Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced”
for May 27-June 2, 2019

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – How are you defined in the Golden Text? Even as you look at these as personal descriptors, how can they also apply to your city or country, or to citizens of the world? Do you feel chosen? Do you know there is no one else like you? Do you know that no one can take your place or fulfill what you are called upon to do, to accomplish?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Is there a power outside of God, Good?

What is the prayer of affirmation in Psalm 27:1?

Specifically, what is this a counterfact of?

  • Light is counterfact to darkness
  • Salvation is counterfact to damnation
  • Love is counterfact to fear
  • Strength is counterfact to weakness
  • Life is counterfact to death, or the cessation of existence

Look to the rest of the Responsive Reading. What are other counterfacts that provide blessed assurance that you are watched over, beloved and protected?

  • No fear in the face of seeming obstacles
  • Confident in the fact that God has my back, and is in front leading me too
  • I am beautiful in God’s sight
  • God is round about me
  • Singing is a way to dispel fears
  • I can only see and experience good

Read together Hymn 169 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words follow).

Hymn 169

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,

Lead Thou me on;

The night is dark, and I am far from home,

Lead Thou me on.

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see

The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou

Shouldst lead me on;

I loved to choose and see my path; but now

Lead Thou me on.

I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,

Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still

Will lead me on

O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till

The night is gone,

And with the morn those angel faces smile,

Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.

(Hymn. 169:1–3)

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – This is an interesting title/subject for this week’s lesson. Even though it may sound like “old-time” language, it is still relevant today. Help students define certain terms:

  • Necromancy
  • The difference between Ancient and Modern
  • Alias
  • Mesmerism
  • Hypnotism
  • Denounced (probably the most important word in the subject)

How can one denounce the suggestions coming today from those other terms? Read in Science & Health 201:17 and 495:25-496:19 (printed here).

“The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love. Christian perfection is won on no other basis.”

(SH 201:17)

“Question. — How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?

“Answer. — Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love. In the Science of Mind, you will soon ascertain that error cannot destroy error. You will also learn that in Science there is no transfer of evil suggestions from one mortal to another, for there is but one Mind, and this ever-present omnipotent Mind is reflected by man and governs the entire universe. You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself.

“We all must learn that Life is God. Ask yourself: Am I living the life that approaches the supreme good? Am I demonstrating the healing power of Truth and Love? If so, then the way will grow brighter ‘unto the perfect day.’ Your fruits will prove what the understanding of God brings to man. Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.”

(SH 495:25–19)

Is God the Great Unknown? Can you know God and what She has prepared for you? What questions arise when reading the S&H portion of Section 1?

  • What is the light of ever-present love? How can I see and use this light?
  • Is there a power other than God? What does omnipotence mean?
  • What enslaves man? Is it a real power or a belief only? How does mesmerism or hypnotism act as enslaving devices?
  • What does suppositional mean?
  • Can someone else’s thought do you harm?
  • If God is everywhere, where is or can be the opposite of God? Trick question. Here is an opportunity to denounce the belief in devil, evil, sin, sickness, disease, death.
  • Christian Science attributes all power to God.

Read together Hymn 10 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words follow).

Hymn 10

All power is given unto our Lord,

On Him we place reliance;

With truth from out His sacred word

We bid our foes defiance.

With Him we shall prevail,

Whatever may assail;

He is our shield and tower,

Almighty is His power;

His kingdom is forever.

Rejoice, ye people, praise His name,

His care doth e'er surround us.

His love to error's thralldom came,

And from its chains unbound us.

Our Lord is God alone,

No other power we own;

No other voice we heed,

No other help we need;

His kingdom is forever.

O then give thanks to God on high,

Who life to all is giving;

The hosts of death before Him fly,

In Him we all are living.

Then let us know no fear,

Our King is ever near;

Our stay and fortress strong,

Our strength, our hope, our song;

His kingdom is forever.

(Hymn. 10:1–3)

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – What is the great command in citation B6? Fret not – fear not.

What was the decree of Cyrus the King in citation B7? Why was this an important decree? This enabled the children of Israel to return to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon. One king, Cyrus, overthrowing a decree of a previous king, Nebuchadnezzar. How does this story speak to the rulers of man and their decrees being temporary and not able to stand when the truth of man’s freedom is declared and held to?

Read citation S8. Why is Christian Science an excellent aid in showing mankind his freedom from mesmerism and hypnotism, which can only enslave man? What are counterfacts in citation S10 to give you aid?

  • Good counterfacts evil
  • Watching counterfacts thieves and murderers
  • Virtue and truth counterfact evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – There are more counterfacts in B10:

  • Grace and humility counterfact pride
  • Drawing nigh to God counterfacts belief in the devil or evil

Even with the passing of the Kingdom of Persia from Cyrus to Darius, the people were permitted to continue the building of the temple at Jerusalem. What does this story indicate of the permanency of truth in the face of evil intentions or those in opposition to God’s will?

Read what Christian Science declares in citation S11.

There is a good memorization opportunity in citation S16.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Ask students to share experiences where they have overcome modern-day mesmerism or hypnotism.

Read together citation S20. How does this sound like the Scientific Statement of Being found in SH 468:8-15?

“Question. — What is the scientific statement of being?

“Answer. — There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.”

(SH 468:8–15)

What role does thinking play in how we see and experience circumstances? Can two people look at the same thing and come to different conclusions? Can you see why it is important to be informed by Mind, God, Good, rather than the physical senses?

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – What does it mean to be like-minded, as stated in citation B19? What is the result when God, Mind, Good is our mind? How is listening to God a counterfact to human will? How can you know when it is God speaking and not your or someone else’s will?

Read together in SH 323:6:

“Through the wholesome chastisements of Love, we are helped onward in the march towards righteousness, peace, and purity, which are the landmarks of Science. Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause, — wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured, and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory.”

(SH 323:6-12)

What does it mean to pause and wait on God?

Read also SH 323:28-4:

“The effects of Christian Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the ‘still, small voice’ of Truth uttering itself. We are either turning away from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going up higher. Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea. Gladness to leave the false landmarks and joy to see them disappear, — this disposition helps to precipitate the ultimate harmony.”

(SH 323:28–4)

What does citation B20 tell us? “…God is not the author of confusion, but of peace….” This is a direct counterfact to the claim of “I don’t know what to do.”

Mary Baker Eddy thought this idea so important that she provided Tenet #6 for our prayer to “Let this Mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” See SH 497:24:

“6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.”

(SH 497:24)

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – No harm can come to you as followers of good.

What are counterfacts in citation S29:

  • One must fulfill one’s mission without timidity or dissimulation (just like the Children of Israel when building the temple or the wall at Jerusalem)
  • Your work is to be done unselfishly
  • The foundational truths taught in Christian Science counterfact pride, prejudice, bigotry, and envy
  • Your foundation, your rock is Christ.

Read together the spiritual definition of Christ in SH 583:10:

“Christ. The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.”

(SH 583:10)
