Introduction

This week’s Lesson shows us the perfect love and control that God holds over the universe, including man. When we see the universe from a spiritual standpoint, we see God’s law of harmony everywhere and governing each plant, animal, and person together for good.

The Earth and atmosphere are totally spiritual and under the control of divine Love. This atmosphere doesn’t contain anything harmful. It is the harmony of Mind expressed. [a favorite CedarS acronym for h.o.M.e.] Mind expressing itself in perfect ideas – each of us as God’s magnificent creation! Everything that has breath praising God! Let’s explore how to demonstrate this law of harmony and experience more of the freedom and joy of God’s great love.

Golden Text

Starting with God as the only Creator is a great standpoint. Because God is perfect and spiritual, we can reason spiritually that the image and likeness of God must be harmonious, spiritual, pure, and under the control of divine Mind. God has, indeed, made the heaven and earth and everything that is in it – not as a material, faulty creation – but as a spiritual, perfect revelation! Each of us, as the spiritual image and likeness of God, is revealing the nature of the Divine through magnificent and beautiful qualities.

We get to be in awe of the magnitude and wisdom of God! When standing outside on a starry night, we may feel that awe of the infinite nature of God and the beauty of the universe. Praising God is just that – being in awe and wonder of God. Being aware of all of God’s blessings and goodness – in the people, plants, trees. Seeing each one as a precious, eternal idea of God. That is certainly something praiseworthy!

Section 1 … Learn from one of the great teachers the Earth

Who are our teachers? This passage from Job (B2) tells us that the birds, animals, fish – the earth – are our teachers! What do they teach us? About the wonder and beauty of perfect creation. Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods or sat by a still, clear lake and gained a beautiful glimpse of God? Gained a clearer, fresher sense of what you needed to do about a problem? Through the symmetry and order of creation we learn something about Mind’s creation and our place in it. We glimpse that we are at one with creation, all dwelling and woven together in ceaseless harmony. The Earth can give us such clear glimpses of creation and really put things into perspective for us. “Suns and planets teach grand lessons.” (S2, 240:8)

When we are struggling with a problem, sometimes it’s helpful to go outside, take a walk, listen to the birds, observe all the little creatures running around. Let them be our teachers. We gain a deep sense of peace; we feel our interconnectedness with all things and this puts things back in their proper perspective.

“Reasoning from cause to effect in the Science of Mind, we begin with Mind, which must be understood through the idea which expresses it…” (S3, 467:29) Reasoning from our starting point, Mind, enables us to do just that! We put God back in the center of the universe, and leave things to God’s wisdom and control. What a weight of responsibility is lifted when we see that God is at the center of the universe, always will be, and we just get to yield to God’s loving control.

Section 2 … The spiritual man of God’s creating is a blessing!

The spiritual man that God creates is a blessing! That includes all of us! Each one of us exists to be a blessing, and not a curse, to the universe. “Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal.” (S8, 547:25) Through this inspired view we see a creation that is totally immortal, spiritual and perfect – even if we only glimpse that spiritually. It is not arriving at perfection someday after many phases of evolution. Spirit has only made – could only make – a creation that is beautiful, whole, and complete.

The counterfeit view is that man is a material mortal, degrading a planet, fighting to own areas of matter, and fearful over limited resources. What a corporeal and false view! “Darkness and doubt encompass thought, so long as it bases creation on materiality.” (S7, 551:24-26)

What is man’s place in creation? Humanity has wondered about that question for centuries. Mary Baker Eddy gives us this response:

“I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.”

(The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, p. 165)

This shows a spiritual, scientific creation that exists in harmony and that exists to bless. Reasoning with God, Spirit, as our basis gives us wonderful effects. Thankfully, Christian Science gives us the tools we need to understand the universe and our place in it! It shows we are not entangled in a web of mystery, but we are governed by a divine Science with a beautiful origin and Source.

“When we learn the way in Christian Science and recognize man's spiritual being, we shall behold and understand God's creation, — all the glories of earth and heaven and man.” (S10, 264:28)

Section 3 … The understanding of a spiritual creation has practical, healing results!

The neat thing is that the spiritual origin and nature of creation can be proved on a daily basis in our everyday experiences. We don’t have to take it as faith only, or as a nice theory. This spiritual view of creation can be lived and proved through physical healing, overcoming financial limitations, and demonstrating more of God’s goodness and love in our relationships.

Jesus proved the spiritual nature of creation by healing. Throughout the Bible we have wonderful examples of physical healing and feeding many people when there seemed to be limited resources. He also proved the power of divine Love to overcome fear, doubt, and shame. In the healing of the man with leprosy, he proved the unreality of fear, the unreality of matter, the allness of Spirit, and God’s love for man. He wasn’t afraid of the man or disease. He proved that God has supreme control of the universe and man, so we don’t have to worry or fear.

“The body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love…” (S16, 14:16) because that is the natural outcome of our relationship with God. And when we become “conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual…” (S16, 14:12), we gain a spiritual sense of reality that is in perfect harmony with God. We lose all fear and that harmonious state of thought is made manifest on the body. When we allow our thought to yield to the loving control of divine Mind, healing is the result. Jesus showed that God’s man is always the beloved, worthy, child of God, who has permanent residency in God’s kingdom. God’s man is never an “outcast” – never cast out from God’s creation. God’s man has an integral and valuable place in the kingdom of God.

We can pray for ourselves, families, and the world from the standpoint that: “The scientific fact that man and the universe are evolved from Spirit, and so are spiritual….” (S13, 69:2) is a FIXED fact. It doesn’t change and never will. What a gift to have such a sure foundation to pray from and to demonstrate our victory over error of every kind.

Section 4 … God’s spiritual power is enough to still the wind and waves in our experience

What a great reminder to start our prayers with “Be not afraid…” (S17, 410:30). We want to pray – to calm the wind and waves metaphorically and literally – from a standpoint of poise, grace, understanding, and dominion. The sense of dominion Jesus showed was to bring harmony and healing peace to these turbulent situations. It was never a sense of domination or arrogance. He showed the “superiority of spiritual over physical power.” (S18, 131:10) He harmonized the situation through an understanding of the supremely good nature of God. This understanding pacified any situation that needed to be harmonized. He knew that God never ordained another power to have control over God’s creation. Jesus was always in a “ready” state of mind – ready to meet and overcome adversity with an empowering sense of God’s grace.

Mary Baker Eddy writes about it this way:

“To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science.”

(The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, p. 160)

So, whatever storms come our way, we can meet and overcome them with that same conviction that Jesus had. We have the dominion, poise and grace to overcome and pacify discordant situations with the all-embracing power of infinite Love. This power isn’t a brute force, but a divine force that pacifies the winds and waves of mortal mind with the calm and healing influence of divine Mind.

When a situation doesn’t yield readily, Mary Baker Eddy tells us we need purer love and stronger faith. What a great model! Instead of more human will, material force, or stubborn resistance, we actually need purer love and to become lighter and freer in our thinking.

It wasn’t really the wind and waves that needed calming. It was a manifestation of mortal mind that needed to yield to the “the immutable law of God, good.” (S19, 134:26) Jesus was “Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses…” (S21, 306:25). He knew with unwavering certainty the presence of God’s law of harmony, and those physical senses did indeed “give up their false testimony.” (S20, 192:21)

Section 5 … God’s love is able to give us needed solutions for environmental issues

This section shows us that harmonious solutions for environmental issues can come from God because “…nature and God are one and the natural order of heaven comes down to earth.” (S24, 118:25) Christian Science gives us the tools we need to address these issues metaphysically and practically. It shows us that the real atmosphere we live in is the atmosphere of Spirit, (S27, 191:32) where there can never be anything harmful.

This “atmosphere of intelligence” (S27, 192:1) is our real status and where we live, move and have our being as children of God. This doesn’t mean we don’t have to take care of the things we have been given by expressing qualities of stewardship and care for the Earth and its beautiful resources (B19, Zeph. 3:1-5).

In addition to practical steps we take, we want to see that our thoughts are contributing to a mental atmosphere of healing with a spirit of gratitude, unselfishness, willingness, and appreciation for others. By living the spirit of Christliness, we can express qualities such as collaboration, unity, harmony, humility, and love. The mortal atmosphere of limitation and lack can be rejected and replaced by this true, spiritual atmosphere of the infinite possibilities that come from an infinite Mind.

We can ask ourselves on a regular basis, am I being influenced by the divine Mind or the human mind? (S26, 82:31-2) Gaining greater “self-knowledge, humility, and love” (the 3 stages of growth we must go through; see Miscellaneous Writings, p.355) will pave the way for solutions. We stand on the spiritual rock of changeless good because “Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.” (S25, 96:24)

Section 6 … Rejoice in the beauty and grandeur of God’s creation!

We conclude this lesson with beautiful Biblical imagery of newness, freshness, joy – the Earth is glad and the trees rejoice! (B24, Ps. 96:11-12) The Bible Lesson shows how we can demonstrate God’s law of immutable harmony for the Earth and all of its inhabitants. As the spiritual image and likeness of God, we can trust the spiritual law of safety and harmony as we travel on water, in the air, and on land this summer. We can look at all the things we love and see them spiritually – as beautiful, spiritual ideas of God’s creating. “In proportion as this is done, man and the universe will be found harmonious and eternal.” (S30, 209:24)

Rejoice in the beauty, harmony and grandeur of God’s magnificent creation this week! Take a walk or enjoy the outdoors in your favorite way. You may find a new, spiritual lesson waiting for you!

Summer Update (as of June 15):
As we prayed with the motives of loving our neighbor, being law-abiding, acting with wisdom, and offering a camping experience that is consistent with our Christian Science foundation, we were led to cancel our June programs onsite and to make several additional adjustments to our summer schedule and operations. At this time, we are still awaiting what we'd consider acceptable guidelines from the county related to overnight summer camps, still actively preparing for July programs, and still listening for God’s guidance each step of the way. Here are decisions we have been led to make thus far:

CedarS Camps Schedule for Summer 2020:

  • Session 1 (June 7-20): Cancelled
  • Session 2 (June 21- July 4): Cancelled
  • Session 3 (July 5 – July 17): Currently Proceeding (one day shorter)
  • Session 4 (July 19 – July 31): Currently Proceeding (one day shorter)
  • Family Camp (August 2-8): Currently Proceeding

We will be in touch with additional specifics about 3rd and 4th Session programs as soon as we know more. Thank you for your patience and support of CedarS as plans for this summer continue to unfold.

In order to accomodate as many families as possible, we plan to limit future enrollees to just one rather than both sessions. Some programs have a waiting list, but that can change hourly as fluid plans get readjusted. We’re happy to answer any questions at 636-394-6162 or office@cedarscamps.org.

With great love for each of you,
Holly, Warren, Gay, Kim, and the CedarS Team

FYI: Enrollment has been capped at about 110 for CedarS fun, Online Camper Programming (for June 15-20)! We are offering this option of an introductory online CedarS experience to support our mission: “to give each camper an appreciation of spiritual sense and an abundance of wholesome, joyous activity.” We are developing programs for elementary, middle, and high schoolers. These will be part-day virtual programs, led by eager CedarS counselors, that include daily Bible Lesson study with a cabin cohort, camp songs, friendship-building activities, and opportunities for off-screen adventures.

Continuing to Sing: We’ll continue to sing hymns with you each Sunday this summer, either from St. Louis or from Lebanon! Click here for a Zoom link and numbers for today's Hymn Sing at 7pm Central Time.

We are working to demonstrate that "Of two things fate cannot rob us, namely, of choosing the best [summer yet and best fall yet!], and of helping others thus to choose." (Miscellany, 165:2)
