Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on

for August 26, 2018

By Steve Henn, C.S. St. Louis, Missouri

PSST Golden Text (GT) – What does it mean for understanding to be infinite? [W: Couldn’t it mean to totally understand, like Jesus did, that life is infinite, that we are not both material and spiritual, but rather totally spiritual, infinite?] Encourage your students to think beyond just understanding an idea learned in school. What about understanding someone else’s feelings? Understanding a situation and what needs to happen in it? What other types of understanding could be indicated here? And what is the source of all this understanding?

PSST Responsive Reading (RR) – Why is wisdom so valuable? [W: Again, couldn’t supremely valuable wisdom be spiritual wisdom like “the poor wise man” exercised to deliver his “city” no matter what tried to “besiege” it?] Is such wisdom more valuable than gold, silver, or other precious metals and gems? Really? Ask your students what it is about wisdom that makes it so valuable. And then discuss with them how to obtain this most precious of resources – look at Job 28:28.

PSST Section 1 – How often do we consciously glory in God? Why is it important to recognize God’s glory? How often should we do it? Is there anything we do that could be done without God? Are your students ever tempted or tricked into giving matter glory? Why is it a “grave mistake” to see matter as having any reality?

PSST Section 2 – Do your students understand why this story is so special? Consider sharing with them the customs and norms of the day, and why Jesus’ actions are so remarkable. What does Jesus mean, “Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business”? How often do we put God’s priorities first in our lives? What would that have to do with wisdom or intelligence?

PSST Section 3 – What is the path of life, and where is true joy found? What does it mean to be faithful to Truth and Love? Do your students ever think of Christian Science as helping them to be a blessing for the world, for their friends and family? What can your students do to bless someone else with Science this coming week?

PSST Section 4 – Why is a “sound mind” put in the same place as having the spirit of power and love? What is a sound mind? [W: Again, could a sound mind be the fearless intelligence, understanding or wisdom that see all as spiritual, infinite rather than unsound, finite?]
How does that state of existence combat against fear, sin, disease and death? Are your students fully on board with the allness of God? Are they ever tricked into believing in a power called evil? How can they respond when that temptation comes? What can they do to better understand that there is only one power, not two?

PSST Section 5 – How did Jesus preach so eloquently without having had a formal education? What can your students learn from Jesus’ example that will help them in their school activities? Where did Jesus’ teachings come from? Is it helpful to your students to consider the reality of only one Ego, God, Mind or intelligence? What would that mean for them in school, or on the athletic field?

PSST Section 6 – What does it mean that we have the mind of Christ? Is that a suggestion or an option? Why is that stated so definitely? Do we have any choice in that matter? And who has the mind of Christ? Is it just us? What about those we love? What about those who we see as something other than good and loving, do they have the mind of Christ? If we are willing to say they do, what does that mean about how we view and interact with them?
