P.S.S.T. Golden Text – How important is stillness? Consider how active individuals are these days, moving from one activity to another, from one sports or music practice to another. Ask students to estimate what percent of their day is spent in quietness or stillness? What can be the benefits of stopping and being still?

Ask students to consider Mary Baker Eddy’s admonition in the following statement: “Academics of the right sort are requisite. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of mortal mind out of itself, out of all that is mortal” (Science & Health 195:19). How would you define these key words: requisite, expansive, mortal mind? See also MBE’s further admonition in Miscellaneous Writings 230:12, “Rushing around smartly is no proof of accomplishing much.” Again, ask the question, What is the benefit of stillness? Read together Hymn 317 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below)

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What are the key words or phrases in the Responsive Reading that further encourage stillness?

  • Many… are thy wonderful works
  • Thy thoughts which are to us-ward
  • Marvelous are thy works… my soul knoweth right well
  • How precious are thy thoughts unto me…"they are more in number than the sand;" [quantified by Laurance Doyle in one of his several YouTube lectures]
  • labour for that which satisfieth not

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – In what ways do you seek and find wisdom, understanding, and truth? Who leads you in the paths of judgment? What is the result in citation B1? “…inherit substance and I will fill their treasures”? How deep is God’s wisdom and God’s riches? Why are you the inheritor of that wisdom and those treasures?

See Mary Baker Eddy’s (MBE’s) response to the question: “How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science? SH 495:25-19. How can you begin? Citation S1: “…begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is.” See what additional benefits are yours in this practice. S4: “As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of Creation, which before were invisible, will become visible.”

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Until you understand something – whether in athletics, the arts, academics, or socially, what value does faith or belief have, especially when you know in your gut what is so, but you don’t yet see the evidence of it? One tool to use is metaphysics. What is metaphysics? S8. So, do you desire to have more spiritual consciousness, spiritual awareness? Do you desire more angels in your life? See SH 521:4 and citation S9.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What are some foundational statements in the Bible portion of this section to further anchor your thinking, your stillness?

  • Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God
  • In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth
  • God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good
  • I am the Lord, and there is none else

Where do we find substance or that which is substantial? Do we look to matter or the physical senses? If so what will we find? Do we look to Spirit or the spiritual? If so, what will we find? The universe that reflects and expresses Mind, God. S15.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Have you ever thought of Spirit, the Creator of the universe, as the great architect? S16. What is an architect? What are the tools of the architect’s trade? Math, accuracy, creativity, building that which is substantial (that won’t fall down; built for the ages). [Also see architect Warren Huff’s insights on the 10 Commandments being the great Architect’s Specs in W’s PS#3 or as a Download online.]

Ask students if they know of or have seen any architectural wonders? Skyscrapers, bridges, pyramids, spaceships, ocean liners, self-driving cars, cellular phones. How do these relate to MBE’s statement about “academics of the right sort” (SH 195:19, noted above). What about man as one of the great architect’s greatest creations? Isn’t he, you, wonderful?

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Is any left out of God’s great good work? B13. Therefore, if anyone seems broken, ill, unprincipled, upset, unhappy, unjust, or unjustly treated, see what Jeremiah tells us in citation B15: “…I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord.” Does God hear our prayers? Read together the story of Hezekiah and Isaiah in citation B16. How long will the great architect exist and care for His creation? B17: “The Lord will endure for ever.” Can you, will you, trust that? B19: “…we shall be saved.”

Where can you find the “recipe for all healing”? See SH 406:1 for the answer. Therefore, should you be a student of the Bible? Should you spend some stillness time each day with the Bible? Think how wise that MBE provided us a Daily Lesson Sermon to aid in our stillness work.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Who can you turn to for further guidance in practicing stillness? Remember Jesus, who spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness. What does citation B20 tell us? “The Lord shall guide thee continually…” God has given us the Comforter to be a support. See SH 55:27: “In the words of St. John: ‘He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.’ This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science.”

Read together SH 55:15: “Truth’s immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning. My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself, — when he shall realize God’s omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done and is doing for mankind.” This is a significant promise and is yours today. What is the further guidance in citations S29 and S30? Are you willing to commit to stillness each day?

P.S.S.T. Section 7 – Read together Psalm 46:10,11(to 1st .):

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

Hymn 317

Still, still with Thee when purple morning breaketh,
When the bird waketh, and the shadows flee,
Fairer than morning, lovelier than the daylight,
Dawns the sweet consciousness, I am with Thee.

Alone with Thee, amid the changing shadows,
Solemn the hush of nature, newly born;
Alone with Thee, in breathless adoration,
In the calm dew and freshness of the morn.

So shall it ever be in the bright morning,
When hearts awaking see the shadows flee,
O, in that hour, and fairer than the dawning,
Rises the glorious thought, I am with Thee.
