Possible Sunday School Topics
by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S., for the

Christian Science Bible Lesson: “Life”

for July 14-20, 2014

P.S.S.T.  Golden Text – Can we trust God to be God and to do good?  The Golden Text is comprehensive and includes all aspects of our life, where we live, where we are active, and what comprises our very existence.  What defines for you a joyful, full, well-lived life?  Is God in it?

P.S.S.T.  Responsive Reading – Again, the Responsive Reading is also comprehensive.  How long have we dwelled with God and God with us?  Who formed the earth and our world?  Who controls it?  What is God thinking and knowing about each of us and our reason for being?  Can you trust God to be God and to do good?  It is God’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom and to satisfy your desires.

P.S.S.T.  Section 1 – What kind of song will you sing unto the Lord?  Song of gratitude, blues, jazz, gospel, rock, old spiritual, hip-hop?  What would be your message?  Ask students to write a few lines of a song they would compose to God.  What was Paul's message to the Athenians at Mars’ Hill? (B2)  That God is knowable, reliable, limitless.

P.S.S.T.  Section 2 – What is the theme in citation B5 about accidents?  What did Paul demonstrate and prove to his listeners?  See also citation S8.  What is the prayer treatment given in citations S9 and S10 and S11.

Man is indestructible.
Man is eternal.
No breakage nor dislocation can occur.
Accidents and injuries do not, cannot, kill man.
You are not hurt, why?
You are faithful and adhere to what God knows about you.
Nothing can end your existence.

P.S.S.T.  Section 3 – Read the story of Paul’s experience in the Bible portion of this Lesson.  What protected Paul?  Was it only that he was a Roman citizen or was there something else at work? (S14)  Paul understood he could not be separated from God as stated so clearly in the Golden Text.  Read also Romans 8:35, 37-39.  Are you governed by God?  Can you ever be separated from God?  Can you ever be deprived of your right to life and that life full of grace, intelligence, abilities?

P.S.S.T.  Section 4 – Read the Bible story in citation B12.  Who was protected?  Why was this so?  Read in the First Church of Christ Scientist and Miscellany what Our Leader Says on page 210:1 as an explanation.  Your understanding of this requirement arms you to stand against any suggestion of separation for yourself or anyone else.

P.S.S.T.  Section 5 – Here is Biblical affirmation that healing the sick is possible.  Who does the healing in every instance? (S24)  You are an active participant and it is always God who does the healing.  Why?

God loves you and everyone.
God knows you as perfect.
God created you to exist eternally.
Harmony is the law of God.
Harmony in body must be evidenced.

Ask students to share their own witness of healings.

P.S.S.T.  Section 6 – What did Paul spend two years in Rome doing? (B16)  Could this be likened to a Christian Science Practitioner?  If you can, look at a map to see all the places where Paul traveled and preached:  Rome, Syria, Corinth, Athens, Ephesus, Thessalonica, among others.  Paul was clear in thought about his life; who gave it, who maintained it, who cherished it, who loved it.  Ask yourself the question in citation S29.  Is your life in God?  Do you have your being in God?  Is your life the same, yesterday and today, and forever? (S26)

Read aloud together Hymn 359 from The Christian Science Hymnal.
