Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on

“Doctrine of Atonement”

PSST Golden Text (GT): What is the importance of the number “one”? Why is it so important that there is only one God and only one mediator between man and God?

PSST Responsive Reading (RR): What is the purpose of Jesus’ mission, as stated in this Responsive Reading? What can we learn from this mission? How does it relate to us? What does it teach us about our own relationship to God, Christ, and others?

PSST Section 1: How does knowing there is only one God, and loving Her supremely lead to salvation instead of condemnation? How do justice and mercy relate to Jesus’ life work?
Is loving God supremely, and knowing that there is only one true power a difficult thing?
What resistance do we experience when we move in this direction?
How can we overcome this resistance either in our own thinking or in the thinking of others?

PSST Section 2: Who is in need of redemption? What critical lesson do we learn from the parable of the Prodigal Son? Do we look at others as needing to be redeemed? How often do we look inward for our own need of redemption? How does this work of redemption and example of the Prodigal relate to oneness, the oneness of God and our oneness with Him?

PSST Section 3: How does Jesus know “letters, having never learned?” What does this reveal about the process of learning? What is more important than knowing God’s doctrine?
What is the source of true intelligence? Think back to the Golden Text – how does the oneness of God and Christ relate to our expression of and growth in wisdom/intelligence?
How can all of this apply immediately to our work in school?

PSST Section 4: Do your students understand Jesus’ office and purpose? What was his role, as the Christ? What role do we play, and how does the office of the Christ relate to us?
Does it concern your students to hear that Jesus does not spare us “one individual experience”? How can we find comfort in our discipleship under Jesus?
What is it that we are truly sacrificing as we grow closer to God?

PSST Section 5: How do your students relate to Jesus’ crucifixion and ascension?
Is there any doubt in them about the truth to this account? What is the purpose of all the witnesses noted in 1 Corinthians (B16)? How do these witnesses impact our view, and why is it so critical for us to acknowledge Jesus’ crucifixion? (Read beyond the citations on p. 497 to find our Fifth Tenet). What role does the crucifixion and ascension play in our atonement?

PSST Section 6: What is our part in the at-one-ment with Truth and Love?
