P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Help students define the word “reconcile”

From dictionary.com:
To bring into agreement or harmony, make compatible or consistent

  • To win over to friendliness

How do these definitions apply to the Golden Text (GT)?

What did Jesus Christ teach about harmony, or our compatibility with God? Might compatible also mean one-ness or being at-one with?

Remember the lesson of Pentecost. See Acts 2:1-11. What was the result when the people were of one mind with each other?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What is the benefit statement in Ephesians 2:19 as the result of removing barriers, making peace, being in harmony with each other?

Are you part of God’s household? What about others? Is there anyone left out of the kingdom?

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Here is a great memory opportunity in Citation B1 from Micah: “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” How many gods are there? How does the Micah-verse just quoted translate into our daily life? What guidance did Jesus provide in Citation B2?

How did Mary Baker Eddy (MBE) explain atonement? See Citation S2.

Christian Science links man to God. What are the benefits of such at-one-ment? Citation S3.

Read together Citation S5 for a further explanation of at-one-ment.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Have you ever seen Citation B6 put into practice? Do students know anything about the process of reconciliation in South Africa following the end of apartheid, or in Rwanda after the period of genocide? Have they had any personal experience of reconciliation with a friend or family member? How did Jesus’ teachings differ from the teachings of Moses as stated in Citation S8?

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Read together the expanded verses from Citation B9, Romans 8:35,37-39. This is a counter-statement to separation.

How can this statement help in your daily living of at-one-ment?

What is the statement of the doctrine of Christian Science in Citation S16?

Ask students to share with each other their thoughts about these statements:

  • One God
  • Supremacy of Spirit which annuls the claims of matter
  • Indissoluble spiritual link
  • Man in the divine likeness
  • Man inseparable from his Creator

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Read together Hymn 592 from the gray Christian Science Hymnal (printed here):

Hymn 592

REFRAIN 1

We are walking in the light of God,
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking in the light of God,
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking, we are walking, ooh
We are walking in the light of God.
We are walking, we are walking, ooh
We are walking in the light of God.

We are all God's children, expressions of one Mind,
Living in the radiance of Spirit all divine.
Every heart and nation is answering the call
To a true salvation knowing God is All-in-all.

REFRAIN 2

We are praying in the light of God,
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying in the light of God,
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying, we are praying, ooh
We are praying in the light of God.
We are praying, we are praying, ooh
We are praying in the light of God.

As we turn our faces, up to the light of Life,
Harmony replaces all pain and fear and strife.
See the heavenly harvest so bountifully poured,
As we raise our voices being all of one accord!

REFRAIN 3

We are singing in the light of God,
We are singing in the light of God.
We are singing in the light of God,
We are singing in the light of God.
We are walking, we are praying, ooh
We are singing in the light of God.
We are walking, we are praying, ooh
We are singing in the light of God.

What words in this hymn align with the truth of at-one-ment? Does Christian Science end the life of Christ Jesus with his crucifixion? Why or why not?

How important is the resurrection? What does it prove? Life eternal and Citation S26: “Love must triumph over hate.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – How was Paul showing that leaders of the church and disciples were not exclusively men? Citations B19 and B20.

How was Paul preaching inclusivity of all races, ethnicities, and genders in B20?

Rather than personality, how did Mary Baker Eddy state on what was the church of Jesus Christ built? Citation S28, “…the divine Principle, Love.”

Read together Citation S32 as a fitting way to conclude this lesson:

Glory be to God

Revelation and demonstration of life in God

Elevated us to possible at-one-ment

United spiritual man (us) and the divine Principle, Love

Read together Hymn 264 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed here)

Hymn 264

Onward, Christian soldiers,

Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, his banners go.

REFRAIN

Onward, Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Like a mighty army,
Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one body we,
One in hope and doctrine,
One in charity.

REFRAIN

Crowns and thrones may perish,
Kingdoms rise and wane,
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain;
Gates of hell can never
'Gainst that Church prevail;
We have Christ's own promise,
And that cannot fail.

REFRAIN

Onward, then, ye people,
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph-song;
Glory, laud and honor
Unto Christ the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

REFRAIN

Onward, then, ye people”!!
