P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Ask students what they think this biblical passage means. That is, who are your enemies? To what does the word “enemies” refer? Does this imply a physical person, or false suggestion that should be overcome or shut down that clouds the picture of your true nature? What does it mean to denounce one’s enemies? Again, be mindful that it does not refer to a person.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – The opening of the Responsive Reading is a prayer of petition in consonance with overcoming the enemies referred to in the Golden Text. In Verse 8 what is the request made of God? How would you define righteousness? It is often suggested as right thinking or right acting.
How does that definition align with the request to denounce or tread down one’s enemies?

Read together Verse 11. What is the assurance in that verse? What also is assured in II Timothy 1:7? “…God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – When dealing with false mental suggestions, where is your power? S1. Is there a power that bombards one with false mental suggestions? Remember the discussion from the Golden Text that there is no power out there to do you harm. The teachings of Christian Science often refer to such false mental suggestions as animal magnetism. But what is animal magnetism? See citation S4: “As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind.” What is the key word in that sentence? Term. That implies that animal magnetism is not a noun—that is, not a person, place, or thing, but a term for something appearing to be real but isn’t. Please also note the use of the word “error”. Error is a mis-statement which when reversed reveals the truth. Read together citation S5. What are key take-away statements in this passage?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Once again, citation B5 reaffirms there is “…neither adversary nor evil occurrent.” Occurrent means happening. So if evil or adversary or adversity is not happening, then we are required to put it out from the only place it could be – in our thinking. How do we do that? S11.

See also Science & Health 201:17-18. This implies love for self and for all other ideas.

Read together citation S12. Which do you prefer: condemning or fighting with another person, or seeking unity with others as brothers and sisters? What is the result stated in citation S12 about such unity?

Read together Psalm 133:1, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Citation B10 states clearly where the battle of treading down our enemies occurs. Read it together.

What is Jesus’ counsel for us in citation B12? Why? Because we are all the children of God – brothers and sisters. No one is left out!

What is the great truth in citation S16?

Citation S17 refers to the Golden Rule. What is this Rule? Ask students if they know that every major religion has the Golden Rule as a foundation of its teachings?

Read together Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 22:37-40:

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

“This is the first and great commandment.

“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

“On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Read the Bible story in citation B14. What did Jesus cast out of the man? Was it an illness or mental unbalance, OR was it a legion of false beliefs? How did he do that? See S&H 476:32-5:

“Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Can we do as Jesus did, that is, behold in Science the perfect man? What in this Lesson has provided us the assurance and the tools to do so? B16.

Read together Hymn 179 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

Do you realize the power of the new commandment, “Love one another”? John 13:34 and citation S29.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Declare what you are subject to. False suggestion, enemies to be trodden down, or the only power there is, “God the Only Cause and Creator” and “God the Preserver of Man”. Yes, this is a preview of the next two Lesson Sermons. Regardless of the name the false belief parades under, we can agree with Paul in what he said in Romans 8:35,37-39.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

“Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Be persuaded, you mighty conqueror!

Hymn 179

Love one another,—word of revelation; Love frees from error’s thrall,—Love is liberation. Love’s way the Master trod; He that loves shall walk with God. Love is the royal way.

Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness; Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness. Love heals our every ill, All the law does love fulfill. Love is our answered prayer.

Love now is dawning over every nation; Showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation, Love bids all discord cease. Conquering hate, enthroning peace, Love, Love alone is power.
