[PSST: Feel safe regardless of the circumstances!]

Possible Sunday School Topics by Merrill Boudreaux, CS, for the

Christian Science Bible Lesson: God The Preserver of Man

for June 9-15, 2014

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text – Where is God in the midst of trouble?  Does God ever abandon Her idea?  Can you feel safe regardless of the circumstance?  Are these alternate questions worthy of consideration?

  • Where is my thinking when untoward stuff happens?
  • Do I cling to God for my safety?
  • Do I choose God over suggestions that it is possible for me to be harmed?

P.S.S.T.  Responsive Reading – Ask students to state the points in the prayer of petition in the Responsive Reading:

  • Hear the right
  • Attend unto my cry
  • Give ear unto my prayer
  • Hold up my goings
  • Incline thine ear unto me
  • Hear my speech
  • Etc.

Read aloud the prayer of affirmation in Romans 8:35, 37-39.  This is also a good memory opportunity.

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – Can you trust God?  Read aloud Hymn 359 from the Christian Science Hymnal.  Are you God’s beloved child? B3.  Ask students to state qualities of motherhood.  Can we ever be outside of God’s mothering care?  Read together citation B5 [–and maybe even listen to the camp song “Whither” being sung as a part of a Practitioner talk at CedarS.]  What is the prayer of affirmation in citation S5?  Define “unchanged.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – Read aloud Psalm 91.  Read the Bible story in citation B9.  This is a good acting-out opportunity.  How many stones did David gather when opposing Goliath?  How many did he actually use?  What did those stones represent?  Perhaps qualities affirming God with us.  Why was one stone sufficient?  One nugget of truth is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold on one. (S11 & S12)

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – Read the Bible story in citation B15.  Why did the waves obey Jesus?  Are there laws of the universe that we can call upon to give us aid?

  • One God, one Creator, one Mind, one intelligence
  • That which God creates must obey God forever
  • There are not two universes, one material and one spiritual.

You might ask students to read “God’s Law of Adjustment” by Adam Dickey.  Why must the material pattern the divine?  Read aloud together the Scientific Statement of Being in Science & Health 468:8-15.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – “There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling” – B17.  You need never fear – S21.  Counter the suggestion of “I am afraid that…” with the absolute truth, “Fear not.”  Ask each student to complete the phrase, “I am not afraid because…”  Since God, divine Love, underlies, overlies, and encompasses all true being, there is no room for anything unlike God, Love, Good.  Therefore, I will not and cannot be separated from God, Love, Good.  (S24)

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – Since all is Love, what cannot exist? S25.
Which of the following is true?

  • Ignorance or understanding?
  • Discord or harmony?
  • Separation from or connection to God?
  • Material sense or spiritual sense?
  • Deprivation or fulfillment?
  • Sorrow or joy?
  • Evil or good?
  • Sin, sickness, death, or perfection?

See citation S26.

Read aloud together Hymn 146 from the Christian Science Hymnal.
