Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Christ Jesus”
for February 24-March 1, 2020

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. • 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT) and Responsive Reading (RR) Jesus often spoke to his followers in parables.

What is a parable? Why do you suppose Jesus spoke to his followers that way?

When reading the GT and RR, answer these questions:

  • What is the relationship between shepherd and sheep?
  • Why is that relationship important?
  • Which was Jesus, shepherd or sheep?
  • Which are you, shepherd or sheep?
  • With what kind of voice did Jesus speak, so that all sheep would follow him?
  • What do you think that voice sounds like and what does it say to you?
  • Where can you ‘hear’ Jesus’ voice, his messages, his parables? The four Gospels.

What are the names of the four Gospels? What does the word ‘gospel’ mean? Good news!

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What is the good news as told by Isaiah in citation B1?

Who is this prince of peace? What evidence is written in citation B3 that Jesus was anointed by God? Jesus was “imbued” with the Christ. The Christ animated Jesus.

What did the authority of the Christ permit Jesus to do? Citation S4.

What was Jesus’ mission? “…to prove what God is and what He does for man.”

What does God do for man, for you, as revealed by the Christ?

See the definition of “Christ” in Science & Health 583:10. What does this definition imply? That God manifested God’s self to Jesus of Nazareth and manifests God’s self to you and all mankind, everywhere, today and forever.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – As the good shepherd, what was Jesus’ life’s work? Citation S5.

How would you define the word “demonstration”? How important are demonstrations of the Christ, or God with us, today – in your life? What did Christ Jesus demonstrate, as stated in Citation S7?

  • He demonstrated the divine Life
  • He defined Love
  • He vanquished error
  • Earth received the harmony his glorified example introduced

Are you willing to be a sheep, a follower after your Master’s voice? Citation S8.

If you are willing, what opportunity lies before you? Citation S10.

It is possible. Citation S9.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Read together Citation S14. This is a good memorization opportunity.

How can you follow your Master and see yourself and your fellow man as Jesus did? What did Jesus see in this perfect man? “…God’s own likeness…”

What did Jesus teach about the kingdom of God? Citation S14.

So, you want to do this also? Here is a prayer for you – read together Hymn 304 in the Christian Science Hymnal (words printed here):

Hymns 304-309, 573-576:

Shepherd, show me how to go O'er the hillside steep, How to gather, how to sow,— How to feed Thy sheep; I will listen for Thy voice, Lest my footsteps stray; I will follow and rejoice All the rugged way.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will, Wound the callous breast, Make self-righteousness be still, Break earth's stupid rest. Strangers on a barren shore, Lab'ring long and lone, We would enter by the door, And Thou know'st Thine own;

So, when day grows dark and cold, Tear or triumph harms, Lead Thy lambkins to the fold, Take them in Thine arms; Feed the hungry, heal the heart, Till the morning's beam; White as wool, ere they depart, Shepherd, wash them clean.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Do you ever have times when you desire to be comforted? Where can you look? Do you know of any scripture stories where Jesus said: “be of good comfort” or “be not afraid” or “fear not”?

Read the scripture story in citation B11. How were these 4,000 men plus women and children comforted? Anything beyond being fed with loaves and fishes?

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – How does shepherd and servant apply to Jesus’ instruction to his followers in the scripture story in citation B12? Are you Jesus’ follower? Then how can we use his teaching today?

See citations S20 and S21 —

  • How does “meekness” show up in your experience? (use active synonyms)
  • How does “charity” show up in your experience? (look up definition of “charity”)
  • How does “might” show up in your experience? (again, find synonyms)
  • How can you “preach the gospel [good news] to the poor”? (“poor” here means what?)

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What was Jesus’ prayer for you in citation B14? We are all one in Christ Jesus.

Jesus demonstrated that oneness with God. Citation S22.

How do you see the evidence of God with us in others? How do they see the evidence of God with us in you? Read together citation S24.

P.S.S.T. Section 7 – How do you answer the question Jesus posed to Simon Peter in citation B15? What is the command to you as a sheep who follows his Master’s voice in citation S26?

  • “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect!” and,
  • “…preach the gospel [good news] to every creature!” and,
  • “Heal the sick.”

What do you think is the good news you learned from this Lesson?

Read together Hymn 221 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words printed here):

Hymns 221 & 543

O Jesus, our dear Master,

Thy works, now understood,

Reveal their full effulgence

Through love and brotherhood.

Today Christ's precious Science

Thy healing power makes plain:

With joy may all obey thee

And cast out sin and pain.

The Christ, eternal manhood,

As God's own Son beloved,

A tender ever-presence

Within each heart is proved.

O God, our Father-Mother,

Thy name we see expressed

By man, who in Thy Science

Is perfect, holy, blessed.

O Science, God-sent message

To tired humanity,

Thou art Love's revelation

Of Truth that makes us free.

Thy kingdom, God, within us

Shows forth Love's sweet control.

God's idea, man, rejoices;

He knows the reign of Soul.
