P.S.S.T.  Golden Text (GT)/Psalm 9:1: “I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.”

According to the Christian calendar, this week begins Advent, the four weeks before Christmas. Advent gives us time to re-view the birth of Jesus Christ – the “reason for the season,” if you will. What do your students know about the Advent season? The Golden Text points to the word “praise”. Ask students to share any thoughts about why one should praise the life of Christ Jesus, and how the life of Christ Jesus points to His – and our – only creator. Ask student to write down and share any marvelous works that exist because God created it.

Responsive Reading (RR)/[God’s awesome works in Ps 8:1,3-6,9; Ps 96:1,2,6.]

What are hints of God’s marvelous works recorded in the Responsive Reading?

  • Consider the heavens
  • Man
  • Angels
  • Salvation
  • Majesty of the universe

Are you also in awe of God’s immense and amazing creation?

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – [Put your hand in God’s  & ask for guidance, leadership…]

Answer the questions posed in citation B1/Isaiah 40:5,21,25,26,28:

  • Have you not known?
  • Have you not heard?
  • Has it not been told you from the beginning?
  • Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
  • “To whom then will you liken me, or shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.

The Lord reigns; God is supreme; Jesus points the way.

As we look to the Advent season, we are anticipating a focus on the life of Christ Jesus and his words and works. We also are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power because that is why God created us, why we were and are created.

Are we fulfilling our role as creation? Have you put your hand in the hand of God and asked for guidance, for leadership, for followership?

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – [Be willing to prepare for the way of the Lord simply]

What does the word “manifold” mean in citation B4/Psalm 104:24?

Do you know that God is not separate from His creation?

Do you know that God fills you with all wisdom?

What did the wisdom of God direct Samuel to do in the Scripture story in this section (cit. B6/I Sam.16:1-12)? What do your students know of Samuel before he arrived at this important task?

  • His mother gave him to God at an early age.
  • He heard the voice of God when quite young.

These acts were his own advent story, preparing him to acknowledge and obey God. Therefore, he saw – in advance of others – the shepherd boy David, who would unite all Israel. How did Samuel do this?

Read together citation S7 in Science & Health (p.84:3-7).

Read also citation S10/455:20-25.

Are you capable in some small way of being fit to help prepare for the way of the Lord, for following the life of Christ Jesus? Do not think this is a task too difficult for you. Willingness is all that is needed for this preparation.

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – [Never discount the smallest act as foreshadowing unseen good]

Imagine the life of King Saul without a David in his life. Never discount the smallest act as preparatory for an impact you do not yet see. This willingness is a part of the advent of that which is to come into your life.

Music is one of the calming, inspiring, and guiding elements that impacts our lives. Ask students to share a piece of music that is especially inspirational and meaningful to them. Do students know of the music that was inspirational to David? Look to the Psalms for a body of such work. Did David know the impact of that music on individuals not yet born, you and me, and those yet to come? Students might share a Psalm, or portion of one, that is inspiring to them.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – [Value heartfelt singing (& CedarS  Hymn Sing on 12-4 at 7pm  & Worldwide Zoom Christmas SingS on 12-18 at both 2 & 7pm CT! Watch for 12-4 & 12-18 emails with links.]
Singing is often [and ideally] inspirational. What do you suppose David sang in his heart as he went out to meet Goliath in citation B11/I Samuel 17:4-50?
[And which of the after-Passover/Seder-dinner, ceremonial psalms, did Jesus sing with his disciples before they walked to Gethsemane for him to face his known betrayal to crucifixion ?]  This is a hint as to how we might prepare when we are faced with a formidable foe or challenge.

Music has a calming influence, an arousing influence, and even a silencing-of-fear influence. Read together citation S20/225:8.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – [God is still with our ancestors, as well as “God is with us” — one & all.]
Do your students know of the direct link between David and Christ Jesus? Think about the direct line of generations from Abraham to Isaac to Jacob (Israel), to Ruth via Boaz, to Jesse, to David, to Joseph of the house of David, to Christ Jesus, to you as a Christian – a follower of Christ Jesus.

Each of those individuals was a part of the Advent season preparing for seeing “God with us” as referenced by Christ Jesus. Each of them was anointed with the power of God to do good, healing all who were oppressed. See citation B13/Acts 10:38. God was/is with each of them as God is with you and me. [God identified His/Her self to Moses by saying “I AM the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham…” Exodus 3:6, (GW) God’s Word]

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – [Rejoice in Christ’s life of ever-turning us to our mutual Creator]
Make a joyful noise that comes from a heart full of joy in anticipation of celebrating the life of Christ Jesus and his ever-turning us to his Father-Mother, our mutual Creator. It is not too early to think of Christmas music that speaks to your students’ hearts. Ask them to share a favorite Christmas carol, like Hymns 222, 164, 11, 23, among others.

Happy anticipation of the coming Christmas season!
