Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Love” — January 27-February 2, 2020

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. • 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT)

What does the God of love and peace look like, feel like, in your experience? Is this God of love and peace fleeting or permanent? How long can you count on God to be a God of love and peace? Has love and peace abandoned you; can they be absent from your experience? Read together from Science & Health 249:6-10.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading (RR)

What are the key points in Paul’s writings as recorded in the Responsive Reading as it relates to God with us, love and peace with us?

P.S.S.T. Section 1

Ask students to define everlasting, comforteth, lovingkindness, tenderness. Mary Baker Eddy states in Citation S1, “God is Love.” What other descriptors for this passage are included in this section of the lesson?

  • Incorporeal
  • The universal cause
  • The only creator
  • No other self-existence
  • All inclusive
  • Supports the struggling heart
  • Father-Mother

Read together Hymn 174 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

P.S.S.T. Section 2

What is the key takeaway in the scripture part of this section? Citation B6, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God;”

Read Citation S6. To Love, all is love. To Life, there is no death. Truth is the law.

What are the questions each of us must ask ourselves as stated in Citation S8? How shall we regard our neighbor? How shall we regard ourselves? What is to reign in us (be given priority in our thought and actions)? Citation S9.

  • Unselfishness
  • Goodness
  • Mercy
  • Justice
  • Health
  • Holiness
  • Love

What is the result when we do so? “…sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.”

P.S.S.T. Section 3

Read the scripture story in Citation B10. What was the practice of the Golden Rule in this scripture story? Look to the S&H portion of this section and read every statement that includes Love. Please note we are referencing Love with the capital “L”.

What is the result stated in Citation S13 (lines 31-4) when the God of love and peace reigns, especially as you discern Christian Science?

P.S.S.T. Section 4

Read together Micah 4:2-5.

Read also about the Peaceable Kingdom in Isaiah 11:6,7,9.

The command is to begin with each of us individually and let it spread across the world, the universe.

Read together Hymn 521 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

What are some qualities of peace and love you wish to see practiced in your world? You may not control others but you can control your thoughts and actions. As you practice peace and love, that is, let the God of peace and love reign in your thoughts and actions, you can agree to practice Citation S19, “Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept. Patience must ‘have her perfect work.’”

P.S.S.T. Section 5

Citation B16 states, “…perfect love casteth out fear.” This admonition tells us we need never fear when Love is directing and guiding us. Are you, as a Christian Scientist, “aflame with divine Love” (S23)?

Remember, to Love, all is love! Where can you find the words “God is Love” in every Christian Science church? Why do you think those words are so prominently displayed?

P.S.S.T. Section 6

Is there anything more powerful than love? Read Citation S30, “No power can withstand divine Love.”

Read together Hymn 179 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

From Section 1: Hymn 174 (& 523)

Like as a mother, God comforteth His children;

Comfort is calm, that bids all tumult cease;

Comfort is hope and courage for endeavor,

Comfort is love, whose home abides in peace.

Love is true solace and giveth joy for sorrow,—

O, in that light, all earthly loss is gain;

Joy must endure, Love's giving is forever;

Life is of God, whose radiance cannot wane.

O holy presence, that stills all our demanding,

O love of God, that needs but to be known!

Heaven is at hand, when thy pure touch persuades us,

Comfort of God, that seeks and finds His own.

From Section 4: Hymn 521

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.

With God our creator, we are family.

Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now.

With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow:

To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally!

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

From Section 6: Hymn 179

Love one another,-word of revelation;

Love frees from error's thrall,-Love is liberation.

Love's way the Master trod;

He that loves shall walk with God.

Love is the royal way.

Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness;

Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness.

Love heals our every ill,

All the law does love fulfill.

Love is our answered prayer.

Love now is dawning over every nation;

Showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation,

Love bids all discord cease.

Conquering hate, enthroning peace,

Love, Love alone is power.
