[PSST: Suit up for the undefeated “God Squad” in right thinking & acting!]
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson
“Mortals and Immortals” – May 11-17, 2015
prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS pegasus6524@gmail.com
P.S.S.T. Golden Text – With what does righteousness, or right thinking and right acting, clothe you?
P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What did Paul write to Timothy, or what was his counsel to Timothy, in this letter to him? What was and is the good news in verse 10? Death abolished and life and immortality brought to light.
P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is that you desire God to do in your life? How do you wish to be clothed? That is, what qualities do you wish to express and by which others may identify you? How does God identify you? (Science & Health portion of this section)
- Perfect child, created in God’s image
- Wise
- Able to change or be re-clothed
- Growing in Christian character
- Turns away from lies and false beliefs
- Good
- Spiritual
P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Read the story of Jonah aloud together. This is also a good opportunity to role play or act out the story. What impact does Christian Science have on individual lives? S11. What is it that you are urged to earnestly seek? S12.
P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Can you ever be separated from God? Can anyone else be separated from God? B6. What did God do for Jonah? B7. What does gravitating (listening, accepting, being willing) to God do for Jonah? B7. What will it do for you? S14.
P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What was the result of Jonah’s listening and accepting God’s call? B8. What is error? An opposite statement of the truth. It is never real, never true, never powerful. What is the result of listening to God? S18, S20. Read together Hymn 64 from the Christian Science Hymnal (see below).
P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Why did the people desire to touch Jesus, to be in his presence? B9. Was it Jesus’ actual clothes people wanted to touch or was it his spiritual nature, his kindness, his compassion, his goodness they felt and desired to experience? Basking in the glow of Jesus’ goodness was not sufficient. What are we also called upon to do? S22. What clothes are we called upon to don?
- Can you heal, will you?
- Can you leave error behind, will you?
- Are you willing to live, can you?
- Are you willing to put on Christ, can you?
- Do you have two lives or one only?
- Are you indestructible?
- Are you eternal?
P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Are you saved? From what are you safe? What does it mean to be saved? “…man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal” S26. You can’t help but be immortal. S29. What clothes you? Read together Hymn 19 and Hymn 292 below and from the Christian Science Hymnal. You are clothed in righteousness –right thinking and right acting – informed by God who knows who you are.
Hymn 64:
From sense to Soul my pathway lies before me, From mist and shadow into Truth’s clear day;
The dawn of all things real is breaking o’er me, My heart is singing: I have found the way.
I reach Mind’s open door, and at its portal I know that where I stand is holy ground;
I feel the calm and joy of things immortal, The loveliness of Love is all around.
The way leads upward and its goal draws nearer, Thought soars enraptured, fetterless and free;
The vision infinite to me grows clearer, I touch the fringes of eternity.
Hymn 19:
Behold, they stand in robes of white Who out of tribulation came,
With songs of joy upon their heads, They praise His holy name.
O these are they whose hearts are pure, And free from sin or any stain,
They stand before the throne of light, Their joy shall never wane.
They worship Him in spirit new, God’s messengers of Love and Life,
They do His will, they speak His Word, That stills all pain and strife.
They show an ever clearer light, Like stars they shall forever shine;
They witness truly to His Word, And God saith, These are Mine.
Hymn 292:
Put on the whole armor of pure consecration, The breastplate of righteousness valiantly gird,
With shield of true faith, and the helmet of salvation—The sword of the Spirit is God’s mighty Word!
For His is the greatness, the power and the glory, The victory His, when for succor we call;
His majesty shines in creation’s wondrous story, And He is exalted as head over all!
