PSST: Seek God, Know God, be directed by God.
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

for December 30, 2019-January 5, 2020

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. • 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT) – Read together the Glossary definition of God in Science and Health 587:5 (Citation S2). This is the God you seek. Set your heart and soul and sight on this.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading (RR) – God is thinking you, knowing you! What does the RR state about God knowing you?

  • You understand and know me (God)
  • Exercising lovingkindness, judgment, righteousness
  • Thinking thoughts of you:
  • Peace
  • Not evil
  • Giving you an expected end (now and forever)
  • Ye shall be my people (always and in all ways)

What promises are these! Glory be to God, peace to man.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Ask students to write down one thing for which they thank God (Citation B1).

You know God, because Citation B4 states: “I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God:”

What does it mean to you that God knows you? Your very existence is the result of God’s knowing. What is another name for God in Citation S3? “The everlasting I AM”

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Read aloud Citation B7. For more information about Asa in I Kings 15:8-24. Asa reigned from 913-873 BC. How does the story of the life of Asa align with the 1st Commandment found in Exodus 20:3? Read what Mary Baker Eddy (MBE) tells us of the 1st Commandment in Citation S11. What does she say is the result when humanity adheres to the 1st Commandment? Citation S11, SH 340:20-29.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – How did Jesus respond when his disciples asked him to teach them to pray? Citation B10.

See what MBE says of this prayer in Citation S12.

See also the spiritual interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer in S&H 16:24-15. One could ponder the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father”, when considering any issues facing him. Why are these two words so powerful?

Citation S17: “…your Father will open the way.”

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What is the powerful statement in Citation B12? “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”

See also Citation S18, SH 12:31-1: “In divine Science, where prayers are mental, all may avail themselves of God as ‘a very present help in trouble.’”

What counsel does MBE give us in Miscellany, Chapter X “Admonition and Counsel”, with the statement “What Our Leader Says”:

“Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness. Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited.

“The self-seeking pride of the evil thinker injures him when he would harm others. Goodness involuntarily resists evil. The evil thinker is the proud talker and doer. The right thinker abides under the shadow of the Almighty. His thoughts can only reflect peace, good will towards men, health, and holiness.” (My. 210:1–17)

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – God is always found for us, because God is everpresent and so are we.

What is the covenant or contract God has made with us? Citation B16, Jeremiah 31:33: “I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

Read together Hymn 82 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words printed here):

God is working His purpose out As year succeeds to year, God is working His purpose out And the time is drawing near; Nearer and nearer draws the time, The time that shall surely be, When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea.

What can we do to work God's work, To prosper and increase The brotherhood of all mankind, The reign of the Prince of Peace? What can we do to hasten the time, The time that shall surely be, When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea?

March we forth in the strength of God With the banner of Christ unfurled, That the light of the glorious Gospel of truth May shine throughout the world; Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, To set their captives free, That the earth may be filled with the glory of God As the waters cover the sea.

(Hymn 82:1–3)

Citation S29 (SH 254:10-12) states: “When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.”
