Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

Adam and Fallen Man” – October 31-November 6, 2016

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Ask students what they think the word “upright” in the Golden Text means. Ask them to offer substitute words to bring out the meaning. Examples: principled, man of integrity, true to his word, focused on spiritual things, unfallen.

These statements can be the healing opposite to the material senses which claim man as a sinner, sick, or fallen out of God’s good grace. Let us examine this Lesson through the lens of man as secure in being kept by God.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What is man’s inheritance as stated in the Responsive Reading?

  • Permanency in relationship to his Creator
  • No shame ever accrues to man
  • Man is never forsaken
  • You are a saint
  • All aspects of you are forever preserved
  • God has given all things (lands or foundations) to man
  • You are wise so speak with wisdom
  • You are able to judge righteously
  • Your steps are straight ahead, never deviating from good
  • You can always afford to wait for God’s guidance

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What was God’s declaration and promise in citation B2? Is that a permanent declaration? Has God made two kinds of man? What would be the purpose in that? What is the demand in citation B4?

Read citation S3. Man kept by God is what? Perfect, the image and reflection of God, this truth can never be subverted (overturned, overthrown, corrupted). Now answer some baseline questions: Who made man, why did God make man, can God’s reason for making man ever be thwarted or “mist”ified?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Ask students for ideas on inventions that man has brought forth to benefit mankind. Is this a hint of man’s ability to overcome false inventions like war, strife, stress, insufficiency? Man, kept by God, always has and always will have whatever is needed to maintain his upright nature. Abundance is his, knowledge is his, dominion is his, longevity is his.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Read together the bible story in citation B8. What are the lies put forth in this story?

  • A person can hear a voice other than God’s
  • It is possible for people to be deceived
  • The physical senses can define a reality for people, and often it is not good
  • People can desire to have both good and evil
  • People can blame God when they have chosen unwisely
  • God can and did condemn people forever and separated Himself from them

Was there a standard of perfection established by God in Genesis 1? Was that standard of perfection permanent? How then is it possible for people to be separated from that perfection? What is the purpose of this allegory (story) just read in citation B8? See citation S12 (537:19-21). Even if it were possible for man to choose wrongly or to sin, God (who keeps man) will aid in man’s destruction of this self-generated sin. See also Tenet 3 in Science & Health (497:9).

Read together Hymn 93 in the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What did the healing in citation B13 indicate of God’s care for His creation? Read also citation S15. What helps overcome the thought-model of a fallen, sinning, sick, and dying mortal? Go back to Genesis 1. Perfection was, is, and ever will be – this is the nature of upright man. You can use this truth to resist the myth of a fallen man. (S18) This truth entertains harmony in your life and can be directly applied to world situations. Ask students to take a world situation and write out a prayer treatment based on this Lesson’s theme of man kept upright by God, his/her Creator.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – As a Christian Scientist you are called upon to overcome the tendencies to believe in matter, life in matter, or the possibility for evil to exist. See citation S20. Ask students how they think this demand is to be achieved. See citation S21 for a hint.

  1. God made you superior to sin
  2. God keeps you from sin
  3. God’s power of love is your sufficient aid
  4. God cares for you and all ideas
  5. You are capable of discerning truth from evil
  6. You are perfect, God made you that way, and everyone else also.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Ask students to memorize the Aaronic Blessing from Numbers 6:24-26:

  • 24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
  • 25 The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
  • 26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Why is it important to study Christian Science; more than important it is an imperative? (S25)

You have never lost your spiritual estate, your spiritual harmony.

Read together Hymn 12 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

Hymn 93 “Peace”:

Happy the man whose heart can rest, Assured God’s goodness ne’er will cease; Each day, complete, with joy is blessed, God keepeth him in perfect peace.

God keepeth him, and God is one, One Life, forevermore the same, One Truth unchanged while ages run; Eternal Love His holiest name.

Dwelling in Love that cannot change, From anxious fear man finds release; No more his homeless longings range, God keepeth him in perfect peace.

In perfect peace, with tumult stilled, Enhavened where no storms arise, There man can work what God hath willed; The joy of perfect work his prize.

Hymn 12:

Arise ye people, take your stand, Cast out your idols from the land, Above all doctrine, form or creed Is found the Truth that meets your need. Christ’s promise stands: they that believe His works shall do, his power receive.

Go forward then, and as ye preach So let your works confirm your speech, And prove to all with following sign The Word of God is power divine. In love and healing ministry Show forth the Truth that makes men free.

O Father-Mother God, whose plan Hath given dominion unto man, In Thine own image we may see Man pure and upright, whole and free. And ever through our work shall shine That light whose glory, Lord, is Thine.
