Metaphysical Application Ideas for the Weekly Bible Lesson December 14-20, 2009
Subject: Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?
Prepared by Kathy Fitzer, C.S. of St. Louis, MO [bracketed italics by Warren Huff]

[Editor's Note: The following application ideas for this week and the Possible Sunday School Topics that follow are offered primarily to help CEDARS campers and staff (as well as friends) see and demonstrate the great value of daily study and application of the Christian Science Bible lessons year-round, not just at camp! You can sign up to have them emailed to you free — in English by Monday each week, or by each Wednesday you can get a FREE TRANSLATION in French from Pascal or in Spanish from Ana. Is the universe, including man, evolved by atomic force? No way!  The birth of Jesus proved that man's origin is God, Spirit.  As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let's be sure we are honoring our Savior and making room for Christ in our hearts and lives by following his example. [You can hear about making room for the Christ–the priority preparation needed–by clicking on today's “Daily Lift” by Christian Science lecturer, Maryl Walters, CSB.]  Christ Jesus showed us what it means to be the son of God. What better gift can we give ourselves and others than acting out our divine heritage?  [Like Jesus did in John 5:30 and] in all things, give God the glory! The word “glory” appears at least once in every section of this lesson, as well as in the Golden Text and Responsive Reading.  Glory is one of those words we use a lot, but do we really know what it means?  According to MyBibleLesson.com “glory appears in the Bible as a way to describe God's visible presence among the people.”  It is often associated with light.  The Hebrew word, kabod, translated as glory in the Old Testament, comes from the root, kabad, and connotes weight – that is: important, rich, and honorable. (Strong's H3519 and 3513)  The Greek word, doxa, is translated as both glory and honor, and indicates a sense of something that is “very apparent” and worthy of worship and praise. (Strong's #G1391)  In this lesson we see lots of examples of God's glory breaking through the darkness–dispelling the night. Give God credit for everything good! Acknowledge His glory, and rejoice in it!

Golden Text: This lesson gives plenty of reasons to sing “Alleluia”!  It shows how the glory (the weight) of divine Spirit dispels the myths and limits of matter. So, let's be glad and rejoice–literally “jump for joy” (Strong's G21)–and recognize God as the governing power of the universe, including man.

Responsive Reading: Look around. God's glory is apparent everywhere. Enjoy the imagery of the psalmist, and when you look around, find your own evidences of God's glory — his power, splendor, and rich illumination — whether it is a beautiful sunset or the uniqueness of each snowflake, or a billion other things we see in nature. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, “All nature teaches God's love for man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual.” (326:8) See the good of Spirit's creation — regardless of the false report sometimes apparent to the physical senses — and shout out the praise. Give God the glory due for His amazing goodness!

Section 1: Glimpse the Glory of God Revealed to Mary — Man is the Son of God
The Bible says that an angel told Mary, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee.”  “Holy Ghost” or “divine Spirit” Mrs. Eddy defines as “Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love” (S-2 and S&H 588: 7)  Divine Science overthrows the limited “laws” of corporeal creation. Because of Mary's intimate relationship with God, she responded to the active presence of God in her consciousness. She was open to the possibility that “with God nothing shall be impossible” and dared to accept the privilege of bearing God's child, even though she had never “been with” a man. (S-2 and B-4) Mary accepted the privilege of fulfilling the prophet Isaiah's promise that a virgin would have a child and call him Immanuel (Hebrew for “with us is God” – Strong's #H6005)  This child would reveal the glory of God in a form that everyone could understand.  This idea of Immanuel embodied the divine promise of protection to Jerusalem. (B-2&3 – Harper Collins Study Bible) The only way for Jerusalem (which we can think of, more broadly, as our dwelling place, or home – see S&H 589) to be permanently protected is for the “conceptions of mortal, erring thought” to “give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal.” (S-4) Jesus turned everything upside down. He overthrew every law of matter! He fully embodied the glory of God, and illustrated what it means to be the “son of God.” What material conceptions might we need to give up — in order to see God's perfect model? Do we admit that it is possible for the Holy Spirit (God's presence) to “hover” over us and reveal His perfect nature?  Do we have a project looming, or some disease that appears to be unyielding, or a relationship issue that appears incapable of resolution? [When projects and problems loom, it's like we need to flip the binoculars of our souls (spiritual sense) away from looking at the negative, Goliath-like suggestions-and accentuate the positive like David did by focusing on and magnifying how big God is! Then we too will have confidence to run “undisturbed” to meet any looming problem as if it's just another opportunity to prove God's allness. For every glance at error–through the minimizing end of the binoculars–let us take ten magnifying perusals of Truth to see it as large and close as it really is. Let your soul “magnify the Lord” like Mary's did to have intimacy–“nearness, not distance” with how big God is and how close his Christ is. (S&H 209:15) Real “Objects in this (divine) mirror ARE actually closer than they appear!” (S&H 264:14, 269:15, 584:4)  Try playing the “Honey, just shrink the problem” game in the coming PSST.]  As weentertain [such] angels and rejoice in the glory of God being revealed to us, we will be ready to receive [and run with] the liberating Christ!

Section 2: Be Wakeful Enough to Recognize God's Glory! Honor the Christ!
Imagine how devastated Mary and Joseph may have felt when they discovered the inn was full. But, God had a special place for them — a quiet place, protected from the busyness of worldly thought and blindness of tradition — where the Christ child could be brought forth.  The appearing of Christ Jesus is evidence of God's great love for His children. Jesus was the incarnation (the embodied representation) of Truth — of the perfect man, inseparable from Christ. (S-6 & S-7)  The Hebrew Bible is full of promises that God would send a king (a son) to deliver His people from all oppression. (B-5 & B-6)  The wakeful shepherds and the wise men saw the sign announcing the birth of the promised Savior and were led (each in their own time) to bring honor and praise to the human expression of God's glory. (B-7 & B-8)  Webster defines wakeful as “alert and vigilant.” Are we grateful for the place God has prepared for us? Are we consistently wakeful enough to recognize the Christ idea — and follow the light of Truth, guiding us and liberating us from whatever would oppress? (S-5)  Mrs. Eddy speaks of “the Bethlehem babe” making plain “to benighted understanding” the way of salvation.  This Christ, the light of Truth, is continually coming to our unenlightened (benighted) thought to save us from the error that would engulf us — and lead us to harmony. Do we fully acknowledge it? The wise men brought gifts to Jesus (gold — given to kings, frankincense — used in worship by priests, and myrrh–used as a burial spice.) (B-8) What gift can we bring? For one, the gift of response — desiring above all else to understand and demonstrate the spiritual origin of man — divine Science — as demonstrated by Jesus. (S-10) We have to stop believing the material theories that are only a “misapprehension of existence,” and bear witness to the testimony of spiritual sense (even when it contradicts material “law” or physical conditions.)  Then, the new-old idea of God's creation will again appear. (S-8 & S-9) What are we waiting for? Be vigilant – wakeful! God's glory (His richness, honor, brightness and power) can be seen here and now. Let the Light of Christ reveal the divine purity and innocence inherent in all of God's creation.  Acknowledge the presence of Christ and it will appear — in you and all — even in the midst of the darkest night. [See the PSST to come for more light on CedarS 2010 theme of demonstrating the stress-free sustainability of “the spiritual sense of being . . . the sons and daughters of God.” (S-8 & S-10)]

Section 3: The Glory of God Seen in Spiritual Law Overturning Material “Law”!
Crisis in the middle of the night? Not to worry! Jesus taught us to walk OVER the waves. (Check out Unity of Good 11: 3-19) The Bible is full of reports of Jesus lifting lives out of the darkness of disease — healing all those that came to him. (B-11) He overcame every sort of material “law” — including the laws of physics! (S-12)  Jesus physically walked over the waves to quiet his disciples fears, stilled the storm, and overcame the limits of time and space. (B-12)  [Jesus took the whole boatload of disciples instantly across the Sea of Galilee without using a drop of fuel. How's that for sustainability!] How did this happen? Jesus wasn't weighed down by the false beliefs associated with mortal origins. (S-11)  And, the disciples “received him into the ship.”  The Christ, Truth, is continually coming to us to still our storms. Are we “receiving” him into our consciousness? Because of the circumstances of his birth, Jesus' spiritual parentage was clearer for him than it is for us.  But, everything Jesus did, he assured us WE could do: “These signs shall follow them that believe. . .” (S-15) This demonstration is possible in proportion as we interpret the universe and man from the basis of its divine Principle, God — and not try to “explain” things on the basis of physical sense. Physical “laws” are entirely unreliable and would subject us to continual change and destruction. (S-13) We're not working to “set-aside” material laws. (S-14)  We demonstrate their illusive nature (and so silence their claims) by entertaining the glory of the original ORDER of God's law — eternally governing the universe — including man! (S-16)  Constant vigilance is required to not be taken in by false evidence appearing real (F.E.A.R.) “Spirit is the life, substance and continuity of all things.” (S-13) All means ALL — no exceptions — no night!

Section 4: Give God the Glory!  A Spiritual Perspective Reveals Present Good!
It was evening. Night was approaching. Things looked desperate. Where was the food going to come from to feed five thousand men, PLUS the women and children? There was no material solution. The bread and fish available just weren't enough. Or, so it looked to the unenlightened thought.  Today we might think: only a few more hours (or minutes) to solve this problem or get this project done; there's no hope for this physical condition; there's not enough money to pay the bills; I don't have enough to take care of my family. Jesus was looking at the same physical evidence as the disciples, but his reaction was totally different. (B-15) Again, Jesus wasn't impressed by the physical evidence. He wasn't working from the limited standpoint of matter. He wasn't working to fix a material problem. He was glorifying God, demonstrating the faithfulness of His promise, as given in Isaiah. Jesus knew that God rules HIS people, and cares for them as a shepherd cares for his sheep. (B-14 & S-17)  Jesus accepted whatever little he appeared to have, but didn't see it as limited. He glorified God (thanked Him for the blessings) and recognized God's power to reveal His infinitude.  As the disciples distributed the infinite supply, they saw for themselves the multiplying effect of Spirit.  They ended up with MORE than what they started with.  [How's that for sustainability!] Spirit is the ONLY origin of good — and is totally unlimited.  Matter, on the other hand, is by its very nature, limited. So, if the seeds of an investment fund, or of knowledge, or spiritual understanding seem insufficient to bear adequate fruit, change your perspective! The better we get at taking every problem to God to solve, the more we'll see that “Mind's control over the universe, including man . . . is demonstrable Science.” We can, as Jesus did, welcome every opportunity to watch God reveal his ever-present power and multiply His goodness to bless ALL. There's always enough to share, without fear that we will be deprived as a result. God, Spirit, is the source! Draw freely from divine Mind's unlimited well of resources — and rejoice in the abundance for all!

Section 5: Eyes are Opened to SEE the Glory of God — in the face of Jesus Christ
Blindness is the ultimate “night.” But God's glory knows no night.  The promises and commands of Isaiah (which we read of in sections 1-5) remain true today. As we accept the coming of the Christ, we can assure ourselves and others (in times of trouble) “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.” (B-16 NLT)  Jesus fulfilled prophesy by restoring sight to the man born blind. That had never been done before, though it has been done since.  Jesus answered the disciples' question of who had caused the man to be blind by sinning — (a) the man, or (b) the parents — with (c) none of the above — [DNA-Does Not Apply]. He saw clearly that blindness (or any imperfection) isn't anyone's fault. It's literally a misperception of reality that must be corrected.  Identifying himself as the light of the world, Jesus “work[ed] the works of God” by dispelling the darkness of misunderstanding, and removing the imposition. (B-19)  [By spitting on the dust Cobbey Crisler suggested that] Jesus showed his disdain for the commonly-held belief that man was “evolved by atomic force,” and subject to the “laws” of mortal heredity.  Understanding spiritual origin is key to washing away [all dust-origin] misconceptions that would blind us to present perfection.  Looking at this healing in context, we see that it is surrounded by varying views concerning whether or not Jesus was the Messiah — and by various levels of commitment to those beliefs.  Physical blindness was eliminated for one man, but this healing blessed those witnessing the healing — including us — as eyes were/are opened to behold the presence of Christ.   Sight has nothing to do with matter. Christian Science — which is literally the Science (or law of God) that Jesus taught and practiced — keeps us safe (S-23), reveals our perfection (S-24), and frees us from the beliefs of heredity, or mind in matter. (S-25)  Christ is here, opening our eyes to see the glory of God. Stop judging by what the physical senses tell you. Open your eyes and see God's amazing gifts of health, freedom, abundance, ability, joy — everything good! Look ‘til you see!

Section 6: We are governed by the power — the glory — of God! Praise the Lord!!!
There's nothing to add for this section. It is totally straightforward. Matter doesn't govern you.  You are not limited — in any way, by any thing! ALL power belongs to God and we are subject to those powers.  Now, that's reason for rejoicing! And, as we rejoice, the day dawns, the glory of God is revealed and darkness is no longer! [No exceptions!]

[Camp Director's Note: This sharing is the latest in an ongoing, 9-year series of CedarS Bible Lesson “mets” (metaphysical application ideas) contributed weekly by a rotation of CedarS Resident Practitioners and occasionally by other metaphysicians. (To keep the flow of the practitioner's ideas intact and to allow for more selective printing the “Possible Sunday School Topics” come in a subsequent email.) This weekly offering is intended to encourage further study and application of ideas in the lesson and to invigorate Sunday School participation by students and by the budding teachers on our staff. Originally sent JUST to my Sunday School students and to campers, staff and CedarS families who wanted to continue at home and in their home Sunday Schools the same type of focused Lesson study, application and inspiration they had felt at camp, CedarS lesson “mets” are in no way meant to be definitive or conclusive or in any way a substitute for daily study of the lesson. The thoughts presented are the inspiration of the moment and are offered to give a bit more dimension and background as well as new angles on the daily applicability of some of the ideas and passages being studied. The weekly Bible Lessons are copyrighted by the Christian Science Publishing Society and are printed in the Christian Science Quarterly as available at Christian Science Reading Rooms or online at eBibleLesson.com or myBibleLesson.com. The citations referenced (i.e. B-1 and S-28) from this week's Bible Lesson in the “met” (metaphysical application ideas) are taken from the Bible (B-1 thru B-24) and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (S-1 thru S-30). The Bible and Science and Health are the ordained pastor of the Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Bible Lesson is the sermon read in Christian Science church services throughout the world. The Lesson-Sermon speaks individually through the Christ to everyone, providing unique insights and tailor-made applications for each one. We are glad you requested this metaphysical sharing and hope that you find some of the ideas helpful in your daily spiritual journey, in your deeper digging in the books and in closer bonding with your Comforter and Pastor.]
Enjoy!

Possible Sunday School Topics
by Merrill Boudreaux [bracketed italics by Warren] for the 12-20-09
Christian Science Bible Lesson “Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?”

P.S.S.T. – Golden Text and Responsive Reading–Ask students to list reasons to praise God from whom all blessings flow. Hallelujah indeed!

P.S.S.T. – Sections 1 and 2 – This is an opportunity to have students read aloud the Bible account of the birth of Jesus: B-4, B-7 and B-8
Who were some of the key players in Jesus' life, beginning with the announcement of his pending birth through his ascension? [Angels spoke to each player! Are you giving loving attention to “the angels that you need*”-making “radiant room*” for your “spiritual guides*” that ever announce the “spiritual sense of (your) being*” & of those around you? (*Hymn 298:2, *S-1 (299:15) & * S&H 548:16,]

P.S.S.T. – Sections 3 and 4 – The glory of the Lord was risen on Jesus.  Why was this so?  What evidence is there in these sections that Jesus was anointed of God?  (B-11, B-12 and B-15)  Do these acts reveal laws of God set aside, or laws of God utilized?  What laws of God can you identify?  Were the results of the application of these laws miraculous or supernatural? S-14, S-15, S-16

P.S.S.T. – Section 5 – Were Jesus' demonstrations unique to him only?  What is the “great light” seen by the people that walked in darkness?  See S&H 468:8 for the scientific statement of being that frees us from the belief of heredity, of mind in matter, or animal magnetism. [How can we better share the one Lawmaker's great light with our lawmakers and “give to the world convincing proof of the validity of this scientific statement of being. Having perceived, in advance of others, this scientific fact, we owe to ourselves and to the world a struggle for its demonstration.” (Ret. 93:24)  Think about that as we close Sunday School and church this week with the scientific statement of being that Albert Einstein called the “most profound statement ever uttered by mankind.” (Jack Geis, Physics, Metaphysics and God, p. 220)]

P.S.S.T. – Section 6 – Rejoicing time! “…we are subject to the divine ‘Powers that be.'” (S-30) Ask students to do some reflective writing about their reasons to rejoice, at this time of the year especially. Perhaps they could seal their writing in an envelope to open on Christmas Day as a gift to themselves.

[Sorry–an uncle's passing delayed my posting this PSST with the theme and game promised in the “Met”:
CedarS 2010 “Spiritual Sense Sustainability” Theme: We chose this theme because it will be helpful to our Movement and planet for our future leaders and workers to glimpse and prove that sustainability is “a present possibility.”(S&H 574:2) This week's Bible Lesson features sustainability break-throughs that Jesus demonstrated through his highly-developed spiritual sense in a low-tech, undeveloped country.  Knowing he was the beloved “son of the Highest” (B-4, S-9),Jesus Walked On Water (W.O.W. B-12, John 6:19)andsoovercame both the law of gravity and a condition of “helpless weightlessness-which would occur with the negation of gravity.” (as Bible Scholar B. Cobbey Crisler said in “A Visit with the Beloved Disciple: Gospel of John” now available as a CD along with 24 other B.C. Crisler CDs from Daycroft School Foundation) With that metaphysical mindset, Jesus gave another lesson in physics and transportation by taking a whole boatload of disciples “in the blink of an immortal eye” across the Sea of Galilee without using a drop of fuel. (B-12, John 6:21) Now that's sustainability! “Space and time, as obstacles can be overcome. Immediately the ship, the disciples, everybody is beached. They're right there at the destination.” (ibid.) And for our daily sustenance how amazing it would be to end up with more than we started with like Jesus & the disciples did! (B-15, Matt. 14:14-21) In future weeks watch for more sustainability lessons from Jesus as well as from Elijah, Moses & Mary Baker Eddy who were all among “those leaning on the sustaining infinite” & daily receiving “big blessings.” (S&H vii: 1)

The “Honey, just shrink the problem” Game-A Possible Sunday School Teaching option:(for future use?)

Objective: To give Sunday School students an appreciation of possible present-day applications of Bible examples of the healing power found in obeying the directive in the Church Manual called Alertness to Duty. . . . It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his leader and to mankind.” (p. 42:4)  In future game episodes, other Bible Lessons and Commandments can be mined for ways to apply the later part of the Bylaw–to do “his duty to God, to his leader and to mankind.” (ibid.)

Intro: The goal of this game/exercise–a takeoff from the movie “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”–is to bear witness to the elimination of each problem thanks to the allness of divine Love. With that  “the healing work is accomplished in one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine.” (S&H 365:15)  Remind your class that in running to slay a 9'-8″-tall Goliath, David didn't focus on how big Goliath was, but on how all-mighty God was. (I Sam. 17)  In stilling a great storm, Jesus wasn't impressed by its intensity and size, but by God's great peace. (Mark 4:39-41)
Props needed: 3 boxes or 3 bags that nest inside one another–at least loosely.  (Ideally in advance, write on the bottoms of the bags or boxes the 1-liners below. Tape a pin or a pinhead on the bottom of the middle package.)
2 pens-1 bold, 1 fine.   1 magnifying glass to help make fine print larger and easier to read.

Tell the class you'll show them how to shrink and heal all problems, no matter how they come packaged.
1.    On the outside (biggest) box or bag write –or have students write–in large letters: AGGRESSIVE?  In your face? Earthquake? Wind? Fire? NO Problem! NO Fear! Only Empty Threats! NO Contagion! NO Disease! NO Incurability! NO Hostility! plus other aggressive claims students wish to see put down.
2.    Like the apostles “that have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6)–turn the box or bag (problem) upside down. If you have a magnifying glass, use it to make clearer this small print that you wrote in advance on the bottom: “a still, small voice” (from Elijah's cave revelation in I Kings 19:11-13) Another passage to possibly discuss is: “to pray aright we must enter the closet and shut the door.” S&H 15:14).
3.    Say to the class (or yourself) something like: “To be receptive to the Christ–like Mary was–our souls (spiritual sense) also must “magnify the Lord” (B-4).  And, like another favorite Mary, we must deny every exception to God's allness in order to prove it. (Examples of NO EXCEPTIONS! NO PROBLEM!–abound in every lesson. Some this week that deny aggressive evidence are: “no material law” S-15; “no disorder” S-16; “the spiritual senses of  man . . . cannot be lost” S-27;” nothing apart from Him is present or has power” S-29)
4.   Next, pull the 2nd box or bag out of the 1st one and discard the 1st one to the ground or trash (temporarily).
5.   On the middle-sized box or bag write –or have students write–in large letters: A PHYSICAL problem or cause? Not!  Man NOT Material-But Spiritual! (S.S.B., S&H 468) All Flaws Falsely Mental–NOT Physical!  Blemishes, Aches & Ills NOT Bodily! plus others physical claims students wish to put down.
6.   Turn the box or bag (problem) upside down. If you have a magnifying glass, use it to read this small print that you wrote on the bottom in advance: ALWAYS MENTAL! Possibly: “A scientific mental method is more sanitary than the use of drugs, and such a mental method produces permanent health.” (S&H 79:7) Discover– taped on the bottom–a pin to metaphorically burst the bloated bubble of physical appearance with what even physical scientists tell us about our bodies: the atoms for the body would fit on the head of a pin if the space between the atomic particles  was removed. And electrons, protons, neutrons are made up of 99.99. . .% space. So, ask yourself: Just how big on the pinhead is that injured (or worshipped) body part that demands my attention? It and you are obviously not “solidly” material, but solidly spiritual!  NO EXCEPTIONS!)
7.   Next, pull the 3rd box or bag out of the 2nd one and discard the 2nd one to the ground or trash.
8.   On the smallest box or bag write–or have students write–in large letters: A REAL problem? Not! Every apparent human problem NOT divinely actual! To stop seeing what you believe, STOP believing what you see!  To stop hearing what you believe, STOP believing what you hear! (About the flu ,…) plus others illusive claims students wish to see put down.
9.   Turn the last box or bag (problem) upside down. If you have a magnifying glass, use it to read this small print that you wrote on the bottom in advance: SUGGESTION!Poof! The problem is gone!” (Chris Irby Williams) Pitch last problem package! Never a reality,  Always just an illusion appearing real! (S-8,  S-14)
