Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

God the Only Cause and Creator” – November 28-December 4, 2016

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – What marvelous works of God have your students observed? Read together Hymn 45 from the Christian Science Hymnal as a guide for the sharing (below).

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What key words in the Responsive Reading speak of God’s marvelous acts as Cause and Creator and ongoing caretaker? Examples:

  • By the word of the Lord were the heavens made
  • He gathereth the waters of the sea together
  • He spake and it was done
  • Which made heaven and earth
  • Executeth judgment for the oppressed…
  • The Lord preserveth the strangers…

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What are the absolute statements in citations B1 and B2?

  • All things were made by him
  • …it was very good

How do these absolute facts and their relevancy to spiritual cause have impact on human progress? All ideas come from God and are received by humankind. Why? Citation S5 tells us of the primal cause. What does “primal” mean? First, original, primary with no secondary. So, how many creators are there? How many causes are there? (S4) Who benefits from this truth? You and all humankind, all ideas. Read together Hymn 246 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Ask students, “What is man” that God is mindful of him? Why should/does this matter to you? Citation S6 states:

  • The Lord created thee
  • Fear not
  • Ye are my witnesses
  • I have chosen you
  • This people have I formed for myself

Read together citation S8. For the whole answer to the question ‘what is man’, please see Science & Health 475:5. Are you blessed of God, your Cause and Creator? Please share any evidence of God in your life. Remember you are His image and likeness, perfect, permanent.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What role did Jesus Christ play in showing to us the divine power and what it has given to us? (B7) How did Jesus link his presence to the Old Testament prophecy that foretold his coming? (B10) Is this scripture fulfilled in your ears today? (S12, S13, and S15) Do you know this prophecy was given over 700 years before Christ Jesus was born? Read together Hymn 243 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – How do you know that Jesus was appointed and anointed by God? See Matthew 3:13-17. For what purpose? (B14) What is the link from Jesus Christ to us? (S17) Note the words “chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages”. This chain of scientific being is a direct counterfact to the counterfeit belief in a DNA chain carrying all heredity for each individual. DNA should be held as Does Not Apply to you and all ideas. Why? Citation S19 tells us what?

  • there are no antagonistic powers nor laws… governing man through perpetual warfare

What are you to do? (S20)

  • Maintain the facts of Christian Science…
  • Hold your ground… You will win

Read together Hymn 146 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below). That’s you – “God’s great heir.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Since God created you pure, perfect, permanent – look to this section for ideas to counter beliefs that food can help or injure, add weight or diminish weight, sustain you or eliminate you. Please share insights from reading this section – in its entirety.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What are the prayers of petition in citation B23?

  • Cause me to hear…
  • Cause me to know the way…

What is the prayer of affirmation in citation B24?

  • I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever

Please review truths you learned from this lesson. Why? (S27) “Truth is always the victor.”

Read the promise to you in citation S28: “…human beliefs will be attaining diviner conceptions, and the immortal and perfect model of God’s creation will finally be seen as the only true conception of being.”

Read together Hymn 349 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

Hymn 45:

Dear God, how glorious is Thy name Through all the earth and sea and sky. The wondrous heavens, Thy handiwork, The moon and stars hast Thou ordained.

Such tender beauty, Lord, from Thee Is shed abroad o’er all the earth; In bird, in sunbeam, light and flower Thy grace and goodness may be seen.

For this Thy gift unspeakable, The beauty of Love’s holiness, We lift our hearts in grateful song And would be always praising Thee.

Hymn 246:

O Thou who spreadest the heaven like a tent, He who depends on Thee, ne’er is forspent, Still for his might on Thee he ever counteth, On wings of eagles he, unwearied, mounteth.

REFRAIN: Have ye not heard, have ye not known The everlasting God Creator is of heaven and earth, And He alone is Lord.

So shall the glory of God be revealed, All flesh shall see it and all shall be healed; In word and deed declare Him and adore Him. God’s will is done, and all is plain before Him.

Hymn 243:

O sweet and tender as the dawn, With mighty power to heal and bless, Is God’s dear gift to all His own: The happy grace of gentleness.

How quickly burdens fall away, How hearts grow light, rejoice, are glad, When Love with touch of gentleness Uplifts the sinning and the sad.

This gentle grace of Love divine Is sweet as breath of opening flower. Self-love and harshness disappear Beneath its tender, healing power.

Hymn 146:

In God I find a precious gift That knows no fear, no feud, That glows so still, serene and pure: The gift of gratitude.

It brightens all the paths of earth, Reflecting Truth and right, For gratitude doth steadfastly Abide in heavenly light.

With confidence it hails each task, With courage undismayed, For naught against Infinity Can ever be arrayed.

In seamless gratitude I weave A silent, healing prayer, With shining threads of ceaseless joy; For man is God’s great heir.

Hymn 349:

Thy will, almighty Father, Thine, And Thine alone be ever done; For Thou art Life and Truth and Love, The great, eternal, Holy One.

Reflecting truly all Thou art And all the sunshine of Thy love, No life we know from Thee apart, But peace on earth from heaven above.

We walk in freedom and in peace Thy holy purpose to fulfill, And Thou dost ever point the path For loving servants of Thy will.
