Overview: References to court and law and wisdom run throughout this week’s Lesson. It brings out that there really is only one law — the law of Spirit. Although it seems that we can suffer as a result of breaking a so-called law of matter, this verdict is overturned as we discover that matter is actually just a “belief”; a “human concept;” an “error of statement” and “there is no material truth” — so no material law. God’s wisdom reveals what is true and what isn’t. As we take the case to the court of Spirit, we are proclaimed innocent, and there is no more suffering.

The Golden Text this week, from Psalm 84:2 expresses a yearning on the part of the psalmist to be in the presence of the “living God”. According to my Thomas Nelson Study Bible, “living God” is a distinction reserved for the God who created the universe, provides salvation for His people, and lives forever. All other ‘gods’ are nonentities. What we call matter — including its supposititious law — is indeed one of those “nonentities” — powerless to have any influence over us and our world.

The Responsive Reading has a lot to say about the contrast between God’s law and “another law” which, Paul saw as “warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.” If we think of sin as a belief of separation from God — or missing the mark — this “law of sin” would be anything that doesn’t correspond to God’s harmony. I suspect most of us have felt that tug before — between the law of good and the so-called law of evil; the law of God and the so-called law of matter, presenting itself in things like bad choices, anger, frustration, despair, fear, or bodily ailments. I certainly have. But, Paul offers an answer in his letter to the Corinthians — urging them (and us) — to make decisions regarding what to accept and what to reject on the basis of the source of the thought. Does it spring from the “wisdom of men” or the “power of God”? The first is fallible and changing, and should always be questioned … the other is permanent, full of promise, and deserving of reliance, regardless of physical evidence, the testimony of the senses.

Section 1: Don’t be fooled by the testimony of the physical senses

We have a choice to make with every thought we think. Do we accept what the material senses are telling us — good or bad — as Paul asks in II Corinthians 10, verse 7? OR do we lean on faith and our God-given understanding of spiritual reality to look through the outward appearances to see what God, Spirit, is revealing? We can’t actually see God, as such … anymore than we can see the wind. But, we CAN see evidence of God’s presence as we focus on the spiritual ideas that come from God … just as we see evidence of the wind through the impact it has on our surroundings. Spirit expresses itself as thought. And that thought is limitless and always good. Material things are forever limited, and subject to discord and destruction. We must choose what view to accept. What we call matter is, as Mary Baker Eddy says on page 277 of Science and Health, “a human concept; an error of statement.”

In order to see things correctly, we need to take what we see and translate it into thoughts that are eternal and harmonious. For instance, we see a gathering of people, a forest of trees, or a neighborhood of homes. Materially speaking they are subject to conflict, discord, and destruction. But, spiritually translated they are expressions of qualities such as sincerity, beauty, growth, shelter, and comfort — qualities that can’t be touched by material conditions. As so many testimonies and articles from the Christian Science periodicals have verified, holding to a correct concept of a situation has resulted either in the preservation of peace, calm, and integrity, or the restoration of it. Nothing can be lost (including health) when it is understood that substance is spiritual — constituted of the idea of unchanging and eternal Mind. God has given us spiritual understanding in order to perceive an unlimited, spiritual view, rather than a limited, material one. Then we receive, as Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 2, verse 12, the spirit that “is of God” rather than “of the world.” Here we discover God’s unchanging law of good.

Section 2: God, as lawgiver, reveals matter to be only a belief

It’s understandable that Moses would question God about the likelihood of the Hebrews believing him when he told them that God had sent him to free them from the bondage of Egypt. But what Isaiah said about God in the 22nd verse of chapter 33 is so true … “the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.” As we’ve said before … it’s all about God and HIS power!! We are the expression of God’s authority, and God, Love, provides the means to do whatever we’ve been asked to do.

In Moses’ case he was shown in a practical way that Mind is in control. Moses’ rod changed in appearance to a serpent. And when Moses obediently and fearlessly picked it up by the tail (the most dangerous way to pick up a snake) its appearance changed back to a rod. It has occurred to me that the real value of this experience was twofold. (1) Moses received a direct, tangible, response from God to his concerns. (2) Moses glimpsed that matter (whether appearing good or bad) is not reliable. This was just the beginning of the display of God’s power that eventually led Pharaoh to release the Children of Israel. But, what it really showed was the supremacy of Mind and of the law of Spirit.

As we read on page 321 of our Science and Health textbook, regarding Moses’ experience, “Matter was shown to be a belief only.” A belief of discord can’t stand up to the opposing law of harmony. I’m sure Moses was comforted and strengthened by these examples as he went on to face challenge after challenge. Similarly, we can be comforted and encouraged in the face of what appear to be challenges as we remember examples of God’s care that either we have experienced in the past (large or small) or those that others have experienced.

Law is law and can be trusted. The key is shifting our view from the standpoint of matter to Spirit. As we continue to look “away from matter to Mind as the cause of every effect” as Mary Baker Eddy states on page 268 of Science and Health, we can be part of a revolution that will enable ourselves and our world to be freed from the limits that hold us in bondage.

Section 3: Jesus demonstrated the law of Truth

Jesus showed us that no so-called material law can withstand the ever-operating law of Christ, Truth. I love that not only did Jesus walk on the waves, but also Peter did, too — although briefly (Matt. 14: 25-31). Only Peter’s doubt and fear caused him to sink. Laws of physics had nothing to do with it! We may not feel a need to literally walk on water, but accepting God’s law as the only law, and fearlessly recognizing every so-called law of health or physics as powerless to limit or destroy, frees us to heal and be healed as Jesus illustrated.

It seems easy to feel overwhelmed by the many problems facing our world these days. The question is sometimes asked, “How could God allow — or more extreme — cause this hate, ill-health, death, and destruction?” The fact that Jesus healed every kind of ill — and overcame every kind of material law — is evidence, to me, that God neither causes nor permits the existence of evil. Rather, He sends his thoughts — His Christ — to free mankind from all oppression. Again … we have to shift our view and refuse to be mesmerized by what seems to be. As we pick up the serpent by the tail, so to speak, we’ll see it turn back into a rod. We are strengthened every time we face down a false belief — regardless of the form it masquerades as. God’s law is the only law!

As Science & Health states so succinctly on page 182, “discords have no support from nature or divine law, however much is said to the contrary.” Our job is to demonstrate the supremacy of spiritual law and mentally pounce on anything that would suggest opposition to this law of harmony. God raises us up “to walk on stormy seas” (as the song, You Raise Me Up tells us). We may not be literally walking on water, but we can follow Jesus’ teachings and “walk over, not into or with, the currents of matter, or mortal mind” as Mary Baker Eddy instructs us in Unity of Good, p. 11. It’s easy these days to get swept up in all of the junk bombarding us — political and social upheaval, fear of disease, natural disasters, etc. But, God’s law enables us to put every negative thought under our mental feet and still the storm — for all! That’s not ignoring problems – it’s healing them.

Section 4: Facing trials

The next three sections feature an allegory at the conclusion of the chapter, Christian Science Practice, in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. We have key parts of it in the Bible Lesson, but you can read it in its entirety on pages 430 – 442.

The allegory tells of a trial, “illustrative of the law of divine Mind and of the supposed laws of matter and hygiene …” In this section the scene is set. We’re told, “A man is charged with having committed liver-complaint.” Personal sense is the accuser, with false belief as the prosecuting attorney. There is no mention, here, of a defense attorney. And the jury — consisting of Mortal Minds, Materia Medica, Anatomy, Physiology, Hypnotism, Envy, Greed and Ingratitude — is certainly stacked against the accused. The prisoner is accused of staying up at night with a sick friend — which totally went against the edict of Health Laws. The consequences of such kindness, according to Governor Mortality, was for the accused to get sick and die. The jury issued a verdict of “Guilty”! Isn’t this also the verdict being imposed by mortal mind’s so-called health laws today? The great fear is that of contagion — the expectation that a dangerous virus can and will be transmitted from one person to another.

But, as we’re told on page 433 of Science and Health, “Christ, Truth, the spirit of Life and the friend of Mortal Man, can open wide those prison doors and set the captive free.” The execution must be delayed because “the prisoner is not guilty.”

Although I support the idea of wearing a mask and washing hands out of love and respect for others, we must do more as Christian Scientists. Because we love God and love our neighbor we must not let that guilty verdict stand. We must “delight in the law of God” as Paul told the Romans. (Rom. 7:22) The law of God is the law of harmony. And we must rejoice in the fact that that law applies to ourselves and to everyone. We must see the innocence of man and know that there can be no ill-effect from expressing love and care to others.

Section 5: Christian Science as defense attorney

As translated in the Amplified Bible, the second chapter of James, verse 8, promises that “If, … you are [really] fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself [that is, if you have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit]’ you are doing well.” As used here, well can mean not only excellently, but comfortable, and also recovering health. So, according to the law of God, we don’t need to be afraid, if and when there is a need to be of service to another, even if we are exposed to someone who appears to be sick with a so-called communicable disease.

Back to our allegory … through persistent effort, permission was obtained to re-try the case in the Court of Spirit, with Christian Science (the law of God) serving as counsel for the prisoner. The defense attorney argues that the former trial was “morally illegal.” It is argued that God, Spirit, is “Man’s only lawgiver.” (S-17, p. 434) It is repeated that the defendant, “Mortal Man” was obeying a “higher law” when he “helped his fellow-man”, and this behavior “should result in good to himself and others” — not in punishment. The argument is made that the only jurisdiction (or governing power) “the prisoner can submit to is that of Truth, Life, and Love.” Because these do not condemn him, it is argued that Judge Medicine shouldn’t condemn him either. It is argued that helping a sick friend was “acting within the limits of the divine law, and in obedience thereto.” (S19, p. 436)

So, when we are faced with the threat of any kind of penalty — whether from exposure to disease, injury, hate, intolerance, lack, or fear, we have to decide what law actually has jurisdiction over us. Taking the case to the Court of Spirit and letting Christian Science (the law of God) defend us, our innocence is maintained on the basis of “All is Mind and Mind’s idea.” (S20; 492) Because Mind is all, so-called matter is powerless to help or hurt. Fear is overcome, peace and health are restored.

Section 6: Freedom granted in the Court of Spirit

The conclusion of the trial allegory upholds the promise of Psalm 119. As the Amplified Bible translates verse 45, “And I will walk at liberty, For I seek and deeply long for Your precepts.” Taking every case to the Court of Spirit is all about seeking and longing to be freed by GOD’S law. In the case of the allegory, the closing remarks made by the defense attorney goes right to the Bible for authority, referencing Genesis 1: 26, Luke 10: 19, and John 8: 51. (S21; 437: 32-7) The Chief Justice of this Supreme Court of Spirit also draws his conclusion from the Bible, determining that “any so-called law, which undertakes to punish aught but sin, is null and void.” (S22; 440: 33)

What I especially love about the judge’s conclusion is how he identifies Personal Sense (the representative of matter) as a liar and “a murderer from the beginning.” And goes on to say that the Court of Spirit doesn’t even have trials for sickness. In that court, Man is found to be innocent of breaking physical laws “because there are no such laws.” (S23; 441:8-442:8) Which brings us back to the fact … there is ONE law … the law of Spirit. Matter, as false belief only, is not a law-giver.

Once Divine Love cast out the fear, mortal man found his inherent freedom. Notice … the innocence that is forever true for the Man of God’s creating is also found to be true in the human experience when the divine law of Christian Science reveals the testimony of personal sense, mortal mind, and matter to be bold-faced lies, and nothing but lies! (S24; 442: 11) “Governed by divine Love — by Spirit, not matter” we are “with the Lord” and “in obedience to the law of God” and we are free! (S25: 14:9)

Section 7: Hold your ground

Check out this translation of Galatians 5: 1 from the Contemporary English Version of the Bible, “Christ has set us free! This means we are really free. Now hold on to your freedom and don’t ever become slaves of the Law again.” I took a little liberty with verse 25. It says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” But I found it helpful to think, “Because we live in (are the image of) Spirit, then it is our divine right to also walk in the Spirit — be governed by Spirit as the only law.” The lesson concludes with Mary Baker Eddy reinforcing this idea on page 264 of the Christian Science textbook. She writes, “Spirit and its formations are the only realities of being.”

On page 390 of Science and Health we’re given some clues as to how to hold our ground and not be moved off of this position of freedom. We are to “Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit.” As we “blot out the images of mortal thought and its beliefs in sickness and sin,” the judge (Christ, Truth) delivers the verdict, “You are whole”! Notice the strength belongs to the spirit of Truth. We simply need to argue on the side of Truth and blot out every false belief. God, Spirit, is the authority and the power! We reflect and respond to it!
