Possible Sunday School Topics for the Christian Science Bible Lesson:

“Christ Jesus”

for August 26-September 1, 2019

prepared by Merrill Boudreaux, C.S. 314-308-1059

P.S.S.T. Introduction – As a prelude to this Lesson, read Isaiah 43:12: “I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.”

P.S.S.T. Golden Text – Ask students to define the word “law”.

From “The principle or regulation established… by some authority….”

What do they think the law of the Christ means?

See definitions of “Christ” in Science & Health583:10: “The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error.”

See also SH 473:10-12: “Christ is the ideal Truth, that comes to heal sickness and sin through Christian Science, and attributes all power to God.”

Is there a difference between Jesus and Christ? See SH 473:12 and Citation S19:

“Jesus is the name of the man who, more than all other men, has presented Christ, the true idea of God, healing the sick and the sinning and destroying the power of death. Jesus is the human man, and Christ is the divine idea; hence the duality of Jesus the Christ” (SH 473:12).

How was Jesus referred to before he was called Jesus Christ or Christ Jesus?

• Jesus of Nazareth

• Jesus the son of Joseph

Why does the law of Christ free us from sin and death? What examples of such freedom are recorded in the scriptures?

P.S.S.T. Responsive Reading – Read together Galatians 1:26,28:

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus…. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”

What do you make of these statements as law?

P.S.S.T. Section 1 – Ask students if they recognize Citation B1 from elsewhere. (Handel’s Messiah)

How would they define “comfort”? Why did the prophet Isaiah speak of comfort? To whom was he speaking and what was he foreshadowing?

Read Isaiah Chapter 39, which precedes the statement in Citation B1. He was foreshadowing the captivity of the children of Israel.

Who was John the Baptist from Citation B2? Why was he so called? What is baptism? Do Christian Scientists believe in or practice it? See Citation S2.

P.S.S.T. Section 2 – Why do you think there is so much written in the New Testament about Jesus’ healing work? It was something that people could witness, they could see and feel. Read Citation S7.

What was the underlying law that permitted and demonstrated these healing works? Go back and review the definition of Christ to aid your answer.

Read also Citation S8.

Read together Hymn 221 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed here):

Hymns 221 & 543

O Jesus, our dear Mastezr, Thy works, now understood, Reveal their full effulgence Through love and brotherhood.

Today Christ's precious Science Thy healing power makes plain: With joy may all obey thee And cast out sin and pain.

The Christ, eternal manhood, As God's own Son beloved, A tender ever-presence Within each heart is proved.

O God, our Father-Mother, Thy name we see expressed By man, who in Thy Science Is perfect, holy, blessed.

O Science, God-sent message To tired humanity, Thou art Love's revelation Of Truth that makes us free.

Thy kingdom, God, within us Shows forth Love's sweet control. God's idea, man, rejoices; He knows the reign of Soul.

P.S.S.T. Section 3 – What does it mean to be an heir of God?

Define “heir”: “A person who inherits…. Who assumes the rights and obligations of another… Who inherits the rank, title, position of another.”

What have you inherited from your Father-Mother God? Your title, Child of God. Are you willing to be this child, to declare that you are this child? Read together Citation S14. How can you fulfill the beatitude statement at the end of this citation?

Where do you see God? In yourselves, in all others. Imagine what our world would look like if we fulfilled this beatitude, this blessing.

P.S.S.T. Section 4 – See an extension of this blessing in Citation B7. Why do you think John told the story in Citation B9? Why did he include a person from Samaria in the story? What other scriptural story includes a person from Samaria as central to the story? What point was being made? Go back to the Responsive Reading, Gal. 3:26 & 28, to aid your answer.

P.S.S.T. Section 5 – Read the scripture story in B11. What do you make of this story? Is it real or just a fantasy? If real, what does it mean for us? Citation S22. Read also Science and Health 476:32-5:

“Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick. Thus Jesus taught that the kingdom of God is intact, universal, and that man is pure and holy.”

This is also a great memorization opportunity.

In Citation S23 we read, “…we are subject to the ‘divine powers that be.’” How are these powers, laws? What law can you state that reinforces the healing in the Lazarus story? Read S24 for some help.

Read together Hymn 12 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed here).

Hymn 12

Arise ye people, take your stand, Cast out your idols from the land,

Above all doctrine, form or creed Is found the Truth that meets your need. Christ's promise stands: they that believe His works shall do, his power receive.

Go forward then, and as ye preach So let your works confirm your speech,

And prove to all with following sign The Word of God is power divine.

In love and healing ministry Show forth the Truth that makes men free.

O Father-Mother God, whose plan Hath given dominion unto man,

In Thine own image we may see Man pure and upright, whole and free.

And ever through our work shall shine That light whose glory, Lord, is Thine.

What is God’s plan for you as revealed in this story and in this lesson? Perhaps it is, “Live ye forever, you child of God.”

P.S.S.T. Section 6 – What does it mean to be a follower of Christ? Citation B14. What is your aid in doing this work? Another Comforter. What is this other Comforter? Christian Science, the Science of the Christ revealing God with us, and we with God, forever.

Read together two of the tenets of Christian Science in Citation S27.

Read together Hymn 382 from the Christian Science Hymnal (printed here).

Hymn 382

What is thy birthright, man, Child of the perfect One;

What is thy Father's plan For His beloved son?

Thou art Truth's honest child, Of pure and sinless heart

Thou treadest undefiled In Christly paths apart.

Vain dreams shall disappear As Truth dawns on the sight;

The phantoms of thy fear Shall flee before the light.

Take then the sacred rod; Thou art not error's thrall;

Thou hast the gift of God—Dominion over all.
