[PSST: Have a childlike foundation to draw near Christlike thought and practice! (3)]

Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Christ Jesus”

for February 25 – March 3, 2019 prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S.

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Share with students these two Bible verse translations of the Golden Text (GT) scripture:

  • “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the chief corner stone;” New American Standard Bible (NASB)
  • “The stone that the builders tossed aside is now the most important stone of all.” Contemporary English Version (CEV)

What is a corner stone in building, what is its purpose?

Dictionary.com offers the following:

  • A stone uniting two masonry walls at an intersection
  • A stone representing the nominal starting place in the construction of a monumental building, usually carved with the date and laid with appropriate ceremonies
  • Something that is essential, indispensable, or basic
  • The chief foundation on which something is constructed or developed

So based on this information, who or what is referred to in the GT as “the head of the corner”?

Can students think of any scriptural references to the stone that is foundational to the Christian religion?

Matthew 16:13-20 (especially 15-18) – Interestingly, Simon’s name had previously been changed to Peter by Jesus. The meaning of the word Peter or petros is stone. Was Jesus saying that Peter was now the head of the church or was he saying that Peter’s statement, “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God” is foundational or the cornerstone of this new religion? See also Science & Health 137:8 to 138:16. What is the cornerstone or foundation for us to follow today? SH 138:18-3.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Clearly the Responsive Reading (RR) states, “Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;”—Ephesians 2:20.

What else is said of Jesus in the RR?

  • My servant
  • Mine elect
  • In whom my soul delighteth

By the way, ask students if their physical church building has a corner stone? Where is it and what is inscribed on it?

See also Mary Baker Eddy’s statements about the laying of the cornerstone of The Mother Church?

  • Miscellaneous Writings 143:13, “Address – Laying the Corner-stone”
  • Miscellany 16:10, “The Corner-stone Laid”

Even though we have focused so far on the physical corner-stone, what is most important is an understanding of the Christ as our corner-stone. Let us look to the rest of this lesson with this in mind.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What did Jesus say of himself in citation B2? Were Jesus’ works limited to himself and his disciples? Citations S5 and S6.

Is the Christ with us today? How do you know, what is your proof? Read together the Question and Answer in Science & Health 495:25 – 496:19. This also responds to citation B6. What does it mean to be a follower of Christ Jesus?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Mary Baker Eddy refers to Jesus as “the most scientific man that ever trod the globe” (S7). What was Jesus’ basis for scientific healing? The Christ – that is, his understanding of God, of man, of all ideas of God’s creation, and how they worked together.

We arrive at this understanding often by prayer. What is prayer? Citations S9 and S10.

Read together Hymn 221 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words shown here):

O Jesus, our dear Master, / Thy works, now understood, / Reveal their full effulgence / Through love and brotherhood. / Today Christ's precious Science / Thy healing power makes plain: / With joy may all obey thee / And cast out sin and pain. /

The Christ, eternal manhood, / As God's own Son beloved, / A tender ever-presence / Within each heart is proved. / O God, our Father-Mother, / Thy name we see expressed / By man, who in Thy Science / Is perfect, holy, blessed. /

O Science, God-sent message / To tired humanity, / Thou art Love's revelation / Of Truth that makes us free. / Thy kingdom, God, within us / Shows forth Love's sweet control. / God's idea, man, rejoices; / He knows the reign of Soul.

(Hymn. 221:1–3)

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What are some qualities of being childlike that aid in our drawing nearer to the Christlike thought, experiences, and practice? Citations S16 and B9. Ask students to define, in their own words, “meekness” and “childlike”.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Who were Jesus’ disciples? How did they become disciples? They were called. What did they do when they were called? Were his disciples limited to 12? What about the seventy mentioned in citation B13? What about Paul, who was also not one of the 12? What about you? Why are you able to demonstrate the laws revealed in Christian Science? Citation S21. What does the word “demonstration” mean? Proof, give evidence of, practice the truth or scientific fact of a thing.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What are some ways you see in the world the presence of the Christ, even in the midst of daily news stories? Read citations S25 and S27 to guide your responses.

What are some foundational truths or corner-stones you use to anchor your prayers, or how you view your fellow ideas? Are you able to do this? See Miscellany, page 165:

“As an active portion of one stupendous whole, goodness identifies man with universal good. Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.”

(My. 165:16)

“The best man or woman is the most unselfed. God grant that this church is rapidly nearing the maximum of might, — the means that build to the heavens, — that it has indeed found and felt the infinite source where is all, and from which it can help its neighbor.”

(My. 165:28–1)

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What are the signs of the Christ, or God with us, that declare we are followers of Christ Jesus? Citation B18.

Read together the words on the Seal on the cover of the Christian Science Textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Why do you think Mary Baker Eddy placed those words so prominently? This is our call to action. Is it possible? Citation S30.

If you were laying a corner-stone today for your life, what would be inscribed on it? What would you place within it? Maybe a favorite hymn… (for me, that would be Hymn 12
