[PSST: Enter and dwell in God's kingdom NOW!]
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Doctrine of Atonement”
for April 13-19, 2020

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. • 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT) – Do you wish to enter and dwell in the Kingdom of Heaven? Is it a far-off place or an “after-life” experience? Read the definition of Kingdom of Heaven in Science & Health 590:1. Now answer the questions, what and where is this place? Where did Jesus tell us we can/will find this place? See the following:

  • Matthew 3:2
  • Matthew 4:7
  • Matthew 10:7
  • Luke 17:21

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading (RR) How was the healing in the Responsive Reading evidence that the Kingdom of God is at hand, is here and now, is within each of us? Jesus also summed it up with the last statement in the RR: “I and my Father are one.”

Think about what you have read with a focus on “no separation” between God and you, and me, and all. Read together Hymn 135 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words printed here).

Hymn 135

I know no life divided, O Lord of life, from Thee;

In Thee is life provided For all mankind and me:

I know no death, O Father, Because I live in Thee;

Thy life it is that frees us From death eternally.

I fear no tribulation, Since, whatsoe'er it be,

It makes no separation Between my Lord and me:

Since Thou, my God and Father, Dost claim me as Thine own,

I richly shall inherit All good, from Thee alone.

Summarize the scripture story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32, BUT with a focus on the Prodigal’s brother and the message to him in Luke 15:31. This story reinforces no separation but at-one-ment.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – How does Mary Baker Eddy (MBE) explain atonement in Citation S1? What are some synonyms for at-one-ment in Citation S1? Unity, oneness. What illustration of oneness is provided in Citation S4?

  • A drop of water is one with the ocean
  • A ray of light is one with the sun

Read together Citation S5, “To be ‘with the Lord’ is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love, — by Spirit, not by matter.”

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – How many Gods are there? How many Gods do you have? Note the capital G and the “s” that renders it plural. This is for illustration only to promote the answer, one God only, and we have and can only have One. We must demonstrate this daily, moment-by-moment. Read Citation S9, “The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God’s will must be universally done.”

What is God’s will for you? Think about the declaration to the Prodigal’s brother, Luke 15:31.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – This section opens with a further explanation and instruction about our part in oneness. Read Citation B10.

And in Citation S14. What are some qualities of children? What is the relationship between parent and child, and child and parent?

Read together Hymn 174 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words printed here).

Hymn 174

Like as a mother, God comforteth His children;

Comfort is calm, that bids all tumult cease;

Comfort is hope and courage for endeavor,

Comfort is love, whose home abides in peace.

Love is true solace and giveth joy for sorrow,—

O, in that light, all earthly loss is gain;

Joy must endure, Love's giving is forever;

Life is of God, whose radiance cannot wane.

O holy presence, that stills all our demanding,

O love of God, that needs but to be known!

Heaven is at hand, when thy pure touch persuades us,

Comfort of God, that seeks and finds His own.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Read together Citation S21.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What is the gift God the Father has given to his children? (Citation B20)

How do you answer the questions posed in Citation S24?

  • Is Truth overcoming error in your daily walk and conversation?
  • Have you fought the good fight?
  • Are you a better “man” each day?
  • Do you labor and pray?
  • Are you advancing spiritually?
  • Are you turning away from material sense?
  • Are you honest?
  • Are you earnest?
  • Do you seek to finish your course with joy? (That is, are you joyful, are you happy, do you desire good for all with whom you come in contact?)

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Citation B22 takes us back to the presence of the Kingdom of Heaven. What is that voice saying to you? See Isaiah 30:21.

Now ask yourself the question posed by MBE in Science & Health 496:9.

All that you have read in this Lesson is yours, is a present reality. You are one with God; the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand and is yours; and “Son, all that God has is yours.” This is the nature of oneness.
