[PSST: “Do justly, …love mercy, and …walk humbly with thy God!” (#5)]
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

Matter – September 14-20, 2015
prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Let’s anchor this Lesson by reading aloud together Hymn 12 from the Christian Science Hymnal.

Hymn 12

Arise ye people, take your stand, Cast out your idols from the land, Above all doctrine, form or creed Is found the Truth that meets your need. Christ’s promise stands: they that believe His works shall do, his power receive.

Go forward then, and as ye preach So let your works confirm your speech, And prove to all with following sign The Word of God is power divine. In love and healing ministry Show forth the Truth that makes men free.

O Father-Mother God, whose plan Hath given dominion unto man, In Thine own image we may see Man pure and upright, whole and free. And ever through our work shall shine That light whose glory, Lord, is Thine.

Perhaps the Golden Text calls for a reading of Exodus 20:4. This is a command and a demand. Ask students to write for their eyes only what graven image or idols call for attention in their lives. Then they could write down the opposite metaphysical truth to counter that image or idol.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – The first thing to do in any prayer treatment is to allay fear. Anything that begins, “I’m afraid that…” is a wake-up call. What is stated in the Responsive Reading as truths that allay fears? Verse 22 is a good memory opportunity. How many Gods are there? You can rely on the one God, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, Principle, Love to meet every need.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Whom or what shall you fear? B1. What is the “house of the Lord”? It is your consciousness. What does dwelling in the “house of the Lord” provide? B2, fatness, river of pleasures…

Are you thinking this means material fatness and pleasures? Read citation S4 together. Why does matter not enter into the equation? I am reminded of a statement made by an acquaintance many years ago:

What’s the matter?

Nothing’s the matter.

There is no matter.

That ends the matter.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – You can take fledgling steps to apply Truth to smaller issues and continue your growth to handle more aggressive or challenging ones. Stick with the truth as Jacob did and receive the blessing. Read aloud together citations B7 and S11. What does Truth do for you? See citation S13, and its correlated biblical statement B8.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What are you earnestly seeking? Wisdom, understanding, harmony, healing? These are yours! Can you find them with the material senses or with spiritual sense? What is spiritual sense? See Science & Health 209:31-32. Does examining matter ever result in what you most desire? S15. Do you desire to witness the immortal facts of being? Ask students to make a list of the immortal facts of which they are certain.

Example: God is.
Good is.
God is Good.
I am God’s expression.
I am good.
So is all mankind.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – How do you praise God? With words, actions, good deeds? How did Jesus praise God in the Bible portion of Section 4 of this Lesson? How can you also master matter? S24.

What is the difference between discovery and demonstration? Mary Baker Eddy discovered the truths about God and you. What is your job? What does demonstration mean to you? S25.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What promises are made to you in citation B17? Doing God’s will is demonstration. What is God’s will for you? What does God desire of you? Micah 6:8 says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” “ ‘To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly’ is the standard of Christian Science.” (Miscellany 283:23-25). The context for this statement is Miscellany 283:14-25:

“Right thoughts and deeds are the sovereign remedies for all earth’s woe. Sin is its own enemy. Right has its recompense, even though it be betrayed. Wrong may be a man’s highest idea of right until his grasp of goodness grows stronger. It is always safe to be just.

“When pride, self, and human reason reign, injustice is rampant.

“Individuals, as nations, unite harmoniously on the basis of justice, and this is accomplished when self is lost in Love — or God’s own plan of salvation. ‘To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly’ is the standard of Christian Science.”

What is the demand in citation S29? Therefore, be vigilant.

Read together Hymn 258 from the Christian Science Hymnal.

Hymn 258:
Oft to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of Truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side. A great cause, God’s new Messiah, Shows to each the bloom or blight, So can choice be made by all men Twixt the darkness and the light.

New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient creeds uncouth; They must upward still and onward Who would keep abreast of Truth, And serenely down the future See the thought of men incline To the side of perfect justice And to God’s supreme design.

Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet ’tis Truth alone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong, Yet that scaffold sways the future, And behind the dim unknown Standeth God within the shadow Keeping watch above His own.
