Doctrine of Atonement –April 13-19, 2015

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS, pegasus6524@gmail.com

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Let’s agree up front that man (you) was not born a sinner, nor born to be a sinner, so atonement might be considered best as at-one-ment with God, not estrangement from God. Since God sent his son not to condemn the world but to save the world, then from what are we to be saved? Perhaps mis-concepts of who we are, false concepts of who we are, erroneous concepts of who we are.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – This is your hour, now is your time. There is no better time than the present to demonstrate your oneness with your Father-Mother, your creator. How are you glorified by God? Does God love you? Is there anything that you and God can’t accomplish together? Consider that you are the evidence of the presence of God in the world. How are you exhibiting your one-ness with God? Take the seven prominent synonyms Mary Baker Eddy gives for God and answer: How am I exhibiting Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, Mind, Principle?

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is the covenant or contract God made with man, and makes with you today in citation B5?

  • I will put my laws into their hearts
  • Their sins I will remember no more
  • Hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering
  • Consider one another… unto love and to good works
  • You have need of patience
  • Receive the promise

How can you take this covenant, these promises, and use or apply them to the needs of mankind?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – To whom does God reveal God’s self? To Christian Scientists or Christians only? What is the gospel or good news of the kingdom that Jesus taught? (B8)

  • The time is fulfilled (that is now)
  • The kingdom of God is at hand
  • Repent (awaken, wake up to)
  • Believe in the good news

From what did Jesus redeem man? (S8)

What is the doctrine of Christian Science? (S10) What is your role in this doctrine? (S13) What is your personal result? (S13) Not separation but oneness.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Jesus, as evidence of the Christ, is ever with us. Make a list of the shepherding qualities in citation B11. What works of your Father can you do today that demonstrates God with us (you and all)? Why is it important to study the scriptures, especially the life and works of Christ Jesus? Ask students to write out one sentence as to what men (each of them) can expect to gain from a study of the scriptures?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Are you a man of Israel or one of the children of Israel? See Science & Health 583:5 for this definition. If you are Christ’s offspring then God has also raised you up. (B14) What was the first in the line of Christian duties stated by Mrs. Eddy in citation S21? What is our aid to remove the adamant of error? (S24) What is a solvent? What remains in citation S25? The indissoluble spiritual link. You are linked with God through the Christ. Therefore you are established forever as “…in the divine likeness, inseparable from [your] creator.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – The grace of God directs how we are to live with and for each other. (B17)

  • Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts
  • Live soberly, righteously, and godly
  • Be a “peculiar people”
  • Zealous of all good works

What is your part in the at-one-ment? (S27)

  • Advancing spiritually
  • Striving to enter
  • Turns away from material sense
  • Looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit
  • Be in earnest from the start
  • Gain a little each day in the right direction
  • Finish your course with joy

Read together the words from Hymn 29 in the Christian Science Hymnal. We are united with our sisters and brothers across the land, we are all at-one-with-God.

Breaking through the clouds of darkness, Black with error, doubt, and fear;

Lighting up each somber shadow, With a radiance soft and clear;

Filling every heart with gladness, That its holy power feels,

Comes the Christian Science gospel, Sin it kills and grief it heals.

Christ-like in its benedictions, Godlike in its strength sublime;

Conquering every subtle error, With a meekness all divine,

It has gone across the ocean, It is known in every land,

And our sisters and our brothers Are united in one band.
