[PSST: Learn the way and be quick to follow it. Turn to God with joy!]

Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

for March 27 – April 2, 2017

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – What are three action verbs in the Golden Text?

  1. Teach me
  2. Turn away… from… vanity
  3. Quicken me in thy way

Notice also the use of the word “way”. So, let’s examine this Lesson to learn more of the way and then hasten to follow it.

Read together Hymn 304 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – When individuals turn to the Lord, what are the results? Key words are to do so with joy and gladness. What does it mean to be ransomed? Who has paid the ransom so that you might have everlasting joy when following in the way? In this case, Jesus as the way-shower has provided the road map for us. This road map is the Christ, or God with us.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Since God is with us, He is ever at hand. Since Good is with us, Good is ever at hand. Use Good. Proclaim Good. Seek Good in every aspect of your life. Why? Because Good made you. You are made for goodness and cannot be tempted to follow any other way (B4 & S4). When thought is challenged to follow in the way of errors, what can you do about it? S5. By reversing error, where do you arrive? At the way of Truth, of the one Mind. What happens to error when you are in the way with Mind, Truth, Good? It disappears.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Does God, Good, lead or take us only part of the way? Read the Bible story in citation B6. What was the first part of the way and the final part of the way in this story? Conception or birth and deliverance from death or life. Where was joy in this story? Read also citation S6. What reversal occurred in this story? S8. Who was ransomed? Was it the man Elisha, or the Christ in the man Elisha, who paid the ransom for the woman and her son? How can you follow in this same way? S9.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Can you ever be abandoned by God? Even asking this question is absurd. How did Hezekiah pray to God in citation B9? What way was Sennacherib sent that provided freedom for Hezekiah? Did it also provide freedom for Sennacherib so he did not have to go to war? What was exterminated in this story since both kings were freed? What exterminated the error? S13, S14.

Read together Hymn 179 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below). Pay attention to the third verse. Is that the Christ pointing the way for us today? What are the truths in this verse? These truths illuminating our spiritual sense designate the way for us to go and our daily protection. S15.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What does it mean to gladly receive Jesus? B11. Does it mean to receive the man Jesus, or to receive the Christ and its message for all mankind of God with us? S16. What is the way message for us in citation B13?

Ask students to scan Mary Baker Eddy’s article “The Way” in Miscellaneous Writings, pages 355-359 in Prose Works, for the three stages she gives for growth: First, self-knowledge, Second, humility, Third, love. Read also citation S20 (4-7).

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Ask students to memorize citation B16. Can there be any accident when you are in the way of God, Good, with God, Good? S21.

Read together Hymn 90 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – How long will God’s guidance and counsel be with you? B17. Did the generations from the past receive all of God’s goodness and guidance, and so there is nothing left for you? B18. Being in the way with the Christ assures each of us forever protection, guidance, goodness in our lives. This is reality. As Christian Scientists, what mental construct do you have to reverse the unreal, that which would claim a loss of protection, guidance, goodness? S27.

Claim for yourself and all mankind that you can never be separated from God, so can never fall off the way God has planned for you.

Read together Hymn 58 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below). That is you, the blessed of the Lord.

Hymn 304:

Shepherd, show me how to go O’er the hillside steep,

How to gather, how to sow,—How to feed Thy sheep;

I will listen for Thy voice, Lest my footsteps stray;

I will follow and rejoice All the rugged way.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will, Wound the callous breast,

Make self-righteousness be still, Break earth’s stupid rest.

Strangers on a barren shore, Lab’ring long and lone,

We would enter by the door, And Thou know’st Thine own;

So, when day grows dark and cold, Tear or triumph harms,

Lead Thy lambkins to the fold, Take them in Thine arms;

Feed the hungry, heal the heart, Till the morning’s beam;

White as wool, ere they depart, Shepherd, wash them clean.

Hymn 179:

Love one another,—word of revelation; Love frees from error’s thrall,—Love is liberation. Love’s way the Master trod; He that loves shall walk with God. Love is the royal way.

Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness; Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness. Love heals our every ill, All the law does love fulfill. Love is our answered prayer.

Love now is dawning over every nation; Showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation, Love bids all discord cease. Conquering hate, enthroning peace, Love, Love alone is power.

Hymn 90:

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land:

I am Thine, and Thou art mighty, Hold me with Thy powerful hand.

Bread of heaven! Bread of heaven! Feed me now and evermore.
Open is the crystal fountain, Whence the healing waters flow;
And the fiery cloudy pillar Leads me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer! Strong Deliverer! Still Thou art my strength and shield.

Hymn 58:

Father, we Thy loving children Lift our hearts in joy today, Knowing well that Thou wilt keep us Ever in Thy blessed way.

Thou art Love and Thou art wisdom, Thou art Life and Thou art All; In Thy Spirit living, moving, We shall neither faint nor fall.

Come we daily then, dear Father, Open hearts and willing hands, Eager ears, expectant, joyful, Ready for Thy right commands.

We would hear no other voices, We would heed no other call; Thou alone art good and gracious, Thou our Mind and Thou our All.

In Thy house securely dwelling, Where Thy children live to bless, Seeing only Thy creation, We can share Thy happiness, Share Thy joy and spend it freely.

Loyal hearts can feel no fear; We Thy children know Thee, Father, Love and Life forever near.
