[PSST: Let Light cast out ancient and modern darkness!]
P
ossible Sunday School Topics by Merrill Boudreaux, CS, for the
Christian Science Bible Lesson: “Ancient and Modern Necromancy,
alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced”

for May 26-June 1, 2014

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text – If light is always present, never diminished, would darkness exist?  Could there be darkness?  If darkness is the absence of light, but light was never absent, could there be darkness?

P.S.S.T.  Responsive Reading – What do you think sitting in darkness means?  Is it possible for a person to sit in darkness with light all around?  Sometimes an individual may have dark thoughts or even be referred to as a “gloomygus.”  Wouldn’t the illumination of thought chase the darkness away?  See Psalm 42:11.  See also Numbers 6:24-26.

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – What ideas can you conclude from citation B2?
• God is infinite, therefore light is infinite.
• God is omnipresent, therefore light is omnipresent.
• God fills all space, therefore light fills all space.
• God is all, light is all, darkness is nought.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – Is serving other gods the result of light (enlightened understanding) or darkness (error or misguided thinking)?
Do you ever need to be afraid of the dark?  No, not especially if you turn on the light.  Read aloud together Hymn 444 from the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement.  Evil thoughts only exist in belief, never in fact.  Give up evil thoughts and you give up darkness and suffering (S8).

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – What weapons of truth are available to us to cast down dark imaginings?  Daily Lesson-Sermon, Daily Prayer, Lord’s Prayer, the Bible, Science and Health, articles and testimonies in the Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel, Wednesday evening testimony meetings.
Wouldn’t it be great to take the class to a Christian Science Reading Room and explore what is there to support casting out darkness.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – How is it possible to have eyes and see not, or to have ears and hear not?  Human concepts of communication are often faulty.  Real communication is always from God to His idea, man.  What are ways of human communication?  Texting, cell phones, email, person-to-person.  What about communication from God?  Has anyone in the class felt God’s presence, or just knew that a certain thing was right to do?  We sometimes call this intuition.  Look up the definition of intuition.  Do you have this ability?  What clouds or darkens intuition?  Isn’t it when we let erroneous thinking come in?  BUT this week’s lesson is clear that ancient or modern darkness cannot abide in a thought aligned with God, Truth, light.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – Read citation B18 – how Jesus declared himself to be a light of the world.  Was he referring to himself as the man Jesus, or to himself as the Christ?  The Christ, or God with us, never sleeps, is never absent, is ever-available.  Jesus said the Father would send a comforter (B19).  What is this comforter and has it come to us, to all mankind?

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – Yay, us, the children of light!  What shall we do with this light? (B23).  Memorize citation S29.  What does it mean to be a city set on a hill?  Do you live in that city?  Do you want to?  What are the benefits of living in such a city?
