P.S.S.T.   – Pray each day to be led of the spirit in all your actions and decisions
ossible Sunday School Topics (PSSTs) for The Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lesson:

for September 11-17, 2023

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S., for CedarS Camps   •   314-308-1059

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text (GT)/Proverbs 23:5 – “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?”

The scripture passage from Proverbs asks a significant question.
Basically, what are you looking at or seeing to tell you the truth?
Put another way – Do you believe what you see, or do you see what you believe?
As Christian Scientists, we place great stock in understanding, in knowledge, in study, in demonstration. See Science & Health 195:19.

“Academics of the right sort are requisite. Observation, invention, study, and original thought are expansive and should promote the growth of mortal mind out of itself, out of all that is mortal.”

Is that also your desire, to grow in understanding beyond that which is material or mental?

Responsive Reading (RR)/Ecclesiastes 1:1,2; Eccl.2:4-8,10,11,26; John 6:63

The Responsive Reading raises other questions –

  • Where do we put our faith?
  • What do we look to for growth?
  • How do we measure the worth of our lives?
  • Is my life valuable because of the stuff I possess, or the “toys” I have?

What does the scripture in Proverbs 4:7 tell us? “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Get the things of the Spirit, not of the flesh.

Read together in the RR/John 6:63, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.”

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – Do you pray each day to be led of the spirit in all your actions and decisions?
Read together Hymn 90 or 488 from the Christian Science Hymnal, as an example of such prayer. (words included here)

Hymn 90 (488)

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land:
I am Thine, and Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven! Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore.

Open is the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing waters flow;
And the fiery cloudy pillar
Leads me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer! Strong Deliverer!
Still Thou art my strength and shield.

See also Mary Baker Eddy’s prayers for the big children and to the little children,
in Poems 69:1-13 (provided here):

A Verse

Mother’s New Year Gift to the Little Children

Father-Mother God,
Loving me, —

Guard me when I sleep;
Guide my little feet
Up to Thee.

To the Big Children

Father-Mother good, lovingly
Thee I seek, —

Patient, meek,
In the way Thou hast, —
Be it slow or fast,
Up to Thee.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – The tower of Babel in this section is a symbol of placing one’s hopes, desires, dreams, aspirations on a material basis. This basis is defined in citation S4/581:17-22:

  • A kingdom divided against itself
  • Material knowledge
  • False knowledge
  • Evidence obtained from the five corporeal senses
  • Confusion and downfall

Where is it you desire to go or to be led? To God and His ideas, or to matter and the tower of Babel?

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – Who leads you? Who’s got your back? See cit. B7/Matt.19:26, “with God all things are possible.”

Read also Psalm 23. Not only is this a prayer but it is a law. So, when you are tempted to look to matter or mortality to tell you how much of a man you are, stand still and cling to your Creator.
Here is a good memory opportunity in cit. S14/495:14-20. See also Isaiah 65:24.

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – By seeking wisdom and understanding from Spirit, not only is your life enriched but you will “never see death” as is stated in citation S15/429:31-9. Do you desire such advancement?

Think about David and Goliath in 1st Samuel 17.
How did David prepare for the battle? Did he use the armor provided by King Saul?
No, what did he use? What do the five smooth stones represent? Spiritual qualities, not material stuff.
See also citation S17/14:12-18.
Like David, you too should “Become conscious for a single moment that life and intelligence are purely spiritual.”

Here is another prayer treatment found in Hymn 304 from the Christian Science Hymnal (words provided here):

Hymn 304 (plus 30-309, 573-576)

Shepherd, show me how to go
O’er the hillside steep,
How to gather, how to sow,—
How to feed Thy sheep;
I will listen for Thy voice,
Lest my footsteps stray;
I will follow and rejoice
All the rugged way.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will,
Wound the callous breast,
Make self-righteousness be still,
Break earth’s stupid rest.
Strangers on a barren shore,
Lab’ring long and lone,
We would enter by the door,
And Thou know’st Thine own;

So, when day grows dark and cold,
Tear or triumph harms,
Lead Thy lambkins to the fold,
Take them in Thine arms;
Feed the hungry, heal the heart,
Till the morning’s beam;
White as wool, ere they depart,
Shepherd, wash them clean.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? What is the direction/ guidance given by Jesus to his disciples, to you, in citation B13/Luke 9:1-4?

Here is another great memory opportunity in citation S18/139:4-5, “From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter.”

Make a commitment to read a portion of the scriptures each day for your guidance to live away from matter into Spirit.

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – As a scientist, you are in the proving business – the demonstration business. Why? We deal with facts, not suppositions. See citation S23/492:3-4, “For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence.” So, we put into practice a life lived in Spirit not matter, like David did, like Christ Jesus did, like Mary Baker Eddy did.

Read together citation S25/340:4-12. Then go back to the Golden Text and answer the question posed there.

Answer as did Joshua in Joshua 24:15, “…choose you this day whom ye will serve; … as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” That means we will look to and serve Spirit, not things material.
