Thank you for another best summer yet!

Treasured GEMS summons you to Revel in “Reality City” and its ever-present blessings!
Insights from Cobbey Crisler, Ken Cooper & others for The Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson on

for September 27, 2020

GEM#1: Imagine seeing yourself and all mankind today as truly “under the control of supreme wisdom” in what we could call “Reality City,” the Holy City, with all its awesome, no-tears blessings!
Both Mary Baker Eddy and Cobbey Crisler shed new light on Jesus’ promise of “no tears” in the Holy City of Revelation 21:1-4 (Our Golden Text, along with the first and last citations in Science & Health, act as “book ends” for this week’s Bible Lesson on “Reality.”)
[Mary Baker Eddy writes in the first citation:] “The Revelator tells us of ‘a new heaven and new earth.’ Have you ever pictured this heaven and earth, inhabited by beings under the control of supreme wisdom?” SH p. 91:2

And, in the last citation this week, Mary Baker Eddy reminds us: “… remember Jesus’ words, ‘the kingdom of God is within you.’ This spiritual consciousness is therefore a present possibility.” p. 573:29

[Cobbey Crisler adds:] “Revelation 21 and 22. We’ve already been over it, haven’t we? We’ve seen it in previous Scripture but we find that it is the chosen Scriptural summary, the peak, the ultimate, and Jesus is associated with it. How much purer could Scripture be, coming from God through Jesus to John to us? And John saw that “new heaven and new earth” [Revelation 21:1]. …
John saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem. [defined as Divine Science & Health p. 592:18]
We know its origin, coming from God prepared as a bride. Finally, the bride prepared, adorned for her husband. [Verse 2] The tabernacle of God with men, [Revelation 21] Verse 3.
“Verse 4, there is a check-off list in this Holy City. There are no more tears, no more salty reminders of the sea in our bodies chemically. We’ve been told there’s “no more sea” in Verse 1. No more sea, no more tears, no more death, no sorrow, crying or pain, not in this consciousness. It’s the Holy City. That also means that it’s whole. There’s nothing that can fragment it. The tribes embrace it at the gates. The restored and regenerated tribes. The collective idea of you and me
working together as chords under the divine principle of a grand music that fills the universe and all eternity….” [W: Every Sunday evening SING with CedarS 365 Hymn Singers from all 50 states and from 18 countries us every Sunday night — more united than ever with past!]

GEM#2: “…as in heaven, so on earth”–see ALL you do as flowing with divinely perfect placement and timing – for God’s glory! (SH 17:2) An Answered Prayer (A.P.) History application of Eccl. 3:14 (B1) will work for you!
[Warren:] When CedarS Director of Operations, our daughter, Holly Huff (now Bruland), was on the Principia Upper School basketball team they made it into the district semi-final tournament. They were up against a highly favored Orchard Farm team that featured a very tall, dominate post player.

During the Principia School team prayer session before this game Holly shared one application idea from the Bible lesson that she had been trying to apply to her three-point shooting. She also shared another idea about Jesus’ knowing the thoughts of his opponents that she was hoping to demonstrate to a greater degree in her defensive work as well as her knowing when to pass and shoot in her work as a point and shooting guard.

The Spiritual Application idea that relates to shooting appears again in this week’s Bible Lesson. The citation is from Ecclesiastes 3:14 (B1): “whatsoever God doeth shall be forever…”

  • (It goes on…) “nothing can be put to it,”—as in an “air-ball” (or a short) shot would need to have more “put to it” to score —
  • “nor any thing taken from it”—as in a “brick” (or a long volleyball spike out of bounds) that would need to have something “taken from it” to make it count.

The key to shooting such a perfect, “nothing-but-net” shot in basketball (soccer …) is to make sure that it is “whatsoever God” is doing— to acknowledge it is being done through God and for His/Her glory.

The other Spiritual Application idea had to do with each player’s reflected right to have and to follow “all-knowing” Mind’s intuitions. This was “seeking first the kingdom of God” and among the many “added-unto” blessings that followed would be both seeing and making perfect passes as well as anticipating and intercepting your opponent’s passes. This application idea was based on a Bible story in the Lesson in which “Jesus knew their thoughts”. [This is from Matthew 9:4 where Jesus detected opposing elements in thought before he healed the paralyzed man.]

With just 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter of this District Basketball Tournament, Principia, as the “Cinderella” or “David team” against the “Goliath team,” was down by 12 points. Coach Norm Purdy called a time-out and reaffirmed those application ideas as they applied to having a strong finish for this game and the season – all of it for the glory of God.

When these inspired young women came back out on the court, it was like a different game. Principia players anticipated pass after pass from their opponents to make great steals, passes and lay-ups – as well as a flawless series of perfect three-point shots. As the clock clicked down to the final buzzer, “Prin” was still down by two points. The play that had been drawn-up wasn’t open. So, Holly had to “put up a prayer” from well beyond the three-point arc. Just as the buzzer went off it “swished” through the net – all for God’s glory—all as part of “whatsoever God” was doing. With that amazing 1-point win, Principia advanced to the district championship.

Thanks be to God for every time you feel a foretaste of “a new heaven and a new earth” in a divinely flowing rhythm with perfectly accurate anticipation, timing and execution of “whatsoever God is doing” through you—all for His/Her glory! (Rev. 21:1, 3, 4, SH 91, 573:29)

Ken Cooper’s GEMs #3a, b and c: Two of Ken’s YouTube offerings shine new light on both “The Three Hebrews” (Daniel 3:14-27, citation B9) and A Parent's Revelation” (Matthew 8:14, 15, citation B15)
[GEM#3a: Ken writes of the Reality revelations featured in the Golden Text and citation B21 (Rev. 21:1-4) as well as in the first and last citations of Science and Health (p. 91:1 and 573:29)] “John’s vision of a new heaven and earth not unique to him, for what he saw was the reality of all true being, man’s existence in the infinite kingdom of God, where God is supreme and man His instant reflection. This was also the constant vision of Jesus the Christ, who knew God as his perfect Father and man as His perfect son, in whom death, sorrow, crying and pain had no reality, no being. The Christ message of wholeness and deathlessness is through-out all time, ever visible to spiritual sense, and always here and now.

[For GEM#3b Ken wrote a poem about citation B9 from Daniel 3:14-27:] The narrative of the three Hebrew slaves is such a wonderful guide in these challenging times. The constant sound of fear, warnings, surrender to the god of materiality and utter subjection would appear to surround every moment and move, but this is all a false view of life. God is infinite ALL. John’s vision of a new heaven and earth was a vision of the ONLY heaven and earth. This too is all the Hebrews could see, and the Christ was present with them throughout their experience, the same Christ as is present now. There is no other reality. 2+2 is never more or less than 4, and we cannot be frightened by the suggestion it is 5. The Hebrews maintained their poise, their confidence in God, and the cacophony of matter could not touch them. Matter cannot and does not affect Spirit in any way. Their adherence to the one God brought an end to idol worship, and the re-establishment of God’s government. It had never left. In the poem, “The Three Hebrews,” we see that harmonious being is found and proved in the reality and ever-presence of God’s love.

[For GEM#3c Ken wrote a poem connecting the Lesson’s Revelation theme with citation B15, Matt. 8:14, 15:]
The book of Revelation is John’s sharing of the what Jesus saw, – the new heaven and earth so clearly the kingdom of heaven already within each of us. Like the three Hebrews, Peter’s wife’s mother experienced the love of God. The fever she had felt was completely eradicated, – it had no smell / memory, upon her, and she was able to go about her hospitality completely free. When we awake, the dream has no power, and we don’t need to spend time in recovery, for there was never anything wrong from which to recover. Listen to “A Parent's Revelation,” beautifully read by Sue, and hear how the true sense of Love enhances our experience, and brings God’s kingdom, heaven and earth, fully and practically into our consciousness.

GEM#4: Welcome Christ to stop being sick of a fever and sick of hearing about it 24/7!
Cobbey Crisler on citation B15, Matthew 8:14, 15 (+Hurricane season bonus”
Matt. 8:16-26 Exercise dominion over all that looks to be outside of you—even the elements!)
"(Verse 14. We come to the third healing [in Matthew's series of 10 of Jesus' proofs after the Sermon on the Mount of his Messiahship by his works, the healing of] Peter's mother-in-law. To have a mother-in-law, Peter had to be married. Peter had a wife. It's on the Sabbath day, too. But does Jesus consider women that important? Would he break the Sabbath for a woman? One may think that he might for a man. But would he do it for a woman? He does. Whatever business he had in Peter's house, he puts all aside and gives priority to the mother-in-law's needs. Despite the fact that it was the Sabbath. (Verse 15). He heals her of fever. [W: So much, for the supposed length and severity of the coronavirus as advertised these days—as well as for its being communicable… "and she arose and ministered unto them."].
([BONUS:] Verse 16). "Many come, when the even was come to be healed." Why the evening? Because then the Sabbath is over and they could all come without any fear of recriminations from the Jews.
[W: Added BONUS if you keep reading you can see in Jesus' fourth proof, the stilling of the storm, as in last week’s Bible Lesson— an encouraging application to today’s weather concerns.
“(Verse 26). “He says, “Why are ye fearful,” immediately seeing the thought, reading the thought, “you of little faith.” He rebukes the wind and the sea; “and there was a great calm.” That tells us something about what it must mean in Genesis 1 (Verse 26) when man “was given dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air.” Is it possible? Is Jesus telling man it is possible that he can exercise dominion over the elements? He has within him the kingdom of heaven, dominion that can be exercised over what looks (to be) outside of him…]

GEM#5: Click to Listen to or to read a great article that was inspired by Science and Health citation 20 on page 230. Milton Simon wrote it in the February 1949 Christian Science Journal with the title of "WITH DRUGS, OR WITHOUT." It clearly shows the importance of waking to see disease as only an illusion (or as a hypnotic suggestion) to cast it out. (It’s also featured on Disk 9 of Anthology of Classic Articles II.

GEM#6a: Like RBG, MBE was revolutionary thinker ahead of her time who liberated humanity!** When Mary Baker Eddy (MBE) wrote about “the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a skyward flight” (S29, Science and Health 261.27), researchers had not yet discovered and documented how "super-precocial" chicks of the "megapodes" came out of their eggs "completely independent…which hatch fully feathered, their eyes open and capable of flight." [according to W’s Class Instruction notes]

**GEM#6b: … as nebulae indicate the immensity of space” (Science and Health 509:18)
Here’s another example of how Mary Baker Eddy as she wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was ahead of her time in referring to this phenomenon that had not yet been discovered or explained scientifically. She could only do this by humbly, sincerely listening to her all-knowing, divine Mind.

A Christian Scientist friend of mine, Chuck Douglas, was an avid amateur astronomer and the Kansas City dad of CedarS staff friends, Charlie Douglas, Carol Douglas and Elaine Douglas Boudreaux). Chuck had the wisdom and the occasion to ask a professional astronomer what a woman author could have meant when she stated “even as nebulae indicate the immensity of space.” (509:18) The astronomer asked when this insightful observation was made and was amazed that Mary Baker Eddy wrote the first edition of Science & Health in 1875 and its last (418th) edition in 1906. He explained that it was not until 1929 when American astronomer, Edwin Hubble (who the Hubble Space Telescope is named after) was the first to describe the redshift phenomenon and tie it to an expanding universe and exploding stars (nebulae) as explained further at Iin 1990 when the Hubble Space telescope was launch into its orbit around the earth astronomers’ able to see more distant nebulae and to measure the speed at which their exploding light was simultaneously moving towards observers at light speed in a blueshift spectrum of light and away from us at light speed in a redshift spectrum of light. If you download the amazing pictures of the red and blue light from Helix Nebulae (in the upper right part of thus GEM’s online version), imagine this and countless other nebulae expanding in opposite directions at the speed of light of 186,282 miles per second—with no end in sight! Now, that "indicates immensity"!

GEM#7: Commit to oneness to avoid wavering! –Cobbey Crisler on James 3:17 (citation B17) after comments on James 1:17 plus James 1:6, 8
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect—free, large, full—gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning”—as in an eclipse.
… "We already know that James read Job because we read the verse (James 5:11) that mentions Job in it…
James 1:6 tells us how we should pray. You'll find when prayer is not prayer… "Let him ask in faith nothing wavering." Wavering suggests this to-and-fro state of mind… James 1:8 "A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways."…
James 3:17 "But the wisdom that is from above" all stems from the commitment to oneness."

GEM#8: Fully remember your Sabbath day completeness as in Genesis 1 and so correct each lie & liar mentally by a full recognition of what’s true about spiritual reality/identity, like Jesus did to lift up a woman bent-over for 18 years!
Cobbey Crisler on Luke 13:11-16 (& the sabbath day healing referred to in Luke 13:14, B17)

“Verses 10 through 17 are a healing found only in Luke.

(Verse 11) A woman with a spinal difficulty is in a synagogue Notice that Luke doesn’t say she has an infirmity. Luke, who is reputed to be a physician, doesn’t even diagnose it as an infirmity, but as a “spirit of an infirmity,” a concept, a spirit, a thought. “She was bowed together. She couldn’t lift up herself.”

Verse 12. Jesus comes and announces to womanhood something that could be applicable in many ways, not just this one time. “Woman, you are free from your infirmity. Verse 13. “She’s made straight and glorifies God.”

Verse 14. Incredible, “the ruler of the synagogue” in which this grand healing and correction of a human problem occurred “answered with indignation because Jesus had healed on the sabbath day…”.

Jesus’ explanation about the cause of disease is in Verse 16. No longer should there be any room in Christian thought that disease stems from … God’s will when Jesus attributes it to anything that would oppose God. Only what would oppose God would impose something on man that God Himself never created in His whole man. Is that a new theology? Satan and disease linked, and not God as the cause of loss, or pain, or sickness?

Because if it is new theology, he defines Satan as a liar as Jesus does in John (8:44). Satan has bound this woman with an infirmity that has her bent over, and has accomplished this for eighteen years. (Luke 13:16) And, “Satan is a liar and the father of it.” Satan’s work must be lies as well. If they are lies, they can be corrected mentally, by a full recognition of what is true. Notice that Satan does the binding. Jesus said (John 8:32) “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

It’s a contest between the truth and the lie about God and His theology, about man, about woman, about children and about disease. If Satan is a liar, he will never change his character. Our idea of God may have gone haywire, but God has not moved.”

GEM#9: Act like you know that prophesy is fulfilled now and that incurability is healed by changing your concept and believing! Cobbey Crisler on Mark 1:14-15 (B19) Four foundational points for Jesus

Mark 1, Verse 14. We have "John put in prison." He has already disappeared from the scene.

And, ‘‘Jesus comes into Galilee, and his work begins."
Verse 15. There are four foundational aspects to the gospel we need to study. Normally, an architect might refer to just one cornerstone in a building. But let's remember that all four of the corners have cornerstones. To that degree, let's ask ourselves if this is not a clue to understanding Mark. We have a foursquare gospel, and at each corner we have a particular point. If this is true, you should be able to compile the information that follows in the gospel under one of the following four headings.
(1) The announcement that, "the time is fulfilled." What does this mean? Prophecy. The time for the fulfillment of prophesy has arrived. So, everything is just brimming in the gospel of Mark with this great news. All of the expectation is over for the Messianic prophecy: We have a fulfillment now. ‘What could be more exciting than to be living in an era of fulfilled prophecy? Nothing, apparently, because this is what impels the gospel writers to pick up their pens….
Study Mark as if it were a textbook, filled with data that Jesus needed us to know in order to follow him. It is a handbook, so to speak, a textbook where we can find data that can be applied. Those four foundational points, under "the time is fulfilled," you will see over and over again, explicit or implicit, in the text.

(2) The second one, “the kingdom of God is at no distance.” It is right here. Even that idea is radical to Christendom today often because the kingdom of God, or often heaven, is considered to be so far away from any of us now. It is out of reach, and we’re not really behaving ourselves sufficiently to get there. It takes Palomar’s 200 inch reflecting telescope to even get a glimpse of it. But we find the founder of Christianity saying, ''Not so." His theology is based on the fact that "the kingdom of God is at hand."

Do we act like it is? We moan and we groan most of the time. We wouldn't if our state of mind was the “kingdom-of-God-is-at-hand" and the “prophecies-are-fulfilled." But those are only two of the cornerstones.

(3) The third one is “Repent!" That means to change your concept. Now, we’re going very deeply to the roots of what is required of us to get anywhere spiritually. The problem is mental or he never would have stated it in this way.

It would be cruelly misleading if he laid down as one of the four important aspects of his theology the fact that we had to change our concepts of things. The implication is that every human ill, physical, moral, mental, all can be changed mentally. Otherwise, repenting wouldn’t make any. Changing one's concept wouldn't make any difference.

This might be where maybe we temporarily get off the train leading to Jesus' theology. We may say to ourselves, if our bodies are riddled with cancer, of what avail would it be to change our concept? How would that affect the body? The implication is that this is the panacea. Repent ye. Change your concept about things.

Do you realize what kind of a religion that suggests? It's very revolutionary in this respect: nothing is incurable from the point of view of Jesus ' theology. If you can change your concept, then everything is curable. That's some good news of victory that has yet to hit the human race with any impact like Mark, the hammer.

(4) The fourth and final cornerstone is to "believe the gospel," That "believe" is not just to hold an opinion that waves in the breeze. This is a conviction and a trust in the pronouncements of the gospel of the kingdom of God, and that "kingdom of God is at hand."

With that structure of the gospel in mind, we can do this kind of work together. As a matter of fact, the reward comes from doing this work individually and meeting each other that way. It affects the world's climate by doing this kind of deep research. In your own individual study, try those four columns.

The time is fulfilled,

The kingdom of God is at hand,

Repent ye,

Believe the gospel,

and see how you can outline the whole gospel in that way.

We may just discover that Peter becomes one of the most polished orators of all time. Yet he is regarded as a rather simplistic fisherman who probably stumbled in Greek and was more at home in his Aramaic.”

“What Mark Recorded,” by B. Cobbey Crisler**

GEM#10: Appreciate and demonstrate the reality of “signs following”— even and especially in today’s toxic mental and physical environment!
Cobbey Crisler on Mark 16:17, 18 (B20):
Verse 17. The gospel of Mark ends with deeds, not words. "These signs shall follow them that believe.” There's one of our foundational points again (Mark 1:15). Those who believe will have signs that follow. Otherwise we’re not believers. We can say all we want, "We're believers in Jesus Christ," but we're not unless signs are following. That is Jesus' own definition of a believer.

“All of these signs are fulfilled in the Book of Acts except the sign regarding poison. This was accomplished in an early Christian tradition by Barsebus. He was forced to drink poison and recovered without any problem. So, we have "the new tongues."

Verse 18. The ''taking up of serpents, the drinking any deadly thing,” even a poisonous chemical! Look at that in the environment today. "And be healed." It’s a sign that follows those that believe.

Why are we leaving our environment untouched by the Holy Spirit?

Why aren't we seeing the Spirit there, and therefore, liberty?”
