[PSST: Clearly communicate Spirit’s perfection & carefree strength. (6, H# 453)]
Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

for January 30-February 5, 2017

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – If God was searching you, what would She see or find in you? Here’s a hint: From what Mary Baker Eddy states that Jesus would see in you: Science & Health 476: 32-5, “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man….” [“perfect for all to see” Hymn 453 refrain]

Can you ever go away from this perfect man, this spiritual you? Read the entire passage that begins in the Golden Text: Psalms 139:7-10. Think with this Lesson, how you are beheld by God, Spirit, but also that you are held by God, Spirit. Think also of these words from a favorite song, “On Eagle’s Wings”:

“You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in his shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, ‘My refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust!’
And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.”

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What do you see in the text in the Responsive Reading that shows biblical prophecy for the coming of Jesus and also a link to us as Christian Scientists? Who has established you? Who has set His seal on you? What does it mean to have the seal of God, Spirit, set on you? Are you an able minister? What is the power given to able ministers? Liberty. What are synonyms of liberty? (freedom…).

Read together Hymn 453 from the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement (below).

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is the role of Spirit in searching you? B2. What is revealed about you during this searching? Since you have received the things of the Spirit, what are you to do with them? B3. What does it mean to glorify God in your body? Does this refer to your physical body? Might it also refer to the body of your works, talents, education, athletic abilities, good works for others in need? When you, like Jesus, behold yourself and all others through the lens of Spirit, what do you see? S5. This is a great memorization opportunity. What does the word multitudinous mean? (many, numerous). Therefore, do you have only one talent? If you are multi-talented then you can have success or achieve on many levels.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What is the prayer of petition in citation B5? What does uprightness mean? (evenness, equality, justice). How can this prayer be used by you in your schoolwork, social gatherings athletic events, family relationships? Read together the Bible story in citation B7. What is the prayer of petition in this story? Was the petition fulfilled? See a possible outcome stated in citation S7. What do your students know of Elijah and Elisha? Use the Concordance or a Bible research guide or some other Bible translations to read some stories about these two and their roles as prophets. There are 63 references to Elijah and 52 references to Elisha. So there will be something for every student to research.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What is the promise in citation B9 from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy? What is the Elisha story in citation B10? What does M.B. Eddy (MBE) say of the help these stories provide in citation S10? What is the relevancy of salt in this Bible story? For what is salt used? (preserver, purifier, seasoning). When a person is referred to as “salt of the earth” what do you think that reveals about their character?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What is the promise of Jesus in citation B11? Is this promise also for you today? Remember what we referred to in the Golden Text as to what Jesus saw. Ask students to write down a few of the fruits or qualities they possess and are evident in their lives. Some of these may be really clear, some may be aspirational. What are the fruits of the Spirit or, as MBE states, the attributes of God in Science & Health 465:14. These qualities of Spirit will aid you in taking a stand against suggestions of evil (S19 and S20). What is the result? S20: “…you will control yourself harmoniously.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What are the powerful promises from God to you in citation B17? Since “Children should be taught the Truth-cure, Christian Science, among their first lessons,” as stated in citation B22, ask students to share any recent healings they have experienced or witnessed when relying on Christian Science. Why do these healings occur? S24. Are you this indestructible man?

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What is the day of Pentecost? B22. What happened on that day? What did the disciples receive? What did they do as a result? B23. Of what was the receiving of the tongues of fire symbolic? See the story in Luke 24:13-16, 27-34. What about us today? Can we receive the Spirit that makes our hearts burn? See MBE’s answer in SH 46:5. What was one of the gifts given to the disciples at the Pentecost gathering? They were able to speak and be understood in the varied languages of everyone who heard them speak. Is this a hint of our ability to communicate clearly and effectively to everyone with whom we come in contact? [See more on communication from Cobbey Crisler in PS#3 at the end of CedarS Met by Kerry Jenkins.]

P.S.S.T. Section 7 – What is the promise in citation B25? “We are the children of God.” Note the use of the word “we”. Can any be excluded? Therefore, what must be the result of “we”? S30. Harmony, man eternal. Know that the spirit of God has descended on you and will continue to do so. Your job is to accept it. See SH 249:1-11 as a fitting summation for this Lesson.

Hymn 453: [The 2017 Theme Hymn for CedarS as described online]

Rise up and walk, take up your bed. With these few words the sickness fled.

Stretch forth your hand. Receive your sight. Jesus’ commands reveal God’s might.

You are God’s purpose, His great design. Beautiful, blameless, His child divine.

Holding your thought to the good and the true, Spirit will form you anew.

REFRAIN: Rise up and walk! God made you free, born of His liberty.

Carefree and strong, you are His song, perfect for all to see.

Mountains and seas, great rising trees, echo the joyous song:

Heaven is here, harmony’s bliss to everyone belongs.

Cleanse the lepers, heal the sick. Cast out demons. Raise the dead.

Truth is revealed in every place, Throughout all time, throughout all space.

Right in this moment, doing God’s will “These works shall you do, and greater still.” Standing triumphant upon holy ground, Songs of the angels resound.
