Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT) – Ask students to rephrase the Golden Text by substituting the seven prominent synonyms for God which Mrs. Eddy uses. Ask them to add any further synonyms they may think of for God as well. How do these substitutions expand their thought of who God is and how this Cause and Creator applies to all mankind and all ideas? Who is left out when this GT statement is applied? How does each of the synonyms substituted govern man and all ideas and their behaviors?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Read what Mrs. Eddy says about the Lord’s Prayer in Science & Health 16:9-11. Once again, whose human needs to be met are left out? Now have the conversation about what “Our Father” means. What word did Jesus use to refer to Our Father? “Abba” is an Aramaic word; this is the language Jesus spoke, and was used by Jesus and Paul to address God in a relationship of personal intimacy. When you enter your closet for a conversation with God, what words do you use to address God? Look to Hymn 212 (below) in the Christian Science Hymnal for words Mrs. Eddy uses to address God in her conversation called “Mother’s Evening Prayer.”

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Ask students to identify statements of who God says God is and what God does from the Isaiah passages in this section. The personal relationship of Abba mentioned previously aligns with God as Father-Mother (S-3). What is another word used in citation S-3 to indicate how personal is that relationship? (tender.) What other word does Mrs. Eddy use in citation S-4 (lines 28 & 29) about that tender relationship? (adorable.)

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What does Jeremiah affirm about God’s relationship with us in citation B-8? Where is heaven, the kingdom of heaven? (S-5, S-6) What does Mrs. Eddy state that heaven represents? (S-8) What words are used in citation S-9 to help us relate to harmony’s accomplishment, impact, or presence in any human endeavor? Is this a wishful state or an absolute truth? Ask students for any experiences they had when applying any of these qualities to a situation appearing inharmonious? What were the results?

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What did Jesus say was his desire in citation B-13? Ask students to listen quietly for a few moments, then write down for their eyes only the answer to the question, “What is God’s will for me right now?” We are praying with Mrs. Eddy’s spiritual interpretation to a verse in the Lord’s Prayer: “Enable us to know….” This silences the lie that suggests I can’t hear anything. See also the phrase in citation S-14, “…God’s will must be universally done.”

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – What is the prayer of petition in citation B-15? What does bread represent? (S-15) How should we express grace daily? (S-16) Are you benefitted when praying for this daily bread? (S-17) What does “patience” mean? What are some characteristics of patience? How did the women in citation B-16 practice patience and persistence? Read SH 15:28-30. What is the key word? (assuredly.)

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Read together the Bible story in citation B-20. What does “forgiveness” mean? How was forgiveness employed and not employed in this story? What is Mrs. Eddy’s spiritual interpretation of forgiveness in citation S-21? See also her definition of “Gethsemane” in SH 586:23. What happened to Jesus at Gethsemane? How did he express forgiveness? What words did he use even when nailed to the cross? See Luke 23:34. Remember, Jesus is our way-shower.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What are we called on to do in citation B-22? Watch. What are we to watch? Our thinking. What is the blessing in citation B-23 when we watch out to avoid temptations to believe in a cause or creator other than God? What is the prayer of assurance in citation B-24? You shall be delivered! Read together citation S-27. Watch out for deception. Citation S-28 affirms “God does not cause men to sin, to be sick, or to die.” What is your standpoint? See SH 239:20. Help students to memorize citation S-29. This is an excellent standpoint.

P.S.S.T. Section 7 – Ask students to write for their eyes only the answer to the question, “How am I going to use the Lord’s Prayer today?” Close with reading together Hymn 204 from the Christian Science Hymnal (below).

Hymn 212:

O gentle presence, peace and joy and power; O Life divine, that owns each waiting hour, Thou Love that guards the nestling’s faltering flight! Keep Thou my child on upward wing tonight.

Love is our refuge; only with mine eye Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall: His habitation high is here, and nigh, His arm encircles me, and mine, and all.

O make me glad for every scalding tear, For hope deferred, ingratitude, disdain! Wait, and love more for every hate, and fear No ill,—since God is good, and loss is gain.
