INTRODUCTION

Perhaps your students desire an answer to the question, “Who am I?” as it relates to the subject of this week’s Lesson. Share with them an answer provided by Mary Baker Eddy in Miscellany 165:18:

“Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.”

Let’s explore further your true nature as provided in this Lesson-Sermon topic.

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text (GT)/Genesis 1:26,27: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

Three times is the word “image” used in the Golden Text. What is an image? What is another word for image? Maybe reflection. In image or reflection there is an original and that which is like the original. So, who is your originator, and who are you like? See the answer in the GT as to who is speaking: “God said.”

Responsive Reading (RR)/Ps 1:1-3,6; Deut. 4:23; Deut.5:7-9,33.

How might you be defined when reading the RR?

  • You meditate on the law of originator and reflection
  • You are like a tree planted by the river of water
  • All that you do shall prosper
  • You are the image of God
  • You act according to God’s commands
  • It is well with you, you possess only good

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – What is your duty? In fact, as image or reflection you can only do what the original does. So in order to know your duty one should study the original, the originator, who is God.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – What does God originate, what does God see? Everything, and it is good.

Can there be anything else outside of everything? You are therefore included in “every thing.”

How important is it to be awake to good and to good as the only thing, and good as everything?
This is a law and you are governed by this law. Where in the Scripture are you first informed about your goodness, your true nature? Genesis, chapter 1 – see verses 26,27, and 31.

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – Read together citation S11/Science & Health 515:25-12 to see a statement about reflection. Remember, there is no separation between originator and reflection, simultaneity is their order.

Read together Hymn 135 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words provided here):

Hymn 135
I know no life divided, O Lord of life, from Thee;
In Thee is life provided For all mankind and me:
I know no death, O Father, Because I live in Thee;
Thy life it is that frees us From death eternally.

I fear no tribulation, Since, whatsoe’er it be,
It makes no separation Between my Lord and me:
Since Thou, my God and Father, Dost claim me as Thine own,
I richly shall inherit All good, from Thee alone.

What is the great truth as stated in citation S15/200:16? Here is another nice word for definition: incontrovertible.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – Does God originate everything and that all good, and then create both good and evil? How can that possibly be? One is true and one is a lie about that which is true.
Which is true? Reason it out — either everything being good is true, or it is not –- which is it?

How did Jesus prove one of them to be true? By healing. See cit. B11/Matthew 8:14-16.
Perhaps this is why healing is so important to Christian Scientists. Healings prove the allness of good only.

What does it mean in cit. B13/Hebrews 1:1-3,9, that you are anointed with oil?
See the spiritual definition of “oil” in Science & Health 592:25.
What qualities are mentioned in that definition that align with who you are and what you are able to do?  Charity, gentleness, prayer, inspiration.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – What do you think it means to put off the old man and put on the new man as stated in cit. B14/Eph. 4? Remember, there’s only one man & that one good, as his originator is good.

Therefore, the call is to shift thought away from a belief in two creations, one good and one bad, to the fact of only one creation, and that is good, everywhere and for evermore. You are maintained by your originator, as stated in cit. S22/151:23.
What are you called upon to do? “…see and acknowledge this fact,…” What fact is it? One God, one originator, one man in God’s image and likeness, always and forever good. What follows this fact, this truth? Peace. So if you desire peace in your life and in your world, hold to this fact.

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – Now recall some key words in this Lesson: image, good, forever, only one truth, reflection. The love that God has for that which he created is so powerful that nothing can set it aside. Love creates only good, only that which is loving, caring, supportive. Therefore, you can afford to be and do good only.

P.S.S.T.  Section 7 – From where does your satisfaction come? Refer again to Genesis chapter 1, verse 31. Remember to know the image, look to and study the originator. Good in the beginning and good in everything, and only good.

See Science & Health 548:6 (S30), “We see that man has never lost his spiritual estate and his eternal harmony.”
