P.S.S.T. Golden Text –It might be helpful to define some terms from this week’s Bible Lesson subject:

Necromancy – a practice of magic (divination) involving communication with the deceased with the intent to foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge

Mesmerism – the name given by German doctor Franz Mesmer in the 18th Century to what he believed to be an invisible natural force possessed by all living things, including humans, animals, and vegetables. Also known as animal magnetism.

Hypnotism – a state of human consciousness involving an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion

Whereas these definitions may appear to be from some times past (ancient), how do they relate to today’s (modern) beliefs and practices? Let’s see what this Lesson will tell us about both.

Sometimes one will hear Christian Scientists refer to a chapter in Science and Health on Animal Magnetism. But if one looks more closely, one would discover an important word in that chapter’s title: “Animal Magnetism Unmasked”. That word unmasked is crucial. Rather than a deeper study of animal magnetism, it is the unmasking of this false belief that is most helpful and advantageous. Read aloud together pages 100 and 101 in S&H by Mary Baker Eddy. Read also what MBE says on page 102:

“Animal magnetism has no scientific foundation, for God governs all that is real, harmonious, and eternal, and His power is neither animal nor human. Its basis being a belief and this belief animal, in Science animal magnetism, mesmerism, or hypnotism is a mere negation, possessing neither intelligence, power, nor reality, and in sense it is an unreal concept of the so-called mortal mind.”

So according to the Golden Text, where do we look for an understanding of what our life is and how our lives work? “…with Christ in God”

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What can we trust that God is revealing to us about our life?

  • No persecution
  • His face is looking on us and shining (beaming with a smile of great love)
  • With goodness laid up for us (stored up and preserved for all time)
  • Hidden from pride and strife
  • He is marvelously kind to us

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is the prayer of petition in Citation B1?

What is the prayer of affirmation in Citation B2?

What is the conclusion drawn in Citation B2, verses 10 and 11? [This is a great memory opportunity.]

“There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he hall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”

How does Christian Science define “angels”? (Citation S1)

How does Christian Science define “animal magnetism”? (Citation S4)

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – How does the story of Moses in Citation B6 showcase what has been discussed so far? Angels, protection, result of trusting God, preservation, unmasking the belief of life as separate from God, safety.

Citation S10 is another great memory opportunity:

“At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good. Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil.”

This story of Moses came about because the new King of Egypt did not know or remember the story of Joseph and how Joseph saved Egypt from the famine.

Why is it important for us to read these ancient stories in the Scriptures? See

II Timothy 3:16:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – How is the story of Jonathan and David in Citation B11 related to the truth in Citation S12? Read together S15, and then Psalm 23. Notice how this Psalm assures God’s protection and guidance both in front of you and behind you – “he leadeth me” and “surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life”. Now ask students to make the connection of God’s protection and guidance in both ancient and modern times. Is Psalm 23 just an old prayer, or does it have relevance for today as well?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Read together Acts 10:34, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons”. How does the truth in that statement relate to the story in Citations B14 and B15?

There is another great memory opportunity in Citation B16: “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psalms 121:8). Once again, how does this truth relate to ancient and modern times? Do students have an example of any experience where God led them in their going about their daily business?

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – As a Christian Scientist, what have you enlisted to do? See Citation S26. How would you define “all”? Is there anything outside of all? [or “allness”?]
Fill in the blank: “In my life there is all ____________”.
Now state the corollary: “therefore there can be no ____________.”

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Explore together the meaning of the Scripture in Proverbs 28:12 (Citation B19). What do you suppose the word “hidden” means in this passage? Does it mean “forever permanently destroyed”? Or, does it mean “temporarily obscured”?

See why Christian Science is so important to the world in the Church Manual 17:8,

“At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 12, 1879, on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted, — To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”

Even though mesmerism or hypnotism attempted, or attempts, to destroy the truths Jesus and the prophets taught and demonstrated, they cannot do so. Why?

See SH 186:19-22:

“This falsehood should strip evil of all pretensions. The only power of evil is to destroy itself. It can never destroy one iota of good. Every attempt of evil to destroy good is a failure, and only aids in peremptorily punishing the evil-doer.”

P.S.S.T. Section 7 – In you there is a hiding place where the truth of being is revealed. What is the result on the world because you are in it?

See SH 516:9:

“God fashions all things, after His own likeness. Life is reflected in existence, Truth in truthfulness, God in goodness, which impart their own peace and permanence. Love, redolent with unselfishness, bathes all in beauty and light. The grass beneath our feet silently exclaims, ‘The meek shall inherit the earth.’ The modest arbutus sends her sweet breath to heaven. The great rock gives shadow and shelter. The sunlight glints from the church-dome, glances into the prison-cell, glides into the sick-chamber, brightens the flower, beautifies the landscape, blesses the earth. Man, made in His likeness, possesses and reflects God’s dominion over all the earth. Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God.”

Read together Hymn 293 from the Christian Science Hymnal:

“Rock of Ages, Truth divine, Be Thy strength forever mine; Let me rest secure on Thee, Safe above life’s raging sea. Rock of Ages, Truth divine, Be Thy strength forever mine.

“Rock of Truth, our fortress strong, Thou our refuge from all wrong, When from mortal sense I flee, Let me hide myself in Thee. Rock of Ages, Truth divine, Be Thy strength forever mine.

“Christ, the Truth, foundation sure, On this rock we are secure; Peace is there our life to fill, Cure is there for every ill. Rock of Ages, Truth divine, Be Thy strength forever mine.”

P.S.S.T. Section 8 – Let’s conclude this Lesson with Hymn 123 from the Christian Science Hymnal.

“How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word. What more can He say than to you He hath said, To you who to God for your refuge have fled:

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand;

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.”

This hymn summarizes your protection from any ancient or modern necromancy, alias mesmerism and hypnotism. Denounce them all from a firm foundation. Like the ancient prophets, you also by siding with God, win.

Read together SH 84:3-18:

“The ancient prophets gained their foresight from a spiritual, incorporeal standpoint, not by foreshadowing evil and mistaking fact for fiction, —predicting the future from a groundwork of corporeality and human belief. When sufficiently advanced in Science to be in harmony with the truth of being, men become seers and prophets involuntarily, controlled not by demons, spirits, or demigods, but by the one Spirit. It is the prerogative of the ever-present, divine Mind, and of thought which is in rapport with this Mind, to know the past, the present, and the future.

“Acquaintance with the Science of being enables us to commune more largely with the divine Mind, to foresee and foretell events which concern the universal welfare, to be divinely inspired, — yea, to reach the range of fetterless Mind.”
