P.S.S.T. Golden Text (GT): “The hour is come” … “He is risen!”
“The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified…. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:23,46

We could begin this Lesson with the phrase, “He is risen!”

Those words are attributed to the early Christians as a means of identifying to each other as followers of Jesus Christ, as witness to one of the greatest feats of all time.

What does it mean to your students that Jesus is identified as glorified and as a bringer of light to the world? What was that light and how was it like the dawn of resurrection morning?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading (RR) – Not only is Jesus the light of the world, but he declared in Matthew 5:14, “Ye are the light of the world.” Who, me? How am I letting the light of Truth shine through me? How am I a transparency for Truth? How am I removing cloudy thinking or cobwebs in thought so that Truth shines through?

See Science & Health 295:19-22: “The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality — much error — in order to become a better transparency for Truth.”

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – The direction for being a transparency for Truth is also given in citation B1 (Romans 12:2), “…be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

So, what is God’s will for you? That you be a light of the world. If you are questioning this directive, then read citation S2 (SH 516:9-10), “God fashions all things, after His own likeness.”

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – You are an influencer for good. Don’t believe anything else.

Read together citation S8 (SH 192:21): “Your influence for good depends upon the weight you throw into the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable. Evil is not power. It is a mockery of strength, which erelong betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise.”

How was David in the Scripture story in citation B5 portrayed as a transparency for Truth? What was the result of David’s clarity of thinking? Whenever we have seeming giants or formidable claims of evil suggested to us, we too can select one of those smooth stones (qualities of Truth) to come to our aid so that we, like David – and like Jesus – may prevail. This is our own resurrection morning.

Read citations S11 and S12 (SH 406:20-25 & SH 380:4).

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Not only was Jesus the light of the world, but he beheld that light in others.
See what Mary Baker Eddy says about Jesus’ beholding in citation S13 (SH 476:32-5): “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.”

Read together Hymn 543 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed here):

Hymn 543 & 221:

O Jesus, our dear Master, Your works, now understood, Reveal their full effulgence Through love and brotherhood.

Today Christ's precious Science Your healing power makes plain:

With joy may all obey you And cast out sin and pain.

The Christ, eternal manhood, As God's own Son beloved, A tender ever-presence Within each heart is proved.

O God, our Father-Mother, Your name we see expressed

By man, who in Your Science Is perfect, holy, blessed.

O Science, God-sent message To tired humanity, You are Love's revelation Of Truth that makes us free.

Your kingdom, God, within us Shows forth Love's sweet control.

God's idea, man, rejoices; We know the reign of Soul.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Answer your calling to “prove what God is and what He does for man.”

Mary Baker Eddy states Jesus’ mission to the world in these words in citation S19 (SH 26:10): “His mission was to reveal the Science of celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does for man.”

Two key elements are included in that statement which speaks of our own ability and call to action as light of the world:

  • Proving what God is, and
  • What He does for man

This statement also assures that we are never alone, on our own, but always with God as our light, showing the way.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Truth as light shines thru you, illumines the path, & assures you won’t stumble.
Read the scripture passages in this section. What do the experiences of Judas and Jesus prove? “…error yields to Truth” (S26, SH 329:26).

The Truth as light shines through you, illumines the path, and assures you will not stumble.

See also John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

P.S.S.T. Section 6 Jesus’ resurrection and ascension were two of the most profound acts of his life. What light did they throw on our own lives?

Citation S29 (SH 292:31) states: “In his resurrection and ascension, Jesus showed that a mortal man is not the real essence of manhood, and that this unreal material mortality disappears in presence of the reality.”

Thus, we should strive for the following:

  • To be a light for the world
  • To be a transparency for Truth
  • To have it said of us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
