Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson

Mortals and Immortals –November 9-15, 2015

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, CS pegasus6524@gmail.com

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – How are you on your journey from the old man to the new? That is, how are you cultivating and growing your understanding that you do not live in the flesh (matter), but in the Spirit? Let this lesson guide you on the journey.

Ask students how they prepare for taking a trip. How do they plan, what do they pack, how do they choose an itinerary, what is their objective, what will they see, will they select a guide? Now ask those same questions with the journey from the old man to the new in mind.

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – What is a gift? Have you ever received one? Is it yours forever once received? May you choose to do whatever you like with it? You have been given the gift of Christ. By whom? What can you do with the knowledge and understanding of the Christ, or God with us, with you? Where does this gift lead you? Unto the perfect man. Is the understanding that you are the perfect man the same as arriving at the new man?

How do you testify, affirm, utilize this understanding? Where are you on the journey?

Understanding darkened Renewed by the Spirit

Ignorant True holiness

Blindness of heart Righteous (right thinking & acting)

Uncaring All connected to God

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – What has the spirit of God, the Christ, given you? Freedom from the old ways to the new. (B-1) Who are you as the new man? (B-2) Can you imagine living as long as Enoch? (B-3) How about living forever? (B-4) Are you walking with God? Remember, you have the gift of Christ; you are guided by the Eternal One; you have life eternal. (S-5)

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – See the distinction of the old man and the new set forth in citations B-6 – B-9. So what are you minding? The testimony of the physical senses or the fact that God dwells in you? (B-10) What aids do you have for guidance on your journey? (S-8) What are angels? This is a good memorization opportunity. Are angels ever with you? Then they must be a gift from God.

What is a counterfeit? How do you know, how can you tell? One can look at the real so long that it is permanently in thought, then it is easy to tell the counterfeit and dismiss it. (S-9) Which below is real and which is counterfeit? (S-9 – S-12)

  1. Man is spiritual and immortal
  2. Children of men
  3. Cannot depart from holiness
  4. Capacity or freedom to sin
  5. Embrace the glories of limitless, incorporeal Life and Love
  6. Unsatisfied human cravings
  7. Happy, healthy
  8. Passions rule

How does the new man who is holy, harmonious, immortal, impact the old man? (S-13)
This is also a good memorization opportunity.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – Has God abandoned you on your journey? Are you forgotten? (B-11) What did Jesus show in the story in citation B-14 about never being abandoned on the journey?

Read together Hymn 64 from the Christian Science Hymnal, printed below. When you side with eternal Truth on your journey, what is the result? (S-20)

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – Read together citation B-16. Ask students to record what qualities or characteristics God is providing on their journey.

From citation B-16:You know

  • You hear
  • You faint not
  • You are not weary
  • You have understanding
  • You mount up with wings as eagles
  • You run and are not weary
  • You walk and not faint

From citation S-21:

  • You are beautiful
  • You are exempt from age and decay
  • You are drawn by perfect Mind
  • You are lovely
  • You are in the Christ and cannot be elsewhere.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – When confronted with the counterfeit in the story in B-18, was Peter afraid? Why not? What did he do? Why was he able to do so? Was he looking at the counterfeit or the counter-fact?

What are some counter-facts in B-19?

  • God has given us power and love and a sound mind
  • God has saved us (protected us) and continues to do so
  • We are a holy calling
  • The Christ is a permanent gift to us
  • The Christ was made manifest in the life of Christ Jesus
  • We can see this through the Gospel (good news)

What does Mary Baker Eddy tell us in S-27 about the power of Christ aiding us on our journey? These are facts. What is the result when we wake to them? S-28.

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – Read together the journey statement in citation B-20. You might wish to read it also from other Bible translations to enrich the understanding. What is a key spiritual fact in citations S-30 and S-32?

Happy Journey!

Hymn 64:
From sense to Soul my pathway lies before me,
From mist and shadow into Truth’s clear day;
The dawn of all things real is breaking o’er me,
My heart is singing: I have found the way.

I reach Mind’s open door, and at its portal
I know that where I stand is holy ground;
I feel the calm and joy of things immortal,
The loveliness of Love is all around.

The way leads upward and its goal draws nearer,
Thought soars enraptured, fetterless and free;
The vision infinite to me grows clearer,
I touch the fringes of eternity.
