Feel the power of the Word — Divine Science!
Metaphysical Application Ideas for the Christian Science Bible Lesson June 19-25, 2017

Subject: Christian Science

Prepared by: Kathy Fitzer, CS

This week’s lesson talks a lot about the eternal nature of the Word of God, and the power of that Word. It came to me that the Word is Truth’s revelation of itself to the human consciousness — Love’s communication to man, revealing the reality of being and bringing healing. It is the Christ. The first verse of the familiar Communion Hymn asks, “Saw ye my Savior? Heard ye the glad sound? Felt ye the power of the Word?” And then it elaborates on what this Word is: “’Twas the Truth that made us free, And was found by you and me In the life and the love of our Lord.” Jesus demonstrated the practical power of the Word of God and Christian Science gives rules to make it practical throughout all time. Mary Baker Eddy wrote: “Christian Science healing is …  the Word and the wedding of this Word to all human thought and action, — that says: Come, and I will give thee rest, peace, health, holiness.” (My. 153: 27-30). As you read the Lesson, discover more about the nature of the Word of God and how Christian Science makes it known. Remember … Christian Science truly is a Science : ”knowledge attained through study or practice," (Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary.) It’s not just another religion in a series of religions. It is the truth of being — demonstrable in daily life. It reveals the reality of limitless Life (God, Good) right where the physical senses present a view of limitation and frees us to be all that God made us to be —blessing the whole world, and everyone in it!

The Golden Text has been translated: “Your word, Lord, stands firm in heaven forever! Your faithfulness extends from one generation to the next!” (CEB) Truth never changes. The laws Jesus demonstrated are in operation today … and forever. We can put them into practice!

Responsive Reading: Think about the difference between word and Word. Paul expresses gratitude that the Thessalonians didn’t just hear the words that were being shared with them about Jesus and about God as “the word of men,” but they recognized the teachings as Truth itself, and as the power that works in all us — transforming thought. Paul says that the gospel (or good news) came in “power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance.” The Word (the power of God) is active! And unlimited by time — but remains the same for ever and ever (“the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off …)!

Section 1: Eternal Law of God — Divine Science

God established a covenant with Abraham, confirmed it with Jacob, and revealed it to Moses in the form of the law (that we know as the 10 Commandments.) (B2) The covenant is summed up in these verses: “I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.

I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.” (Lev. 26: 12, 13) Jesus came to “fulfil the law.” (Matt. 5: 17) The Christ (or Word) which reveals God’s law to man is for ever … “the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.” (B5) Divine Science is fully sanctioned by the Bible. Its authority is seen in the healing power of Truth which was evidenced before Jesus, and continues on today, and will be available forever to anyone prepared to receive Christ, Truth. (S1 & S2) Divine Science and the Word of God are used synonymously in Science and Health. (S3) Christian Science is more than a Christian denomination. “Christian Science and Christianity are one.” (S7) The Christianity taught and demonstrated by Jesus, and pure Christian Science both start from the scientific premise of perfect God and perfect man, presented in Genesis 1. (S5) We must not confuse Christian Science with the imperfect practice of it any more than we confuse acts done in the name of Christianity (like the Crusaders and the intolerance of more modern times) with the teachings of Christ Jesus. Legitimate Christian Science — God’s law — is as demonstrable today as in Jesus’ time! Accepting the challenge and opportunity to dig deep and discover that Word will surely be rewarded!

Section 2: Respond to the still small voice

We’ve said that the Word is eternal — pre-dating Jesus. It comes directly from God and can be heard and received by everyone! As he responded to the “still small voice” Elijah (Hebrew name) — or Elias (Greek transliteration) — discovered that he was not alone, nor was he on his own to defend God’s honor. Elijah had fled in fear of Queen Jezebel’s threat to kill him. He felt totally alone and hid in a cave on the same mountain where Moses had seen God face to face. Right there, the Word of God came and spoke to Elijah, assuring him that he was not alone! Elijah had gotten so caught up in a false sense of responsibility that he had become overwhelmed, and lost track of God’s constant presence! He discovered that God isn’t in the destructive elements of wind, fire, and earthquake. Elijah heard God speak to him in a “still, small voice” and he responded. Although we may receive God’s individual message in a variety of ways, it is always helpful to pause long enough to hear God’s assurances and direction. Elijah thought he was the only one left to defend God and didn’t feel capable of doing it. Understandable, right? But, God assured him that he wasn’t alone. We are never alone! Elijah had the courage to follow God’s directions and return to the area from which he had run. Just as Moses had passed his staff on to Joshua, Elijah passed his mantle (his cape) to Elisha, whom he found working his fields. Like Moses’ rod, this mantle represented God’s power. Elisha accepted the mantle, and happily left his former life and his wealth to take up the important work of following God and teaching others about Him. (B8&9) Both Elijah and Elisha were able to see beyond the evidence of the senses. Mrs. Eddy includes Christian Science in the definition of Elias because this Science allows us to discern the “spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold.” (S8&9) Don’t get stuck on what things seem to be! It doesn’t matter how many others share your view. Be still, and look through the evidence of limitation and obstruction and resistance to see the good that is always there in God’s universe — the universe of Spirit that is right here, right now. The clamoring of the material senses isn’t going to stop. Limitations and difficulties will continue to present themselves as real and powerful. This is the “mental conflict between the evidence of the spiritual senses and the testimony of the material senses.” (S11) But we always have a choice as to which we will believe! Will we listen to the convincing arguments of evil, or confidently trust the “still small voice” that assures us that evil is not real — only an illusion, a fog or mist? (S13) We need to look through it (like we correct the illusion of train tracks coming together.) Then we can take one step at a time in the direction of Good and trust that Love will lead and provide whatever help we need. As we practice listening to the “still small voice”, we get better at hearing it, and we can more confidently face down all false evidence to find God’s nature expressed in peace and health!

Section 3: Accept the promised Comforter — Christian Science

What if we viewed the world around us as Jesus did — as full of opportunities to heal? Jesus saw lots of people yearning to be healed, but not enough healers! (B10) He promised two things …. (1) that anyone who believed in Jesus could do the works Jesus did, and (2) God would send another Comforter to teach those who came after, and to remind people of what Jesus had taught. (B11) The word believe, as used here, includes the idea of trusting God and His Christ to aid one in doing something. We’re never thrown out on our own and expected to heal! The Comforter is described as the Holy Ghost — not another person, but the spirit of Truth. Jesus showed us what is possible. Christian Science — which is the promised Comforter — gives us rules (is the Science) that teach us how to follow Jesus’ example. (S14 & S16) The textbook of Christian Science describes the Christ Science as the “divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love.” (S17) In order to fly, the laws of aeronautics have to be learned and followed. It’s the same way with any science. And Christian Science is the gift God gave mankind to reveal the law of God that frees man from mortal limitations. Just as we expect to get results when we apply the laws of a particular science to a situation, we can expect cures to result when we apply the rules of Christian Science (the law of God) to any situation. (S19) Be alert to not make it too complicated. The important thing is to stick to the rules you know! Stick to Truth, that God is good and God made all. Anything that isn’t good wasn’t made by God and so has no existence. Children heal naturally because they keep it simple! We can do that, too! Healing comes as we respond to the Word — not by hoping certain words will heal.

Section 4: It’s all in the textbook — Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

Would you try to apply the rules of physics or aeronautics or engineering or design — or any science — without studying the fundamental principles? Without reading the textbook? So, it makes sense that Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which “contains the complete Science of Mind-healing” needs to be studied and the principles contained in it be applied practically to problems that arise in your experience. (S21) The Bible speaks of writing the vision, hearing instruction, hearing the words of the wise, and being a scribe. (B12,13,14,15) This is the pattern Mary Baker Eddy followed as she studied the Bible and listened for God’s direction in discovering and recording “Christian Science and its application to the treatment of disease.” (S23) Before writing Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy applied the principles she was discovering. She experienced healing herself and was able to bring healing to others, as well as to teach others how to heal by applying the rules of Christian Science before she wrote the textbook. We could say that after a deep study of the Bible, and practical application, she put the Word into words. I love the promise that because the Science contained in the book was taught directly by God, it can’t be overthrown by human opinion, misunderstanding, or criticism. There may be temporary misunderstanding of the message contained in Science and Health, “but the Science and truth therein will forever remain to be discerned and demonstrated.” (S24) The WORD remains pure. In order to understand it and feel the practical impact it makes on our lives, we need to dig in. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t seem to be able to spend hours in study or if you feel you don’t understand everything you read. What’s important is that you make it a priority to put into practice what you have glimpsed; that you acknowledge that the words you are reading represent the authority of the Word; that you strive to get new insights all the time — to see something new in words that are familiar to you or in words that you never remember reading before; and keep what you are learning in the front of thought as you view every activity from the perspective of the power of the Word that Christian Science reveals.

Section 5: Be a doer of the Word — the Spirit heals

Some people seem naturally blessed with the ability to memorize words. They can cite chapter and verse in the Bible or quote Science and Health all day long. What a gift! But, what about those of us who don’t seem blessed in that area? It’s comforting to know that what’s important is not how many words we can repeat, but how close we feel to the Word. The epistle of James talks about being a “doer of the word.” This translation may make that citation clearer: “don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” (B17) How much we apply what we are reading and learning to our daily lives and to whatever issues come to thought is the key! We read words to find the Word! The Word heals! As Mrs. Eddy writes, the “Principle [of the words] heals the sick and spiritualizes humanity.” The “power of the Word”, vitalized by Love, “the vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science” breathes life into our prayers — and brings healing. (S26) Healing comes as thought is aligned with “the spirit of Truth and Love.” Reading to learn more, and arguing on the side of Truth, can help get our thought aligned with the Word — with reality! “Bringing thought into accord with the spirit of Truth and Love” heals. (S27) We have in this section a sentence that tells us to “keep in mind the verity (or irrefutable truth) of being”. What is that truth? “… that man is the image and likeness of God, in whom all being is painless and permanent. …. man’s perfection is real and unimpeachable, (not able to be doubted, questioned, or criticized), whereas imperfection is blameworthy, unreal, and is not brought about by divine Love.” (S28) Stick to it!!! No matter what the physical testimony tries to say, respond by keeping this truth in mind and by refusing to entertain any other thoughts. We need to take our thoughts one at a time, one moment at a time and one day at a time — bringing each one under the control of Truth. Every day will bring new challenges to us and new demands to keep thought alert! We get to face every false suggestion that comes to thought— big and small — and see the power of Spirit to destroy every suggestion of sin (belief of separation from God), sickness and death! Demand progress. It is the “law of God” and the law “demands of us only what we can certainly fulfill.” (S29) Nothing is too hard for God — or for us!

Section 6: Fulfilling the higher mission of Christian Science

The demands of the Old Testament (or Hebrew Bible) are as strong today as they were then … “You must love the Lord your God and always obey his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.” (B20 – NLT) As we do our best to follow this demand, and teach others to do the same, we can believe God’s promise that what has been revealed to us can never be lost. And that applies to those who appear to have turned their backs on what they’ve been taught about God. (B21; S31) We (and every generation that follows — and in every corner of the universe) can expect to be “taught of the Lord” and discover the peace that results. (B22&B23) Christian Science again presents the gospel (or good news) of “on earth peace, good-will toward men.” Jesus said of the Comforter: “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.” (John 16: 8-11, The Message) To “believe in me” is to believe in the ideal man (the Christ) and his unity with God. Remember that sin is the belief that God and man can be separated! By seeing the impossibility of man being separated from God, the healing of physical disease will take place, but more importantly will attest to “the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world (the possibility of separation, and thus the possibility of discord of any kind). (S30) Christian Science reveals the truth of being! (S32) It is the promised Comforter, and is here now. Nothing else needs to be added. But … this Science must be practiced and demonstrated and it is our privilege and our opportunity to do just that!!! Practice bringing every thought in line with the goodness of God’s law. Practice with the little things and your faith and understanding will grow and gain strength. Then with each new opportunity — each new challenge — you will be more confident and better able to see God’s salvation here and now! God never leaves you alone!

[Warren’s “Cobbey P.S.” on John 14.5-17, Jesus talks with disciples & prophesies the Comforter:
In John 14:12 Jesus makes a prophesy. He makes a prophesy in impersonal terms…

“There are greater works, the ultimatum of the application of what Jesus had introduced to earth. So, when he’s talking about greater works being done, through what agency will these greater works come? We find the Comforter is introduced.
John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter.”

We should know enough about prophesy and have enough respect to realize that most of the prophets in the Bible, including Jesus, had a tremendous regard for prophesy. They knew that it had come from God, not from man. Similarly, we should know how to recognize the Comforter when the Comforter arrives… The word “comforter” is parakletos, sometimes called paraclete… translated “comforter” given by our King James Version. You will find, however, that The New English Bible does not use “comforter.” It uses “advocate.” You’ll also find that I John uses parakletos and the King James translator of that uses “advocate.”

We should know that the word “advocate” is a technical word legally. It specifically means “defense attorney.” That has a lot of implications to it. By contrast the name “Satan” in Hebrew is a technical term for “prosecuting attorney.” There you have the battle joined in thought.

The Comforter is to come and defend man. We can see all the ways that Jesus had introduced various defenses for man…
John 14:16, “that he may abide with you for ever.” Is there a provision for a third revelation? The Comforter is apparently the final one.

John 14:17, “the Spirit of Truth.” Notice how that counters Jesus’ definition of the “devil.” What did he say about the truth? It was the recipe for freedom (John 3:8). So, it’s got something to do with that. But there is also a communications problem. The world “cannot receive.” It’s not going to be a popular arrival. “It doesn’t see him or know him.”

But, we will know, “because it’s within.”

John 14:26 picks up the description. “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.” There’s another part of the list, identified with the Holy Ghost in Luke 3:22, the dove descending is the symbol of it. The words “dove” and “ghost” are feminine in the Greek, and the comfort aspect also introduces the feminine concept.

The role of the Comforter “will be sent by God in my name.” If one were to regard that literally, the Comforter’s name should at least have some recognizable aspect either relating to Jesus or to Christ. Another aspect of the Comforter is “he will teach you all things.”

The role of teaching what? Is anything left out? “All things.” And at the same time, “it will bring everything back to human memory that Jesus said.”
