Possible Sunday School Topics by Merrill Boudreaux, CS, for the

Christian Science Bible Lesson: Substance – March 10-16, 2014

What is substance?  See Science & Health 468:17.

  • What is meaningful in your life?
  • What should be meaningful in your life?
  • Let us look to this Lesson for answers.

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text – How do you define goodness?  How would you define continual?  How would you define everlasting?

P.S.S.T.  Responsive Reading – Read this Bible story aloud.  How do you suppose Jesus was able to do this work?  Was it a miracle or was there a law of supply and demand, or a law of needs always being met, in operation?  What is the relevancy of this Bible story to your life today?  That is, is it just a good story or does it mean something more?  What might that something more be?

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – Ask students to create a praise list.  What five or so things might they list for which to praise God?  See why creating a wish list is unnecessary in citation S3.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – Read aloud together the 23rd Psalm.  What will always lead you?  What will always follow you?  Can you ever be outside of God’s care?  What qualities do you seek to gain or express?  What lies about you do you wish to shed?

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – Read the story of the Prodigal Son in citation B9.  What did the Prodigal desire before and then after the central experience in the story?  What was substance to him before and after the experience?  What characteristics did he need to shed and what qualities did he need to adopt or accept as truly his? See citation S14.  Ask students to share how their understanding of Christian Science permitted their being lifted higher? (S15)  Where do the qualities you express and talent of resources you possess come from? (S15)

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – Why do you think Jesus healed the blind men – Because they asked him to do so? Or, because it was impossible for him to do otherwise? Or, because he wanted to show the people that God is ever-present?  Or, because he wanted to show that the substance of Spirit is more powerful than a belief in the substance of matter?

Which should be real to you, material faculties (the five physical senses) or spiritual sense that reveals man’s (your) true nature?  Which of these is substantial, Spirit or matter?

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – For what did Paul have reason to praise God in the Bible story in citation B16?  Ask students to memorize citation B19.  What was Paul proving about the indestructible nature of the man of God’s creating?  That he is indestructible, watched over, beloved, protected, laws of God are ever in operation even on the remotest ocean or distant shore, that there are laws of God ever-available for our security and protection.

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – How long is everlasting or forever?  What is the job we are given to do in citation S30? (This is also good for memorization.)  What issue in your community needs your prayer?  How can the truth about what substance is help you pray effectively about the community issue?  What should be meaningful in your life — that which matter or spirit is revealing?  What 3 to 5 qualities will you take from this Lesson to put into practice this week?

Read aloud together Hymn 275 from The Christian Science Hymnal.
