[PSST: Be anointed today with Christ's "oil of gladness" (RR)]
Possible Sunday School Topics
by Merrill Boudreaux, CS, for the

Christian Science Bible Lesson: Christ Jesus — February 24-March 2, 2014

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text – What does it mean to testify to what you have seen?  What would a witness say, verify, validate about something they have seen?  In what are we asked to testify in the Golden Text?  Did, does the world need saving?  From what do we need to be saved?

P.S.S.T.  Responsive Reading (RR) – What hath/has God given us?  Make a list from the Responsive Reading.  Why hath/has God given these to us?  What do you think is “the oil of gladness”?  What does it mean to be anointed?  During Jesus’ time this was a special ritual.  Ask students to share a Bible story where Jesus was anointed by someone.  Mary, when Jesus was visiting Simon’s house (Luke 7:36-48).  See also Mathew 26:6-13 for another example.

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – How are you an eyewitness to Jesus and his majesty even though you did not live during his time?  Where does Jesus live even today?  In the gospels (the good news) and in your hearts.  What was Jesus’ mission?  S1 & S3.  Is that mission active today?  How are you a witness to it?  Every healing, every testimony on Wednesday nights or in the Journal or the Sentinel.  Perhaps this would be a good time for students to write out a testimony of their own.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – Read the Bible portion of this section aloud.  Was Jesus born for Mary alone or was Jesus born unto all of us?  Was the promise of “…on earth peace, good will toward men” limited to Jesus’ day only or is it so for us now?  How can you be an eyewitness to peace in our time?  Is there anyone in class who can share an example of how they witnessed peace in their life?

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – What is the Messiah?  How do you know it is Jesus, the Christ?  What does the Messiah, Christ, come to do? S11.  Were Jesus’ healings miracles?  Were they exclusive to his time on earth? S12.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – Where did Jesus teach and preach? B9.  Do you recognize any of these place names in the news today?  Has God left Syria or Galilee?  How can the good news that Jesus taught still be applied to Syria today? S15.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – Jesus’ emphasis was on doing, not just talking.  What did Jesus do in B11?  Read aloud the Bible story in citation B11.  Review again Jesus’ mission in citation S20.  Could Jesus have avoided healing the man?  This demonstration of God with us and God with the man at the pool was natural and an outpouring of the natural love Jesus had for mankind.  Demonstrating this love was part of his mission.

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – Who wrote the Bible portion of this section? Paul.  Did Paul personally know Jesus?  What is the message Paul is preaching here?  Jesus’ resurrection.  Why is the resurrection story important? S22.  Are we to have our own resurrection story? S25.  Does mastering sin and death come at a distant point in the future or is it a current action?

P.S.S.T.  Section 7 – What was the legacy Jesus left to us?  Christian healing as revealed in Christian Science (S27), and the promise from Jesus that he would pray the Father to send us another Comforter (See John 14:16 and Science & Health 55:27).  What is the purpose of this Comforter?  Perhaps to aid us in being an eyewitness to God with us (S28, S29).

Read aloud together Hymn 81 from the Christian Science Hymnal.
