Priceless Gems from C.A.M.P.! — (Christ’s Animating Mindset Practiced)
Application ideas “mined” by Warren Huff from insights by
Cobbey Crisler, Ken Cooper and others related
to The Christian Science Bible Lesson on
“Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced.”
for December 1, 2019

Gem 1—Rejoice in reflecting the four elements of “God’s being” as your divinely-ordained identity in your expression of “INFINITY, FREEDOM, HARMONY, and BOUNDLESS BLISS” (S3).
These words are etched into four, 5-ft- long, wood signs at CedarS Cable Ski launch.
(As seen online in a top-right Download.) Have fun applying each of them to yourself as noted below!

[W: One-liner, word equations in Science & Health (470:23 & 481:3) are “textbook” illustrations of the “Transitive Property of Equality” (www.mathwords.com) If A = B and B = C, then A = C.]

Science & Health p. 470:23 is the first of two simple, one-line, word equations under review. It states: “Man (A) is (=) (B) the expression of God’s being.”

Science & Health (citation S3 this week (p. 481:23) is the second of two, simple, one-line, word equations under review. It states:
“God’s being (B) is (=) (C) infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss.”

[W: Apply to yourself the Transitive Property of Equality, since If A = B and B = C, then A = C.]

Thus,Man (A) is (=) (C) the expression of infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss.”

So, like CedarS Cable Ski system, its skiers and the “Energizer Bunny,” you are entitled to claim:
I express Infinity and its synonyms including: inexhaustibility, eternity, limitlessness, immeasurability, perpetuity (See https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/rodule )

Like CedarS Cable Skiers and the Statue of Liberty, as man, you are entitled to claim that:
I express freedom and its synonyms including: opportunity, power, ability, exemption, flexibility, immunity, privilege, right, discretion, facility, leeway, liberty, prerogative, range, scope, unrestraint, carte blanche, elbowroom, free rein, full play, full swing, plenty of rope

Like CedarS Cable Skiers and Band, Chorus, Cabin or Family members, you are entitled to claim:
I express harmony and its synonyms including: cooperation, friendship, consistency, good will, kinship, peace, rapport, tranquility, unanimity, understanding, unity, accord, amicability, compatibility, concord, like-mindedness

Like CedarS Cable Skiers, Happy Campers and Stress-free Reflections, you are entitled to claim:
I express boundless bliss and its synonyms including: unchangeable blessedness, inexhaustible happiness, unlimited gladness, untold joy…

Gem 2—Pass your divine identity test by knowing, quoting and living Scripture like Jesus did!
Here are some Cobbey Crisler insights on Jesus’ temptations, Matthew 4:1-11, 23 (B8):
“There is what we might call an identity-crisis test in Chapter 4 (of Matthew). The Anglo-Saxon word “tempt” has almost picked up a theological meaning. It really means “test.” That’s what the word means. It’s a test. (Verse 1) So, “Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness” to be tested on the fact that had recently been revealed (directly from God in Matthew 3:17 that Jesus was God’s “Beloved Son”).
Verse 2. “After forty days and nights he’s hungry.”
This reminds me of Moses. He, too, had that testing period (Exodus 24:18) just prior to receiving the Ten Commandments. For forty days and forty nights. This Chapter in Matthew is just prior to the Sermon on the Mount or the Beatitudes. This preparation is the same. And there is a test.
Verse 3. “When the tester comes,” here it is, question Number 1: “If you are the Son of God.” Why would that even have emerged if we had not had Verse 17 in the preceding chapter? “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” The test question is, “If you are,” then what? “Command that these stones be made bread.”

How does Jesus respond to this test question? He quotes Scripture. Notice how Jesus responds to temptation. If this is the way Jesus elects to respond to it, what about you and me? How eloquent might you or I try to get when we respond to temptation? Make up original sermons, choose our words carefully, perhaps?

Jesus decided the best defense was Scripture. This verse is taken from Deuteronomy 8, Verse 3. Deuteronomy is a law book. In fact, the word in Greek deuteros nomos is the second law or the repetition of the law. How did he regard this test by Satan? What was going on in Jesus’ thinking here? Had he isolated it completely?

“First of all, what does Satan mean in Hebrew? Accuser. It is also the term for prosecuting attorney. If he has the prosecuting attorney accusing in thought, Jesus in his defense cites what? The law. He quotes the law book. He doesn’t need to do anything original. The law is the law and it never varies. Therefore, what is being suggested her by Satan, or the prosecuting attorney is illegal. It is illegitimate. He proves it by citing the law. That’s a marvelous technique for us in the middle of temptation.

“Our consciousness is like a law court. And the plusses and minuses that occur there have to be dealt with, as in a law court. Where are the accusations coming from? The prosecuting attorney or Satan. Where do we get the information? The law book or the defense attorney.

“You know that Jesus promised that something would come after he had left. It’s been translated “the comforter” in the gospel of John. The Greek word is parakletos, sometimes transliterated as paraclete. In Greek it can be the technical term for defense attorney.

“Verse 4. So, where did Jesus turn for his protection and defense, the defense of his manhood, the defense of his sonship with God, which is a spiritual fact revealed directly to him by God? How does he defend it? By citing the law book, utilizing the Comforter or defense attorney against the arguments of Satan. If Jesus had to do that, can we do anything less? “Man shall not live by bread alone,” Jesus said, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” That is a great statement of survival in an emergency….

Verse 5. But Satan isn’t through yet, is he? Next thing, take Jesus out of the wilderness, and move him into an entirely different environment. The sophistication of organized religion, ecclesiasticism. “Take him to the very pinnale of the Temple.”

Verse 6. Show him everything that could belong to him ecclesiastically if he would only go via the world’s route by following devilish suggestions. “If thou be the son of God,” the same test question again. “Cast thyself down.” Notice the suggestion is that Jesus do it himself. Apparently Satan knew that it would not succeed trying to cast Jesus down. If Satan couldn’t do it, the only way that it could be done would be for Jesus to do it to himself.” …

In verse 6 we find that Satan is quoting Scripture, “It is written, He will give his angels charge concerning thee.” In fact, that is a very key attempt by Satan. Why? Satan discovered what Jesus’ defense was, namely Scripture. O.K., if that’s the way you want it, the devil can use Scripture for its purposes. But the devil doesn’t know much beyond the 91st Psalm and everybody knows that. So, Satan quotes, “It is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee; and in their hands they shall bear you up.” You see, there is nothing to worry about, Jesus, even Scripture now backs you, so leap down.

Verse 7. Jesus doesn’t react. It’s reaction in Judo that is taken advantage of by your opponent. Jesus doesn’t react. Simply quotes once again the law book. This come from Deuteronomy 6, verse 16. “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” You cannot test God and His revealed Word. The high quality of Jesus’ discernment and his thought is not sufficient to dismiss Satan after one temptation, or even a second one. How valuable is the quality of persistence! Supposed Jesus had given up after the second time, “I already covered this ground.” Or listened to Satan, but he doesn’t.

Verse 8. The third charge or accusation occurs, “the devil takes him into an exceeding high mountain, and shows him all the kingdoms of the world.”

“All these things being offered to Jesus are to a degree a kind of power. He was offered personal power by changing stones to bread. Then he was offered priestly power if he’d go for the argument to be the head of ecclesiasticism. And he was offered political power by being shown all the kingdoms of the world.

“All those temptations that hit human nature… We are in the wilderness at some point along with Jesus having the exact same tests applied to us. How are our responses to those exam questions? Do we pass with flying colors?…

Verse 10. We find that Jesus answers and that the only thing he says that’s original, “Get thee behind me Satan.” He dismisses the prosecution in thought, “for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shall thou serve.” That’s kind of a combination of Deuteronomy 6, verse 13 and Deuteronomy 10, verse 20.

Verse 11. Look at what happens. “The devil leaveth him.” No longer is there dualism in thought. “Angels came and ministered unto him.” True communication completely governed his thought, no longer a divided kingdom. The false communication is dismissed.”

Verse 23. And “healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” Here are human problems that had defied solution, and Jesus solved them all based on his concept of theology, namely the kingdom. Remember a kingdom is not chaos. It’s an ordered government of heaven and harmony at hand.”

Gem 3—To be delivered from the illusion of evil, Cling Steadfastly to God… Pray the W.A.L.L. Treatment (in S17, 495:14) when you’re tempted to believe that your “back’s against the wall.”—Or, as a Divine Image And Likeness, D.I.A.L.-up a C.A.L.L. treatment to know “Who you gonna call?”
On page 495, lines 14-24 Mary Baker Eddy gives you (and the whole world) four powerful (and memorizable) sentences to guide your thoughts to healing when you are tempted to believe in the reality of some illusion or ghost of fear or doubt that seems to be in your face.

W.A.L.L. Treatment (S17, 495:14) These four sentences begin with the letters W, A, L, L—hence the W.A.L.L. treatment. This was a memory devise that came to me and has made it easier for me to remember the whole paragraph and use it often as a cornerstone of healing treatments.

  • When the illusion…
  • Allow nothing but his likeness to abide in your thought.
  • Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow…
  • Let Christian Science instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding…”

Or C.A.L.L. Treatment (S20, 495:14) A different acronym/memory device can be made by using the first letters of the directive verbs in each of these same four sentences. They are Cling, Allow, Let and Let again—hence the C.A.L.L. treatment. This alternate memory devise came to me when tempted to be afraid of some illusion or lingering “ghostly” belief from the past, present or future (like Scrooge was in “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens). Mary Baker Eddy unknowingly answered in-advance and brilliantly the question “Who you Gonna Call?” (from the 1984 movie “Ghostbusters” soundtrack song by Ray Parker Jr.). She treated all such “ghosts” as illusions in her ultimate, metaphysical “Ghostbuster” treatment that has served as a cornerstone for thousands of healings. –“When the illusion… tempts you,

  • Cling Steadfastly to God and His idea.
  • Allow nothing but his likeness to abide in your thought.
  • Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your Clear Sense and calm trust…
  • Let Christian Science instead of Corporeal Sense, support your understanding of being and…”

(Reread carefully and consider trying to memorize the FULL, 10-line Christian Science treatment on page 495:14-24 (S17). Note the four pairs of consecutive words (which I capitalized, highlighted and bolded above) which begin with C and S!

Gem 4—Know "Ability & Opportunity are coordinate ideas" & "Rise to the Occasion" Application ideas from citation S18 in the Christian Science Bible Lesson offered by Warren Huff

“What occasions or opportunities are demanding your best these days?
1. Hard assignments, unbelievable work load and killer deadlines?
2. Important tests or essays?
3. A big game, presentation or performance?
4. Group Leadership role(s)?
5. An important date or social event?
6. A sticky situation where taking a moral or ethical stand is needed?
7. A challenging relationship that keeps testing your patience, equanimity and integrity?

“Whatever opportunities you face, you can meet them as their master by obeying this powerful two-word command.
"Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil."
Science & Health, 571:16 (S18)

“Know yourself as God knows you – as an ever-perfect expression of "infinity, freedom, harmony and boundless bliss." (see S&H 481:3, S3 and Gem 1) Totally accept and simply express each of these elements of your divine identity to eradicate their illegitimate opposites. Without a body-based sense of self, you will be open for God to eliminate from your experience: all of matter's debilitating drag of limited energy, funds, intelligence, speed, inspiration; all its sapping slavery of restrictions (injuries, red tape tie-ups); all its regular rub of inharmonious relationships and its constant cloud of frustration and unhappiness. All gone! All fables that were never part of you or of those you love.

In the next couple of days, "your assignment, should you choose to accept it," will be to simply do your part—know yourself spiritually—and watch God do Her part, to supply you with all the wisdom and occasions where victories are wanted. You may also enjoy highlighting in every lesson all of God's jobs in one color and all of yours in another color.

A friend shed new light on our focus passage with this one-line insight:
"ABILITY (the wisdom) and OPPORTUNITY (the occasion) are coordinate ideas."

By accepting this divine law and knowing yourself spiritually, you will never have ability without being given opportunity to express it. (no unneeded bench-sitting) And, you'll also never be given opportunities (like the seven listed at the top) without having the God-given abilities to rise to the occasion!”

Gem 5a—Correct the lie and liar mentally with a full recognition of what’s true about spiritual identity, like Jesus did to lift up a woman bent-over for 18 years!
Cobbey Crisler on Luke 13:11-16 (B10)
“Verses 10 through 17 are a healing found only in Luke.
(Verse 11) A woman with a spinal difficulty is in a synagogue Notice that Luke doesn’t say she has an infirmity. Luke, who is reputed to be a physician, doesn’t even diagnose it as an infirmity, but as a “spirit of an infirmity,” a concept, a spirit, a thought. “She was bowed together. She couldn’t lift up herself.”

Verse 12. Jesus comes and announces to womanhood something that could be applicable in many ways, not just this one time. “Woman, you are free from your infirmity. Verse 13. “She’s made straight and glorifies God.”

Verse 14. Incredible, “the ruler of the synagogue” in which this grand healing and correction of a human problem occurred “answered with indignation”.

Jesus’ explanation about the cause of disease is in Verse 16. No longer should there be any room in Christian thought that disease stems from … God’s will when Jesus attributes it to anything that would oppose God. Only what would oppose God would impose something on man that God Himself never created in His whole man. Is that a new theology? Satan and disease linked, and not God as the cause of loss, or pain, or sickness?

Because if it is new theology, he defines Satan as a liar as Jesus does in John (8:44). Satan has bound this woman with an infirmity that has her bent over, and has accomplished this for eighteen years. (Luke 13:16) And, “Satan is a liar and the father of it.” Satan’s work must be lies as well. If they are lies, they can be corrected mentally, by a full recognition of what is true. Notice that Satan does the binding. Jesus said (John 8:32) “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

It’s a contest between the truth and the lie about God and His theology, about man, about woman, about children and about disease. If Satan is a liar, he will never change his character. Our idea of God may have gone haywire, but God has not moved.”
“Book of Luke: Luke the Researcher,”
by B. Cobbey Crisler

Gem 5b—Rejoice that even 18-year old lies just vanish when the truth is told.
Ken Cooper wrote a poem about Jesus healing of the bent-over woman from the perspective of the woman. It is movingly read by Ken’s wife, Sue at https://youtu.be/XypmOIxlNlg .

Ken writes: “When we acknowledge the infinite all power of God, the nothingness of any other so-called power is revealed. Error can conjure all the images and illusions it likes, but from the start it is a liar and the father of itself, of no consequence, no appearance in the kingdom of heaven in which God and man reside.

It doesn’t matter how long one might believe a lie (2+2=5), for when the truth is known (2+2=4) the illusion, spell, error is simply gone. 2+2=4 was never aware of it, nor affected by it. Jesus knew the Truth, that error has no history, and for those he healed, which included those bound for many years, their history was all gone in the joy of present freedom. David was able to overcome Goliath, for he had no fear. As the Golden Text says, in majestic triumph we overthrow our foes and prove the Allness of our God.”

Gem 6—In the freeing power of Truth, “find a sovereign antidote”—i.e. a supreme cure—a superior solution—or an excellent, without equal answer to every problem, lie and challenge! (S19, 495:10)
[Warren: Mary Baker Eddy’s use of the word “sovereign” is especially interesting to me because
410 Sovereign Court #8
Ballwin, MO 63011

is the address of the first-ever, CedarS office outside of a Huff home!

Thanks to one generous gift and to several others that came when we let the need be known, we will be happily moving CedarS office to that nearby location instead of to our basement at 1314 Parkview Valley Drive. (It’s only about 4 blocks away from Sovereign Court.) Until then, we will be at CedarS in order to answer (hopefully lots of) “Giving Tuesday” donation calls at 417-532-6699. (We’ll send an Open House/Office invitation and pictures in a few weeks.)

Here are inspiring (to me) connections I’ve found in CedarS St. Louis area office address that could also help one remember its numbers (of 4 10 8):

  • The 4 (in our “410” address) could be seen not only as representing the 4-square footprint of our new office condo (and of the Holy City), but also as representing FOR—or in full support of:
  • The 10 (in the 410) (The Ten Commandments) and,
  • The 8 (in the #8) (The Eight Beatitudes)
  • The Ten Commandments and Beatitudes are featured as fun-to-live elements both in CedarS Bible Lands Park and in “The first lessons of the children” that Mary Baker Eddy specifies be taught in Sunday School. (Church Manual, 62)

The word “Court” in CedarS new office address has connections (as a noun) to a Royal Court, Court of Law or High Court, or “the consciousness of Love” (SH 578:17) and Love’s “control … over all” (SH 514:26). “Court” (as a verb) could mean to “woo” or “attract.” We hope CedarS will woo the “unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers athirst in the desert… (and) Give them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name…” (SH 570:14) And, CedarS affirms that “Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind.” (SH 124:20)

Gem 7—Pledge to daily download divine data (d4) from “the cloud” onto “the tablet of your being” to keep it from being “defaced.” (See S20, 227:28 and “Your 10 Commandment Pledges” as a Downloadable PDF on CedarS “Gems—Ancient & Modern” webpage.) Gem 8—Don’t get wrapped up in theology! Be inclusive in your church outreach and healing ministry! Cobbey Crisler shares below the context of the story of Philip and Simon the sorcerer of Samaria (B13, Acts 8:5-13):
“Well, in Acts chapter 8, we’re introduced to Saul, unfortunately, persecuting the church. And yet the result of his persecution is that the church no longer becomes parochial as far as geographical location is concerned. Jerusalem doesn’t become the exclusive place where the action is.

On to Judea and Samaria in advance of Saul’s attempt to persecute go the early Christian church members. But this time the apostles don’t budge. The ones they would have wanted the most, they don’t move from Jerusalem.

“Saul…” in Acts 8, verse 3 “makes havoc.” … That’s a very strong expression according to the Anchor Bible’s understanding of the Greek word. Its “havoc” means even more than our English use of it.

“Just entering in without warrant, without humanity, hauling men and women, whoever, throwing them into prison.” (See below, paraphrased)

Acts 8:3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

And, at that point, the church, attacked from without, is going to spread without.

And we find Philip in the city of Samaria, preaching Christ. And Philip – it’s not the apostle, it’s the evangelist, the one who was on the church Committee of Care – look how he cares. “He’s in Samaria.”

Acts 8:5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

Is that a breakthrough? Is he taking the church beyond where Jesus had outlined or wanted it?
You remember when he told the disciples on their first healing mission, the first-time students, when they were set out and told to heal. And they had to come back and report. He said to “go to the lost sheep of Israel; enter not ye into the any city of Samaria.” (See below, paraphrased)

Matt 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not.

Matt 10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Does that mean that Jesus didn’t care about Samaritans? Not only doesn’t it mean that, but what examples do we have that he did care deeply about Samaritans? … It was the Samaritan that turned around who was the 10th leper, wasn’t it? It was the woman of Samaria he spends almost the entire fourth chapter of John talking with.

His instructions were to the disciples. Were they ready? What was wrong in their thought maybe? Could they go out on the first mission humanity had ever received collectively to go out and heal, could they also go out and tackle theological differences at the same time? They might get all wrapped up in theology and forget about healing.

Jesus didn’t get wrapped up in theology with a small “t.” He was too busy expressing theology with the large “T.” And, so he could deal in Samaria, and he could deal with Gentiles long before his disciples were equipped to do so.

And here, however, Philip moves out into an area that Jesus has already been. We know that; this is not then a pioneer effort, and when he goes through Samaria, he is met by a lot of unclean spirits. They seem to be the first that feel the presence of the healing power here of the early church. They were in Jesus’…you know they were the first to tell Jesus that he was the Christ, practically, even before his disciples.

The “unclean spirits knew the presence of the destroyer” of their right to existence, or their right to dominate mankind. (See below, paraphrased)

Acts 8:7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

Well, one of the effects of church work is see in Acts 8, verse 8: “There was great joy in that city.”

And, immediately opposition comes up. We have Simon who’s been call Simon maguze, or the magician, and a man that we know something about from other accounts – revolting, as a matter of fact, his theology.

He was a Samaritan himself, born at Guetta, according to Justin martyr, he had a lot of secret rites. There was frenzy and madness associated with it. He used to have his followers prostrate themselves before pictures of himself and images, and Helena, who happen to have been a prostitute that he picked up off the streets, and said that Helena really was the Holy Spirit, and he was a personalized God. So, you see the distortion, the filthy really, connotations attached to the developing beauty and joy which was church.

And yet, the great miracles and followings that he seemed to have caused a “bewitching of many people,” in Acts 8, verse 11, “it was sorcery.”…

And, when Philip was doing all of this that Simon really couldn’t do, without a great deal of trickery, Simon was interested in it. And so, Philip, bless his heart, includes Simon among the early members of the church.

Now, meanwhile, back in Jerusalem, where what many scholars have called the mother church in Jerusalem because after this persecution, churches began to be founded in and around Jerusalem and some at great distances that relate to Jerusalem more like branches to a vine. And the mother church – the decision making – (was) still going on in Jerusalem.”
