P.S.S.T.  Golden Text (GT)/Isaiah 61:10,11: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God;.. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.”

What gives you joy? What are examples found in the GT?

  • As the earth bringeth forth her bud
  • Garden causeth… to spring forth
  • The Lord God causes righteousness and praise to spring forth before all nations

If you are feeling anxious about challenges and fighting in the world right now, perhaps Hymn 291 from the Christian Science Hymnal may provide some comfort and a basis for prayer and acknowledgment that Only God is in charge.

(Hymn words supplied here.)

Hymns 291, 563, 564

Quiet, Lord, my stubborn heart, / Make me gentle, pure, and mild, / Upright, simple, free from art; / Make me as a little child, / From distrust and envy free, / Pleased with all that pleases Thee.

What You shall today provide / Let me as a child receive, / What tomorrow may betide / Calmly to Your wisdom leave; / It’s enough that You will care, / Why should I the burden bear?

As a little child relies / On a care beyond its own, / Being neither strong nor wise, / Will not take a step alone, / Let me thus with You abide, / As my Mother, Friend, and Guide.

Responsive Reading (RR)/Psalm 86:8,10; Psalm 33:6,8,9,11; Psalm 104:1,5,14,16,17,24,25,28,31

Why is the statement just made so? What does the RR tell us?

  • There is none like unto thee, O Lord
  • Thou art great, and doest wondrous things
  • Thou art God alone
  • Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him
  • Who laid the foundations of the earth
  • That it should not be removed forever
  • Thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – Since God is All-in-all, how can there be anyone else in charge? Read together the scientific definition of “Creator” in citation S2/Science & Health 583:20:

“CREATOR.  Spirit; Mind; intelligence; the animating divine Principle of all that is real and good; self-existent Life, Truth, and Love; that which is perfect and eternal; the opposite of matter and evil, which have no Principle; God, who made all that was made and could not create an atom or an element the opposite of Himself.”

See also a scientific statement on which to base your prayers for the world, in citation B4/Psalm 5:4, “For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness; neither shall evil dwell with thee.”

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is God good?
  • Is God, Spirit, the creator of all things?
  • Is God immortal?
  • Is that which God, Spirit, creates immortal?

What does Science & Health tell us is the one question to be considered (in citation S5/170:22)?  [Answer: “spiritual causation”]

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – Again, what do you have to be joyful about?

  • The Lord is God
  • He hath made us
  • We are His people
  • He feeds his flock like a shepherd
  • He gently leads

How do you magnify the Lord, the presence of the Lord in/with your life?

This might be a good time for the students to pause and pray Hymn 304 from the Christian Science Hymnal. (Hymn words supplied here.)

Hymns 304-309, 573-576

Shepherd, show me how to go / O’er the hillside steep, / How to gather, how to sow,— / How to feed Thy sheep; / I will listen for Thy voice, / Lest my footsteps stray; / I will follow and rejoice / All the rugged way.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will, / Wound the callous breast, / Make self-righteousness be still, / Break earth’s stupid rest. / Strangers on a barren shore, / Lab’ring long and lone, / We would enter by the door, / And Thou know’st Thine own;

So, when day grows dark and cold, / Tear or triumph harms, / Lead Thy lambkins to the fold, / Take them in Thine arms; / Feed the hungry, heal the heart, / Till the morning’s beam; / White as wool, ere they depart, / Shepherd, wash them clean.

This type of praying can help thought “give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal” as stated in citation S10/260:7:

“The conceptions of mortal, erring thought must give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal. Through many generations human beliefs will be attaining diviner conceptions, and the immortal and perfect model of God’s creation will finally be seen as the only true conception of being.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – What is the blessing for you and yours and all mankind as stated in citation B12/Psalm 67:1,2?

What is the healing recorded in citation B14/Luke 9:38-43?

This would also be a good opportunity for students to share a recent healing of their own.

A foundational statement of how Christian Science heals as Jesus did is stated in citation S18/417:10-16.

Read also from Science & Health 476:32-5:

“Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – No one should be left out of your prayers, as St. Paul said to Timothy in citation B17/I Timothy 2:1,2.

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

See also Mary Baker Eddy’s agreement with this Pauline statement in Prose Works: Christian Science versus Pantheism 14:14-10:

“Pray that the divine presence may still guide and bless our chief magistrate, those associated with his executive trust, and our national judiciary; give to our congress wisdom, and uphold our nation with the right arm of His righteousness.

“In your peaceful homes remember our brave soldiers, whether in camp or in battle.1 Oh, may their love of country, and their faithful service thereof, be unto them life-preservers! May the divine Love succor and protect them, as at Manila, where brave men, led by the dauntless Dewey, and shielded by the power that saved them, sailed victoriously through the jaws of death and blotted out the Spanish squadron.

“Great occasion have we to rejoice that our nation, which fed her starving foe, — already murdering her peaceful seamen and destroying millions of her money, — will be as formidable in war as she has been compassionate in peace.

“May our Father-Mother God, who in times past hath spread for us a table in the wilderness and ‘in the midst of our enemies,’ establish us in the most holy faith, plant our feet firmly on Truth, the rock of Christ, the ‘substance of things hoped for’ — and fill us with the life and understanding of God, and good will towards men.”

(Footnote 1: “This refers to the war between United States and Spain for the liberty of Cuba.”)

Mary Baker Eddy always had the care for all mankind uppermost in her thought, as should we all. Prayer is a powerful tool and is always a path to joy in our lives.

Read together citation S22/1:6, “Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God’s gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – One of the big discussions today is about climate change. Look to this section for scriptural statements about our role as stewards of the earth and its inhabitants. Even though this message is from various books in the Bible, the message is clear:

  • Job 12:7-10
  • Numbers 35:33
  • Deuteronomy 11:11,12
  • Jeremiah 17:7,8

Mary Baker Eddy concurs with this message in citation S24/240:1-6:

“Nature voices natural, spiritual law and divine Love, but human belief misinterprets nature. Arctic regions, sunny tropics, giant hills, winged winds, mighty billows, verdant vales, festive flowers, and glorious heavens, — all point to Mind, the spiritual intelligence they reflect.”

Why? Because “Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence” (cit. S25/262:30).

Citation S28/125:21-24 is a specific aid to praying for Farmers and crops affected by climate change. Read what it states,

“The seasons will come and go with changes of time and tide, cold and heat, latitude and longitude. The agriculturist will find that these changes cannot affect his crops.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – We began this Lesson with joy and we see in the closing section how we shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace (cit. B26/Isaiah 55:12).

We can agree with this scripture statement because “The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind” (cit. S30/379:6).

Read together Hymn 425 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words supplied here):

Hymn 425

O weary pilgrim, lift your head, / For joy cometh in the morning; / For God in His own Word hath said / That joy cometh in the morning.

REFRAIN  Joy cometh in the morning, / Joy cometh in the morning; / Weeping may endure for a night, / But joy cometh in the morning.

Our God shall wipe all tears away, / For joy cometh in the morning; / Sorrow and sighing flee away, / For joy cometh in the morning.

REFRAIN Joy cometh in the morning, / Joy cometh in the morning; / Weeping may endure for a night, / But joy cometh in the morning.

Peace and joy be upon you all.
