P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT) – This passage in John is sandwiched between two of the same statement: “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you.” So first of all, acknowledge that God has chosen you, has ordained you as a disciple – follower – of Christ Jesus. To do what? Love one another! What is the fruit you are called on to bring forth? Love one another. How long does that fruit, that love for one another, remain? There is no end in sight of this call to love one another. If you find it difficult to love someone, look to the end of verse 16 in John 15, “…whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” Do you consider this the legacy from Christ Jesus to you? That ye love one another. Read together Romans 13:10, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” What is the law referred to? Could it be the law that underpins the relationship in the Golden Text? You are chosen by God but not only are you chosen, but so is every other idea. None is left out. See also Matthew 7:20, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” How do you desire to be remembered?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – We know that Jesus regularly used agricultural analogies to make a point, as those were images his followers/listeners could understand. What do you think is the relationship between the vine and the fruit or the branch and the fruit? If you are the fruit, can you be other than what the vine or branch produces? Is that a law? Yes! Just like love is the law, therefore you cannot help but love and that without condition.

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is the promise in citation B1? Could it be that it’s OK to begin small, but be assured that love will grow. Like the pebble thrown in the pond has an ever-widening ripple effect. What is listed as the result as Lebanon is turned into a fruitful field? You can take this literally. To those who have known Cedars Camps over many years and seen it grow and expand its programs to meet a variety of needs, you can attest to the result of the foundational love from Mrs. Huff to provide a rich camping experience for young people in a shorter (two week) session, when other camps required campers to be at camp all summer long to have the experience. Would you agree that the spirit of the Lord is upon Cedars and the many campers and staff who come each summer? It is one as part of love is the fulfilling of the law. Who is the messenger referred to in citation B3? What is the message? See also citation B4. Ask students to write out for their eyes only how they are exhibiting the Christ, as the true idea voicing good (S2).

We often see the words Principle and love joined together in Science and Health. Why is that appropriate? If Principle is permanent and “extends through time and includes universal humanity” (S4), what does that tell us of love and the power of love?

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – How did Jesus show forth his love for humanity at the marriage feast in Cana in citation B6? Could Jesus do otherwise than to exhibit love for mankind? Read together citation S9. How was this so-called miracle the demonstration of divine Love? Could Jesus have done otherwise than meet this human need? Remember that love just loves – it does not start and stop, or come to one but not to another. As you don’t give a thought to breathing, you just breathe, that is how Love functions, it just loves. Read together Hymn 179 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed below).

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Do you desire to follow Christ Jesus in all aspects of his life’s work, to be a Christian? Following requires demonstration. Demonstration of what? S13, S14, S15. What is the difference between discovery and demonstration? Mary Baker Eddy discovered the laws of Love and Life. It is up to us to demonstrate, or apply, these laws in our lives and the lives of humanity. Ask students to state as simply as possible a law of Life or Love and how they are demonstrating or applying it. What is the treasure you desire above all else? How do you get it? S16. Truly do you have to hunt for this treasure, or is it already yours by nature of God’s ordinance as stated in the Golden Text?

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Your power to cast out unclean spirits and to heal all manner of disease (B13) is already yours as a disciple of Jesus Christ. What does the word “disciple” mean? S18. How can you be sure the laws of Christ Jesus are still operative today? S20. Is God with you as God was with Christ Jesus? See S&H 583:10:

“Christ.  The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.”

and 473:10-12:

“Christ is the ideal Truth, that comes to heal sickness and sin through Christian Science, and attributes all power to God.”

Are you certain of this? S21.

See also Romans 8:35,37-39:

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What “enables you to demonstrate with scientific certainty the rule of healing, based on the divine Principle, Love”? See S&H 496:15-19:

“Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, over-lying, and encompassing all true being.”

This can be demonstrated in small and large ways. Do not be discouraged if you fail in your first attempt. S24, S23, and S25. “The waters will be pacified, and Christ will command the wave” (S27). It isn’t so much that Peter wanted to walk on the water and began to sink, but that the Christ was present to lift him up.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What is the prayer of Paul in citation B18 to the Philippians? Is that a prayer for us also? Are you ready to follow Jesus’ example? S29, lines 8-10. You are not alone. See John 5:30:

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”

and Philippians 4:13:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Why, because as the Golden Text states,“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you….”

Hymn 179

Love one another,—word of revelation;

Love frees from error’s thrall,—Love is liberation.

Love’s way the Master trod; He that loves shall walk with God.

Love is the royal way.

Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness;

Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness.

Love heals our every ill, All the law does love fulfill.

Love is our answered prayer.

Love now is dawning over every nation;

Showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation,

Love bids all discord cease. Conquering hate, enthroning peace,

Love, Love alone is power.
