Metaphysical Application Ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson on “Mind”

For the week of August 20 – 26, 2007

Prepared by Janet Hegarty, C.S. of St. Louis, MO

Editor’s Note: The following background information and application ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson for this week are offered primarily to help CedarS campers and staff (as well as friends) see and demonstrate the great value of daily study of the Christian Science Bible lessons year-round, not just at camp!   You can sign up free to have these mets emailed to you in English by Monday or in French or Spanish by Wednesday: CHECK FOR A FREE TRANSLATION of this weekly “met” offered in FRENCH by Pascal Bujard of Switzerland AND in SPANISH by Ana Arcioni of Spain.

Golden Text:  What a relief!  “…there is no God else beside me…”
We need not fear the supposed “gods” of illness, evil, matter, money, sensuality, etc.  If these kinds of negative thoughts tempt you, don’t be impressed.  Look for the opposite of these suggestions.  If the false idea, “I am sick,” tries to talk to you, talk back with the opposite truth, “I am well – for I am the child of the God of health who is the only God and the only power!”  These false “gods” have no power.  They are powerless.  Only the one God is powerful and rules mankind.  God, who is tender and loving; God who is your kind Father and Mother; the God of health, goodness and purity – is all-powerful, nothing can oppose His government.

Responsive Reading:  The great architect’s promise and what he expects us to do.
To protect the Israelites from the popular practice of idol worship, God makes a covenant with them.  God promises prosperity to the Israelites if they are faithful to Him, to the one God (Westminster Dictionary of the Bible).  In the covenant he explains that this faithfulness includes following His commandments and He warns them that if they make an object to worship, an idol, this will break the covenant.  Evil suggestions may try to make you believe that it’s hard to follow God’s commandments and have no idols, but these suggestions are false and powerless.    You know that God made this covenant for the protection and prosperity of the Israelites and for all of us.  The plan of God, [“the great architect,” – Science & Health, 68] is for all of his children to express their highest selfhoods, to prosper, to be successful, and to do much good in everything they do.  His rules are your guidelines [specifications, or specs] to a happy, successful life.  [The first two standard Architectural “spec” categories are “General Conditions” and “Removals,” or “No other gods” and “no graven images,” or obsessions.  Just as any quality builder wouldn’t agree to accept a substandard product or method that would lead to an inferior building,] so you wouldn’t allow yourself to be tempted into doing something when you know in advance it will ruin your happiness and success.  [We know The Ten Commandments in advance and they are very specific and mandatory.  They’re not just “The Ten Suggestions.”]  When we are faithful to God, Spirit and to His commandments, we are protected and surrounded by God’s qualities – perfect unconditional love, abundant goodness, pain-free living, consistently unfolding progress.  If you would choose to follow the idols of matter, you would have a very different result.  The many “gods” of matter promise you an upside of good but these “gods” also always include a downside.  Matter “gods” give you: love and hate, have and have not, pleasure and pain, fame and shame.  You won’t follow this kind of guidance, since you already know it will lead you to a bad place.  The one God doesn’t have a negative flipside, it is good through and through.  Only follow the one God and enjoy the perfect blessings of His promise!

Section 1:  God never gives up on you, be sure you don’t give up on Him.
Moses went up to the mount to receive the Ten Commandments from God. (B3)  After he had been gone for 40 days, the people were convinced that he was not coming back.  While he had been with them, Moses taught the people that there was only one God.  This one God was to be worshiped spiritually, through their good thoughts and good actions, not by bowing down to material symbols. (S3)  The Israelites grew fearful when Moses didn’t return from the mount.  Because of this they created a new symbol, a golden calf, to worship.  We need to watch that we don’t follow this bad example and give up on the healing power of our prayers just because we’ve been praying for a while.  When we pray in Christian Science, we are being a witness to the one God.   God is the healer and our prayers are a witness to what God is doing.  God, “the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting” (S2) divine Mind, is giving us perfect inspiration, continuously.  We can be sure that even if the physical evidence doesn’t appear to have changed yet, God’s inspirations are changing our thought.  This is where the healing takes place, in thought, and because of this mental action of God, we can be confident that the physical healing will be completed.  God’s work is perfect.  If we are joyfully watching the changes in our thought, instead of dwelling on the physical evidence, we will never find ourselves bowing before the golden calf of material beliefs.  Besides, since we love God, we will surely want to be a witness to His power everyday.  If we are going to pray everyday, does it really matter how many days we’ve been praying?  God cannot stop being God.  His will is done.  Even though the people had made the golden calf, God didn’t give up on them.  He called Moses back to the mount and gave him a new copy of the Ten Commandments.  This time when he returned, again after 40 days, the people were waiting to receive God’s commands.  Hang in there, you can be sure God’s all-powerful thoughts are having their good effect.

Section 2:  “… the real status of man.” (S8)
Only divine Mind, the creator of man, can define and uphold “the real status of man.”  Like idolatry, material medicine puts all of its faith in matter. (S6)  It examines, tests, and analyzes the composition and action of the matter body in order to uncover an ailment and have an impact on health.  The thought of the patient is rarely considered to be an important factor in the illness or the healing.  Every healing in Christian Science proves that “health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind.” (S8)  You can see this in Mary Baker Eddy’s discussion of the healing that led her to discover Christian Science, explained in citation S9.  She doesn’t say anything about how matter was studied or manipulated, because it wasn’t.  Instead she explains what she learned about her relationship to God and how this new understanding healed her.  I had a healing that showed me, without a doubt, that all is Mind.  I had a problem with one of my ears.  The hearing in that ear sounded like I had an earplug in it all the time.  Even though the problem had been going on for quite a while, it was healed instantaneously when this spiritually inspired thought from divine Love came into my consciousness: “You can always hear what God is saying to you.”  As I pondered this thought for a few minutes the hearing in that ear returned to normal.  I was not only healed physically, I had learned something new and beautiful about my relationship to God.  I suppose it’s possible that a medical doctor may have had some way to improve the hearing in that ear, but if I would have turned to matter instead of Spirit, I never would have discovered the depth of my spiritual connection to God.  The spiritual understanding I gained through this healing has given me strength of conviction that has contributed to many other healings that have greatly improved my overall health.  To be spiritually and physically whole, depend on Mind healing, the one and only true healing.  And, just for fun look on page 33 of Miscellaneous Writings to learn all of the advantages of Mind healing.

Section 3:  Guard the door of your thinking.  In her article Ways That Are Vain Mary Baker Eddy tells us to “Guard and strengthen your own citadel more strongly.” (Miscellany page 213)   A citadel is “a structure or place from which one can resist attack, a fort.”  (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)   In Christian Science your citadel is your consciousness.  If your thought is filled with thoughts of God, good, positive thoughts grounded in spiritual truth, then your “citadel” is strong.  You must be alert, though; in the world today, we are constantly bombarded with bad, negative thoughts, based on the material point of view. (S12)  These are the “enemies” that  “speak evil” referred to in B11, a constant advertisement of the power of disease and evil that is being broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It is like an enemy taunting us and continuously predicting our downfall. (B12)   The good news though, is that you have a refuge in God, you can seek and find the true thoughts of divine Mind –   “go up to the mountain of the Lord … and he will teach (you) of his ways, and (you) will walk in his paths.”  (B13)   There is only one Mind and that one is God.  “Look unto me (divine Mind), and be ye saved.” (B14)   You reflect the one God, the one Mind.   Claim this Mind only as your own.  Don’t make a fearful, mortal mind your idol.  Study “such books as will rule disease out of mortal mind… (S16),” Science and Health and the Bible.  You have God-given power to empty your consciousness of all diseased thoughts and to thoroughly guard the door of your thinking.

Section 4:  The Aesculapius of mind and body. (S18)
Aesculapius is a character from Greek mythology who was the most successful doctor of his time.  He also had the ability to revive the dead (Wikipedia).   Mary Baker Eddy “endeavored” to make Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, a healing book with the power to solve every problem known to mankind.  When she described her writing process she explained, “I was a scribe under orders.” (Miscellaneous Writings, 311)   This little book is not the mere creation of a woman in the late 1800’s, it is a divine revelation.  Mary Baker Eddy explains further,  “When I wrote “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” I little understood all that I indited;  but when I practised its precepts, healing the sick and reforming the sinner, then I learned the truth of what I had written.” (Miscellany, 271)
Mrs. Eddy did look to God to be saved and her prayers were answered.  Her own health was restored and her discovery brought a great blessing to mankind.  Christian Science was the answer to her sincere prayer and she worked, generously and tirelessly, to make sure that this Science was clear, practical, and always available to all mankind.  Plant yourself “on the teachings of Jesus … and on the testimony of the Science of Mind.” (S21)  This is the most secure foundation known to man [and to his “great architect”] – you can count on it!

Section 5:  Jesus demonstrates the power of Mind.
This healing of the epileptic boy historically represents a significant victory in favor of the power of Mind.  Chronologically, it follows Jesus’ visit to the mount [of transfiguration] with Peter, James, and John, where he talked with Moses and Elijah, demonstrating the power of Mind over time and space.  While Jesus was on the mountain, his enemies were working hard to weaken his ministry.  “The scribes had taken advantage of Christ’s absence to undermine his influence with the multitude, and their designs had been assisted by the failure of his disciples to heal a peculiarly severe case of epilepsy.” (Dummelow)   As soon as Jesus returned, he again proved, with out a doubt, the absolute power of Mind to heal the sick. (B19 & S22)  The epileptic boy’s Father tells Jesus that his disciples were not able to heal the child.  Jesus replied, “What a generation!  No sense of God!  No focus to your lives!  How many times do I have to go over these things?” (The Message)   Perhaps, the disciples had failed to protect themselves from the negative influence of the scribes antagonism.  You will never find yourself with “no sense of God” and  “with no focus” if you are obedient to Article 8, Section 6 of the Church Manual.  The heading of this section is a call to be alert, to guard the door of our thought:  “Alertness to Duty.  Sect. 6.  It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion and not to be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind.  By his works he shall be judged, – and justified or condemned.”  (Church Manual, 42)   I’m sure after this incident the disciples were more diligent to defend their mental citadels.  Defending yourself daily will prevent failures in your daily works that would undermine Jesus’ ministry.  Free from false influences, you will daily prove the healing power of the divine Mind.

Section 6:  Here’s one fight everyone is encouraged to get into – “the good fight of faith.” (B21)
Your goal in this fight is: to obey and honor the one God only (B24); to save mankind physically and morally (S26); to exterminate all mental microbes of sin and disease (S26).  Your weapons are “the divine Mind, Love’s essential qualities, and a spiritual understanding of the “nature and essence of being.” (S28)   The plan of attack has been laid out for you:  “…abandon pharmaceutics,” study the science of being (S27), give up the false material sense of the body, strive to understand Principle and its idea, and let your divine Principle teach you how to be a spiritual healer.  First and foremost – have only one Mind, one God and continually look to this one Mind for guidance (B24  & S30).  Never give up.  Have only one God, one Mind as your guide.   Be persistent – this is a fight you’re allowed to fight and guaranteed to win!

Camp Director’s Note: The above sharing is the latest in a series of CedarS Bible Lesson “mets” (metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians [with bracketed notes by me as editor]. This document is intended to initiate further study as well as to encourage the application of ideas found in the Weekly Bible Lessons as printed in the Christian Science Quarterly and as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms.* Originally sent JUST to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson “mets” are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension, background and daily applicability to some of the ideas and passages being studied.   The citations referenced (i.e.   B1 and S28) from this week’s Bible Lesson in the “met” (metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the King James Version of the Bible (B1-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (S1-30)  The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist.  The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world.  The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one.   We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of these ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor.   Spirituality is your innate estate that connects you moment by moment with God. (See S&H 258:30)  Christ is the gift of light that Jesus gave. This Christ light of spiritual understanding comes with and reveals infinite blessings. So, have fun unwrapping and cherishing your very special, spiritual gift(s)!   Then, wherever you are, share them with all as big blessings that make the Infinite difference!
