Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

for December 28, 2015 – January 3, 2016

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – What are some synonyms for the word “every”? Perhaps all, forever, individually, worldwide provided. What about no variableness? Perhaps each gift is given designed as unique for every individual’s need or desire. Perhaps no variableness could mean no one left out with a permanent gift from the Originator of all gifts. Does the Great Giftgiver ever turn His back on the recipient or ever withdraw a gift once given? Think in terms of these gifts as qualities expressed by each one; and that you have them permanently. No one can ever take them away. Even when you share your qualities, they are not reduced or diminished for you.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Read together the Moses experience in the Responsive Reading. What qualities was Moses expressing? Curiosity, vision, willingness, bravery, listening.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What are some of the characteristics of God listed in the Bible portion of this section? Greatness, power, glory, victory, majesty, everlasting love, lovingkindness, Redeemer, shepherd. What is the result for you as the expression of these qualities? B-6. Look to citation S-5 for a statement of the doctrine of Christian Science. Doctrine meaning teaching or instruction. Ask students to now complete this phrase, “God is like….”

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What is a covenant? Solemn promise. If you could meet God face-to-face on Mount Horeb, what would you ask Him? Ask students to write their questions on one side of an index card. After everyone is finished, ask them to turn the card over and write the answer they think God would give. We know that God is Love. What is our role in this relationship as the loved of Love? Look to citations S-7, S-10, and S-11 as guides to your response.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Where is God? B-10. Where is the Kingdom of God? B-13. Read together Psalm 139:7-12. Read together the definition of Kingdom of Heaven in citation S-16. Ask students to share their own definitions of unerring, eternal, omnipotent, and supreme.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Ask students to memorize citation B-15: “Power belongeth unto God.” Now read together the Bible story in citation B-14. Jesus was speaking with authority. From where did his authority come? Do you have the same authority? S-19. Why can you speak to disease as one having authority? What will be the result? You need never fear the outcome. S-20. God made you capable. Do not doubt this.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Does God play favorites? You have your answer from the Golden Text. Is it God’s desire that some are blessed and others are cursed; that some are healed and others ignored?

Should your prayers be for all mankind? Read together citation S-22. Since there is one God only, all are included in the blessings.

Read together citation S-24. What is the result of One infinite God? This is a good memory citation.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What was Paul’s message to the people of Athens on Mars’ hill? B-18. See also a correlated passage in Science & Health, citation S-26. What is the connection? One God, one creation. Why? S-30: “…in Him we live, and move, and have our being.”

Read together Hymn 269 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

Hymn 269 (& 270):

Our God is Love, unchanging Love, And can we ask for more?

Our prayer for Love’s increase is vain; ’Twas infinite before.

Ask not the Lord with breath of praise For more than we accept;

The open fount is free to all, God’s promises are kept.

Our God is Mind, the perfect Mind, Intelligence divine;

Shall mortal man ask Him to change His infinite design?

The heart that yearns for righteousness, With longing unalloyed,

In such desire sends up a prayer That ne’er returneth void.

O loving Father, well we know That words alone are vain,

That those who seek Thy will to do, The true communion gain.

Then may our deeds our pure desire For growth in grace express,

That we may know how Love divine Forever waits to bless.
