being ungrateful in advance), listen to and follow angel messages!
[I’ll never forget or stop being grateful for the total Paul-like protection our family experienced many years ago when we were “shipwrecked” in a massive December 30th ice storm in Oklahoma. We were heading home for a New Year’s Eve family activity that was anticipated with great joy by our 10-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter when a sudden and heavy ice storm laid down a thick sheet of ice on the roads. Like 60 other cars on that stretch of highway that day we ending up “totaling” our vehicle. Our van seemed to be out of control as it slid off the highway and flipped over and over again as it rolled down a 35-foot-high embankment. We all climbed out of windows that were all shattered (and now facing skyward) and all walked away without a scratch! We were quickly rescued and taken in by a dear CedarS family who lived very nearby. When all roads were closed the following day (a Sunday) we shared in wonderful meals, their home church service, and in Shelton cattle ranch duties and spent a very happy and holy New Year’s Eve with them. On the first business day we were able to quickly find a perfect replacement van nearby and returned home with winds of gratitude under our “wings”, knowing that God had graciously protected us, provided for us and saved us for life-missions to bless that lay ahead for each to fulfill.]

The above application ideas are provided primarily to help CedarS campers and staff (as well as friends) see and daily demonstrate the great value of studying and applying the Christian Science Bible lessons throughout the year, not just at camp! [Please support: CedarS Matched “Maintenance Musts Fund” where $25,000 is needed & will be matched for proper upkeep of mission-critical buildings & equipment; our Matched “Adopt the Herd” for year-round horse care; and/or our LIVESTOCK FENCING NEEDS. There’s a need to do more than just “band-aid” long sections of dilapidated pasture fencing for our herd of wonderful horses that serves campers every day. Won’t you (as you are able) match some generous supporters in providing at least a small part of the remaining $12,300 needed to finish upgrading fences around our horse pastures & riding rings? Just write either “Maintenance Musts, Matched” , "Adopt the Herd, Matched" or “fencing for horses, pre-matched”]

This sharing is the latest in an ongoing, 13-year series of CedarS Bible Lesson "Mets" (Metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians. (Ask and look for "Possible Sunday School Topics "and "Possible Younger Class Lessons" in emails to follow.) These weekly offerings are intended to encourage further study and application of ideas in the lesson and to invigorate Sunday School participation by students and by the budding teachers on our staff. Originally sent JUST to my Sunday School students and to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study, application and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson "Mets "and Sunday School ideas are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way serve as a substitute for daily study of the lesson. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension and background as well as new angles (and angels) on the daily applicability of some of the ideas and passages being studied. The weekly Bible Lessons are copyrighted by the Christian Science Publishing Society and are printed in the Christian Science Quarterly and in a variety of useful formats as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms or online at eBibleLesson.com or myBibleLesson.com. The citations referenced (i.e.B-1 and S-28) from this week's Bible Lesson in the "Met" (Metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the Bible (B-1 thru B-26) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (S-1 thru S-32). The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one. We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of the ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor.]
