Man – August 31-September 6, 2015
prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. pegasus6524@gmail.com

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Let us consider man, as shown in this lesson in his true depict as God’s image, as a way of healing the apparent inhumanity rampant around the globe. Remember that issues come to the surface to be healed and you can heal them. See what Mary Baker Eddy says in Miscellany 147: 28-30: “From the interior of Africa to the utmost parts of the earth, the sick and the heavenly homesick or hungry hearts are calling on me for help, and I am helping them.”

What does man in God’s image look like to you,… sound like,… act like…? Then consider that anything in opposition to that image must be false, untrue, therefore unreal.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading (RR)– What does it mean that man has “dominion” in the Responsive Reading? Could it possibly mean he has dominion over every errant thought creeping into thinking and therefore we have dominion to cast out all those creeping images, subtle or aggressive? How does one do that?

See a prayer treatment in the RR, verses 1, 17, and 37. How long do we have such dominion? Verse 13.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What did God see as the result of God’s creation? (B1 verse 31). Where does this excellence and dominion reign? (B2) What does “all the earth” mean?

Read together Hymn 329 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below). Where is “earth’s remotest border”? How do we reach them when travel to them might be restricted? How can you bless every idea that God has made? By the way, can there exist anything not made by God?

Read together the prayer treatment in citation S3 as a clear statement and definition of man.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – If you are confused as to who man is, then do what is called for in citation B5: “Ask me of things to come concerning my sons….” What else are we called upon to do in citation B8? “…behold thy face in righteousness…” Now answer these queries:

  • Is man harmonious?
  • Is man eternal?
  • Is man immortal?
  • Is man God’s image?
  • Is man the reflection of God?
  • Does “man” mean all mankind?
  • Is man kind?

How can you discern the truth about man – through the physical senses, or through spiritual sense? What is spiritual sense? See Science & Health 209:31-32. How can you gain more of this spiritual sense which is called for to uplift humanity? (S7) The result is peace, for ourselves and all mankind.

Read together Hymn 236 in the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below). This is another prayer treatment.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Can we be assured that wickedness, even in high places, cannot, will not, prevail? Read the story of Absalom in citations B9 and B10. Read also citation B11 for an absolute statement assuring us that evil will not, cannot, prevail. See also citation S13. When we part with error, what appears? (S14) Why is this so? Because the Christ ideal must have been in place before error could appear. Doesn’t the Christ ideal therefore preclude error?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – How could one define blindness? Literally associated with the eyes and figuratively associated with the thought. What frees one from blindness of either type? (B15)

What influences you? Are you agreeing with blind beliefs and so missing the mark of man created in God’s image? Can you at once turn and by using the Christ (See S&H 583:10.) annul that which would curse man? Can you overrule error as Christ Jesus did? (S17, 31-4) Will you? What destroys errors based on mortal sense? (S19)

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What does “forever” mean? Where is forever? When is forever? See Galatians 5:7, “who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?” Can you or any man ever be separated from God? See Romans 8:35, 37-39:

“35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

“37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

“38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

“39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is Paul’s prayer treatment that is a blessed assurance. Now take an issue of inhumanity in the world today and write out a prayer treatment based on the truths you have discerned during this lesson.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Read together citation B21. This Aaronic blessing is a great memorization opportunity.

Read also citation S25. What is the great truth stated there? So do you have dominion over every lie that creepeth? (S26)

Do you see that you are dealing with the laws of the universe to halt error, lies, evil, inhumanity in its tracks?

Read together Hymn 258 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hymn 329:
The heavens declare the glory Of Him who made all things;
Each day repeats the story, Each night its tribute brings.
To earth’s remotest border His mighty power is known;
In beauty, grandeur, order, His handiwork is shown.
His law man’s pathway brightens, His judgments all are pure,
His Word the thought enlightens, And ever shall endure.
To heed His testimony, And Wisdom’s way to hold,
Is sweeter far than honey, And better far than gold.
In daily contemplation Of Thee, I take delight;
O, let my meditation Lay hold of Thee aright.
O, aid me in suppression Of idle thought or word;
O, keep me from transgression, Redeemer, strength, and Lord.
Hymn 236:
O peace of the world, O hope in each breast,
O Bethlehem star that ages have blest,
A day of fresh promise breaks over the land,
Gaunt warfare is doomed, and God’s kingdom at hand!
From cannon and sword shape tillers of soil,
No more let dire hate man’s spirit despoil,
Let Truth be proclaimed, let God’s love be retold,
That men of good will may their brethren uphold.
As stars in their courses never contend,
As blossoms their hues in harmony blend,
As bird voices mingle in joyful refrain,
So God’s loving children in concord remain.
Our God is one Mind, the Mind we adore;
Ineffable joy His love doth outpour;
Let nations be one in a union of love,
God’s bountiful peace, all earth’s treasures above.
Hymn 258:
Oft to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide
In the strife of Truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side.
A great cause, God’s new Messiah, Shows to each the bloom or blight,
So can choice be made by all men Twixt the darkness and the light.
New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient creeds uncouth;
They must upward still and onward Who would keep abreast of Truth,
And serenely down the future See the thought of men incline
To the side of perfect justice And to God’s supreme design.
Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet ’tis Truth alone is strong;
Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong,
Yet that scaffold sways the future, And behind the dim unknown
Standeth God within the shadow Keeping watch above His own.
