[A note to let the need be known: CedarS is ~1/3 of the way toward meeting
a year-end, $25k Maintenance Musts Challenge Grant… about $16k to go]

Late fall in Germany can be rather bleak.  Most of the leaves are off the trees, the weather is often damp, cool, (or cold), often gray and overcast during the day; and it is dark by 4:30 or 5:00 p.m.  Ugh!   It can be quite similar in the entire northern hemisphere. And many folks find it to be a depressing time.  So what is to be done?  Do we wait for snow to brighten the landscape?  Do we all crawl into the corner with our blanket and “wait” for spring?

Well, I’ve got news for you.  It is already spring in many parts of the world.  Yippee!  Here we come Brazil, Australia, Ghana!  Any other options?  Well, if you can’t afford the plane fare to Rio, how about a wonderful trip in Soul.  A satisfying, peaceful, comforting trip into the beautiful truth, that Soul, God is ever-present and ever-reflected all around.  Even when it appears bleak and dark, there is a beautiful reflection of Soul’s glory just waiting to inspire you.  This week’s Bible Lesson is just full of reflections of Soul that inspire, renew, and encourage.

Reflected Light does encourage us on our way.  For example, even though it was already dark at 5 p.m. yesterday, my family and I bundled up and headed out for a walk.  We drove to a favorite spot in the woods and fields near our airport.   And as we arrived at the scene we realized that the full moon was ready to emerge from the cloud cover.  I can hardly communicate how holy, peaceful and Soulful it was to walk along, little Martha grasping my hand, and the whole family enjoying our moonlight stroll.  And even the early darkness was a blessing because after our walk there was still time for bath time and dinner, all before 7 p.m.

Are things a little dark, a little bleak, a little gray for you at the moment?  Just wait till you discover the reflections of Soul in this week’s Bible Lesson.  You are going to love how Soul (your Father-Mother) is just waiting to encourage and inspire you!

Golden Text:  1 Thessalonians 5:23
We might say that this week’s lesson is about a little hope for our endeavors.  Hang in there.  You are not alone.  The Golden Text is from Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians and it is indeed encouraging.  I love Phillips translation of the verse.

“May the God of peace make you holy through and through.  May you be kept in soul and mind and body in spotless integrity until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is utterly faithful and he will finish what he has set out to do.”    J.B. Phillips, 1 Thes. 5:23

The Responsive Reading: Romans 13:1 (to :), 12 (to :), 13, 14; 8:1, 5 (to ;), 9, 11–14
Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians includes these verses of encouragement from Romans chapters 13 and 8.  We are assured that for those “in Christ Jesus,” and “in the Spirit” there is no condemnation.  Paul was quite a good cheerleader for early Christians.  This introduction to the theme of the lesson is just a little bit like one of the beloved fall “Pep Rallies” we have in America, just before the big game.  Let’s get “in the Spirit” and learn from all the wonderful, encouraging examples in the lesson.

Section 1 – Soul reflected in creation, including man.
Yes, Christian Science does unfold an entirely different truth than the commonly held belief of man having an “indwelling” soul or spirit.  This section of the lesson explains the foundational concept of divine Science that man “reflects” Soul in life.  And it also discounts the common belief of life being infused or breathed into matter.

For example, citation S-5 states:  “Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love.  Soul is the substance, Life, and Intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter.  Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit….. Man is the expression of Soul.” (477:20-26)

The inspiring study tool, “My Bible Lesson,” published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, (christianscience.com/biblelessons/mybiblelesson)  includes a note pointing to an explanation by Mary Baker Eddy on this subject.  It is a reference to her book, Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 75-76.  Topic, “Why do you insist that there is but one Soul, and that Soul is not in the body?”

I loved the sense I got through this section that I am God’s.  He has called me by name. (B-1) I am His and I belong to Him.  Even though matter and material sensation may try to stake a claim on me, I am Soul’s reflection. (S-5)

Section 2 – Walk in the Spirit and don’t let the “body” of knowledge fool you.
Our favorite cheerleader in Christian practice, the Apostle Paul, encourages his friend, Timothy in citation B-7: ‘O, Timothy, guard most carefully your divine commission. Avoid the Godless mixture of contradictory notions which is falsely known as “knowledge”— some have followed it and lost their faith.”  (I Timothy 6:20 keep, 21)

The citations from Science and Health in this section (S-6 – S-9) show the importance of emerging from the cumulative knowledge of mortal sense and mortal belief.  Theories and knowledge based on material sense would “hide” God from us.  (S-6) ”The error, which says that Soul is in body, Mind is in matter, and good is in evil, must unsay it and cease from such utterances; else God will continue to be hidden from humanity…” (204:30)

As I worked on this MET a friend from England called; we spoke about looking to Spirit and not to body.  Any “body”.  I was reminded that my mom’s Christian Science teacher, Mary Sands Lee, had found Christian Science through her aspiring work as a young actress.  She had been reading Science and Health.  She came to a page where Mrs. Eddy wrote about the remedy for fatigue, Science and Health, page 218.  “You do not say a wheel is fatigued; and yet the body is as material as the wheel.”

Mrs. Lee lived in Chicago and when the hot summer days came along the family would always go to their house on Lake Michigan.  Usually the family servants would open up the house for the summer time.  Young Mary arrived at the house and there were no servants to be seen.  So she began the work of cleaning and opening the house.  As she worked she thought of that line she had just read from Science and Health.  And she repeated to herself, “I can no more get tired than a wheel.”  Mary was completely unaccustomed to physical labor since she had her entire life been told she had a heart condition.  On this day she listened to the spiritual ideas that came to her and she worked.  When their long time family maid arrived she exclaimed, “Mary, what has happened to you?”  It seemed that Mary’s rosy cheeks and healthy appearance was something this maid had never seen before.  Mary had been completely healed.

Our beloved Executive Director, Warren, often shares with us when we are just a little “fatigued” that we need to just go to the “COT.”  Now this is not a comfy little bed that we all keep near us, but it is the “cot” Mrs. Eddy refers to in Science and Health and where we find our relief from fatigue.  Warren’s favorite “c.o.T.” is the “consciousness of Truth.”  As our Leader writes on page 218 of Science and Health.  “The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness.”

Citation (S-9) describes what is part of this c.o.T. – and what is not:  “We must destroy the false belief that life and intelligence are in matter, and plant ourselves upon what is pure and perfect.  Paul said, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”  Sooner or later we shall learn that the fetters [handcuffs] of man’s finite capacity are forged by the illusion that he lives in body instead of in Soul, in matter instead of in Spirit.” (223) [Warren will bring handcuffs to Sunday School to illustrate this idea along with a physical key and a couple of key ideas from the Key to the Scriptures that unlock limited capabilities.]

Section 3 – Joseph, an example of integrity not influenced by anybody or any body.
“But, but, he made me do it!!”  Oh the times I can remember from childhood when I tried to blame someone else for my calamities or predicaments.  What freedom comes into our lives when we realize that we each choose our path, independent of the influences of others!  We learn to maintain our own integrity.

And beloved Joseph, in Genesis 39 gives us an inspiring example. (B-9)  We are told that his boss’s wife sought continually to entrap or ensnare him in unethical, immoral behavior. He continued to resist.  And even though he appeared to have suffered because of her anger, he had maintained his integrity.  Eventually that maintaining of his integrity ended up saving the entire nation of Egypt and all of Joseph’s family.

The Science and Health citations, (S-10) to (S-14), help us understand the significance of Joseph’s resistance to matter’s temptations.  Submitting to the taunts and temptations of matter and material sense does not bring us any good.  Submitting to the Daytime Soap Opera, Nighttime Soap Opera, or Telenovela mentality does not bring happiness, fulfillment, or success.

As citation (S-10 ) asks: “Do you say the time has not yet come in which to recognize Soul as substantial and able to control the body?” (92:32–2)

Citation (S-11) asserts:  “Evil is not supreme; good is not helpless; nor are the so-called laws of matter primary, and the law of Spirit secondary.  Body is not first and Soul last, nor is evil mightier than good.” (207:10–13, 15–16)

Section 4 – Rise up to practice the Science of Soul.
It is not always the easiest thing to rise above prevailing beliefs and theories.  Sometimes something that is not true, never has been true, and will never be true is believed.  And it is not always easy to rise above the belief.

Ptolemy.   An example is the theory of the Alexandrian Greek, Ptolemy.  He presented a “geocentric” theory of how the planets and stars related to each other.  His theory was simply that earth was the center of it all.  And in many circles that theory remained in effect for about 1400 years.  It was the prevailing and accepted theory.  But it was never true.

Nicolaus Copernicus was a mathematician and astronomer born in Poland in 1473 who formulated a heliocentric model of the universe which placed the Sun, rather than the earth at the center.  His book presenting this theory was published shortly before his death in 1543. And it is considered a major event in the history of science.

Jesus.  Approximately 2,000 years ago a young man lived that healed every form of sickness that was presented to him.  The lame walked, the blind saw, the dead were raised.  He often commanded that those being healed “rise up.”  He was identified and accepted by many as the Son of God, the Savior, the promised Messiah.

Mary Baker Eddy.  Mary Baker Eddy, who walked the globe between 1822 and 1910, discovered and practiced a Science based on the teachings of Christ Jesus. She taught this Christian Science as she called it to others.  And with this Science she and her students, including those today, heal the sick according to the method used by Christ Jesus.

In this section of the lesson she explains Jesus’ healing as follows:
“The material senses’ reversal of the Science of Soul was practically exposed nineteen hundred years ago by the demonstrations of Jesus; yet these so-called senses still make mortal mind tributary to mortal body, and ordain certain sections of matter, such as brain and nerves, as the seats of pain and pleasure, from which matter reports to this so-called mind its status of happiness or misery.  Temporal life is a false sense of existence… Our theories make the same mistake regarding Soul and body that Ptolemy made regarding the solar system.  They insist that soul is in body and mind therefore tributary to matter.” (S-16, 122:7, 27–32)

Citation (S-18) continues: “The Science Jesus taught and lived must triumph overall material beliefs about life, substance, and intelligence, and the multitudinous errors growing from such beliefs.” (43:28)

Section 5 – Letting go of the false sense of Soul, reveals Life eternal.
Paul states in I Corinthians 15:26, 57: “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (B- 13)

The Psalmist agrees:  “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” (B-16, Ps. 118:17)

[Science and Health jumps fully aboard the bandwagon of proclaiming man’s immortality in these citations:]
“Only by losing the false sense of Soul can we gain the eternal unfolding of Life as immortality brought to light.” (S-19) | 335:22

“The educated belief that Soul is in the body causes mortals to regard death as a friend, as a stepping-stone out of mortality into immortality and bliss.  The Bible calls death an enemy, and Jesus overcame death and the grave instead of yielding to them.  He was “the way.” To him, therefore, death was not the threshold over which he must pass into living glory.” (S-20, 39:10)

What is the danger of false theories?  Isn’t it that sometimes people are ready to see an option based on the false theory?  Misguided they make a decision and find themselves not any bettered.  This is not just a recent phenomenon.  Even the Psalmist rose up to embrace the certainty that he was going to make it.  Perhaps he had faced fears, doubts, darkness, depression that made him think he couldn’t make it, but then a new spirit rose in his thoughts when he wrote, “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.”

Is this perhaps similar to Mary Baker Eddy’s experience which she describes in her book, Miscellaneous Writings on page 24:  “St. Paul writes: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” This knowledge came to me in an hour of great need; and I give it to you as death-bed testimony to the daystar that dawned on the night of material sense. This knowledge is practical, for it wrought my immediate recovery from an injury caused by an accident, and pronounced fatal by the physicians. On the third day thereafter, I called for my Bible, and opened it at Matthew ix. 2. As I read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after was in better health than I had before enjoyed. That short experience included a glimpse of the great fact that I have since tried to make plain to others, namely, Life in and of Spirit; this Life being the sole reality of existence. “

Section 6 – Jesus rose from the grave and gave evidence of Life eternal.
Doesn’t this wonderful proof that our Master offered speak to us all?  Look what is possible with the understanding of God and our relationship to Him and His Christ!  This section shares with us the experiences of Mary Magdalene speaking with her risen Master, the disciples eating with him, and then Thomas who was given indisputable truth that his Master had indeed risen.

In Science and Health we read, “Life is the law of Soul, even the law of the spirit of Truth, and Soul is never without its representative.  Man’s individual being can no more die nor disappear in unconsciousness than can Soul, for both are immortal. The belief that existence is contingent on matter must be met and mastered by Science, before Life can be understood and harmony obtained.” (S-25, 427:2–7, 9)

Quite simply put: “We all must learn that Life is God.”  (S-26, 496:9)

In a recent MET, there was a testimony shared about the prayers that raised a beloved pet rabbit.   [Warren: At the end of camp one summer our daughter’s pet rabbit, Jane, was stiff, cold, and not breathing.  Since the raising of Lazarus was in the lesson that week, Holly asked if we could pray for Jane on the way home, rather than bury her.  So with all the fervor, conviction and expectancy of a summer full of witnessing to God’s love and laws of healing in action, our whole family started the drive home with a dead rabbit. We sang and prayed and within an hour witnessed to a "resurrection rabbit" who not only was fully restored to life, but also became a cuddly pet instead of a biting and attacking animal.]

Section 7 – Get out of the bleachers and join the game!
This week’s Bible Lesson is about a Science of Soul that is really a completely new way of seeing the universe.  It is and can be even more revolutionary than the change of belief about the stars and planets revolving around the earth.  Yes, even though that false belief was the standard knowledge for hundreds of years, it was never the Truth.

Well, let’s see what our favorite cheerleader has to say on this one.

Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”  (B-22, Romans 12:1)

And he encouraged the Christians in Colossae: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.   Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” (B-23, Col. 3:1, 2, 24)

And then he cheered along the Christians in Thessalonica: “hold fast that which is good.  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  (B-24, I Thes. 5:21, 23)

Why that is our Golden Text again, right?  We have gone full circle.  As Phillips translation put it, May the God of peace make you holy through and through. May you be kept in soul and mind and body in spotless integrity until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is utterly faithful and he will finish what he has set out to do.”    (J.B. Phillips New Testament)

As Mrs. Eddy puts it, “Paul had a clear sense of the demands of Truth upon mortals physically and spiritually, when he said: “Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” The time cometh when the spiritual origin of man, the divine Science which ushered Jesus into human presence, will be understood and demonstrated.” (S- 27, 325:20–24, 26)

And as they say, “There is no time like the present.”   You are going to love how Soul (your Father-Mother) is just waiting to encourage and inspire you!
