P.S.S.T. Golden Text – What are some of the qualities of God as Father, as Mother, that provide comfort to you and all ideas? See Isaiah 44:1 and Isaiah 66:13.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What qualities have you inherited from your Father-Mother? What comforting statements are written in the Responsive Reading?

  • …the Lord’s portion is his people
  • He led him about, he instructed him
  • He kept him as the apple of his eye
  • As an eagle stirreth…fluttereth…spreadeth…her wings…taketh…beareth
  • The Lord alone did lead him
  • Hold up my goings…my footsteps slip not
  • Hide me under the shadow of thy wings

Read together Hymn 30 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below). What is the title of this poem/hymn? See also a powerful statement in I John 4:19.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Can you trust in God’s love, in God as Love? In Christian Science, Love is often paired with Principle. If Principle is law, then love must be the law also. What do you think it means that the law of God, Principle, is Love? Does Love guide you? How about every idea, does Love guide them also? How is this Law a direct counterfact when evil, hatred, appears in your experience? What role does reflection play in your adhering to this Principle, Love? Read together John 13:34,35 and Romans 12:10-16 (to 1st .).

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What was Hannah’s petition in the Bible story in this section? How was it met? How did Hannah follow through on her promise? How was love expressed to Hannah? Not just one child but three sons and two daughters. Is God, Love, Principle limited in its bestowals and its creation? Who is this creation? You are included, so you can expect abundant blessings from Love, Principle. What does Mary Baker Eddy tell us about a mother’s love in citations S9 and S10?

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Read together the story of Deborah in citations B10 and B11. What was Deborah’s role? She was a judge. What does this tell us of the role of women’s equality in “Bible times”? Memorize citation B12. What is the essence of that passage? No fear in love and God is Love. Therefore, fear not when depending on God. Read together citation S13. What is the promise given to you and all ideas from Love in citation S15? Why is this so? Citation S16, line 21: “Love is the liberator.”

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – How were the daughters of Zelophehad treated fairly in citations B13 and B14? What does this story tell us of the equal role and value and status of women in “Bible times”? Why is this so? Because Love is equal in its bestowals. See what Mary Baker Eddy says in Science & Health 13:2. How does Christian Science empower women as equal with men? (S18 and S19) Here the term “man” is generic and includes all humankind. Notice the use of the word “citizens” in citation S19, line 24. No one is excluded. Read together Hymn 258 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below). What do you make of the challenge to humanity in this hymn?

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What are the promises in citation B19?

  • Tribulations can lead to patience
  • Patience can lead to experience
  • Experience can lead to hope
  • Hope can lead to love
  • Love of God is shed to our hearts by the Holy Ghost

What are the fruits of the Spirit?

Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.

All of these are the fulfilling of the law, the Principle of Love. They are ever available to you and all. Read together citation S23.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What is the promise in citation B22? How about in citation B24, line 18? From where does your comfort come? Read together Hymn 154 in the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

You have been given Christian Science, the Comforter. What is at the heart of Christian Science and its practice? Love! S26 and S27. Who is left out or excluded from Love, from love? No one.

This is the promise of the Comforter, the fulfilling of the law, the Principle, Love.

Hymn 30

Brood o’er us with Thy shelt’ring wing, ’Neath which our spirits blend

Like brother birds, that soar and sing, And on the same branch bend.

The arrow that doth wound the dove Darts not from those who watch and love.

If thou the bending reed wouldst break By thought or word unkind,

Pray that his spirit you partake, Who loved and healed mankind:

Seek holy thoughts and heavenly strain, That make men one in love remain.

Learn, too, that wisdom’s rod is given For faith to kiss, and know;

That greetings glorious from high heaven, Whence joys supernal flow,

Come from that Love, divinely near, Which chastens pride and earth-born fear,

Through God, who gave that word of might Which swelled creation’s lay:

“Let there be light, and there was light.” What chased the clouds away?

’Twas Love whose finger traced aloud A bow of promise on the cloud.

Thou to whose power our hope we give, Free us from human strife.

Fed by Thy love divine we live, For Love alone is Life;

And life most sweet, as heart to heart Speaks kindly when we meet and part.

Hymn 258

Oft to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide,

In the strife of Truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side.

A great cause, God’s new Messiah, Shows to each the bloom or blight,

So can choice be made by all men Twixt the darkness and the light.

New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient creeds uncouth;

They must upward still and onward Who would keep abreast of Truth,

And serenely down the future See the thought of men incline

To the side of perfect justice And to God’s supreme design.

Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet ’tis Truth alone is strong;

Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong,

Yet that scaffold sways the future, And behind the dim unknown

Standeth God within the shadow Keeping watch above His own.

Hymn 154

In Thee, O Spirit true and tender, I find my life as God’s own child;

Within Thy light of glorious splendor I lose the earth-clouds drear and wild.

Within Thy love is safe abiding From every thought that giveth fear;

Within Thy truth a perfect chiding, Should I forget that Thou art near.

In Thee I have no pain or sorrow, No anxious thought, no load of care.

Thou art the same today, tomorrow; Thy love and truth are everywhere.
